      I've been saying this for years, and I will say it till I die: Jeff Lynne is probably the greatest composer of the past 50 years. "Living Thing" changed my life within the first 10 seconds I heard it. The moment I heard it, I knew my life would never be the same. And I was right. If I met Jeff Lynne, I would bow low before him and say, "Thank you. Thank you. Thank you."

      I was going to say the same thing but you beat me to it. I don't know that backward masking is even decipherable in this digital age, no vinyl album to manually turn backwards. This is one of my favorites from ELO.

      The album Secret Messages has a lot of baxk masking.

    • @scottwensing7184
      @scottwensing7184 5 років тому +3

      because if you could understand the message, you were turning the record backwards and the needle would fall off the record as this was the first song. Jeff Lynne loved to do stuff like that.

      This was due to the bizarre response of some American fundamentalist Christians who said that “Eldorado,’” the previous album, had backwards satanic messages embedded in the music.

    At the beginning the chaos seemed to show on Kel's face pretty well. When they started resolving the cacophany that also showed. Moving from chaos to resolution is a musical device that has to be carefully done and here i think ELO nailed it.

    This would be my favorite ELO song. It gets me thinking about LIFE,Humanity,People you have met,Things you have done,Places you have seen. The very best part of the song starts at 4:43 to 5:50 and than again at 6:36 to 7:27. those are my absolute favorite parts of the song!! Its like those 2 bridge pieces were good short but if you played them to long it would not be the same. So it was Brilliantly done! Your wife Kel's reactions are Pricless!! Way to go!

    This album, along with the previous "Eldorado", was part of the transition between their rougher, more experimental earlier sound (with lone violin and cello playing band members more at the fore and a leaner sound) and their evolution into a lush, power pop band (but still with shades of prog) augmented by scores of studio musicians. For me, nothing matches the song suite on side one of their third album, "On the Third Day", which precedes "Eldorado."

    Yes, it was on one of the sports programs. Back in the 70's, the theme of the guitar riff was the main theme of CBS Sports Spectacular, and if I remember correctly, it played during a brief clip of one boxer (I think it was Roberto Duran) hitting a guy against the ropes with hook after hook.

    Their second album was "ELO 2" (that's how I was first introduced to their music). It was the album that featured one of my favorites (ELO's version of "Roll Over Beethoven") plus it marked the departure of Roy Wood (the band's former leader). Their first album did however produce "10538 Overture" which is another GREAT ELO song. As previously mentioned, "Fire On High" was the opening track of their 5'th album "Face the Music".

    • @davidmacgregor5193
      @davidmacgregor5193 Рік тому

      "10538 Overture" was originally going to be the 'B' side of The Move's "When Alice Comes Back To The Farm". Roy Wood added heavy cello riffs to "10538" after the other band members had gone home for the night, When Jeff Lynne heard what Roy had done to his song, he loved it and declared that is ELO, Jeff added "Overture" to the title and ELO's first recording was made. Rick Price wasn't interested in ELO so he left the band for a solo career, Roy erased Rick Price's bass track and rerecorded it himself. The eventual 'B' side of When Alice..... was another Jeff Lynne song called "What".

    Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond.
    Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop.
    The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal".

    I remember when I first got that album and I had to adjust my turntable belt to play it backwards. NOW THAT IS A DELIBERATE BACKWARD MESSAGE AND NO QUESTION ABOUT IT! LOL! Actually, the acoustic parts of the song are going forward and reversed continuously.

    Jeff has a way of making music that each tune has a brilliant start and an even brilliant ending to a tune, what goes on in middle tune doesn't matter. as long as the listener enjoys the start and finish, the tune becomes enormous. by the way, i'm in the uk.

    Hey there Kel & Rich. It is so good to see you both. Just wanted to point something out here for you and that is: That the particular version of this song that you've chosen to react to? It has been massaged, by who knows what? We only know that the Video has been changed as well as the Audio, which has had the Volume "Corrected" too. This is a Huge No-No.
    That's how it begins, with getting people like you to accept this as "Okay" or "Normal." It is NOT Okay nor Normal. So, do we know who applied all of this "Correcting?" Were they a Certified Audiologist? Were they provided by the Band, with their thumbs-up? I'm sorry you two, but this is quickly becoming an issue, because our Music and it's history is being corrupted and erased, all while right under our noses. Example: "Just a few days ago I wanted to react to someone that was going to be reacting to a song by Led Zeppelin, which is titled "A Whole Lotta Love," from their 2nd album. Well the version that they were listening to Said that this was a "Remastered Version" from 2008. So, I'm listening to this song and ALL of the Stereo, Left to Right & Back again, was completely removed! I got so angry... So, who was the person that was Narcissistic enough to think that they knew what was best, even more so than the producers. The really scary part of this, is that if no one calls them out on this shit, it won't be long before this "Remastered" bull shit becomes the new normal. Gee, it must be better because it was remastered in 2008, right? WRONG! These mental midgets need to keep their hands OFF of our Music! I actually came upon a song a few days ago where someone had applied this "Auto-Tune" bull shit... and this was a song by Pink Floyd, of all Bands. No, this is scary, you two. Won't you please help, as you can, to NOT Promote the ways of these Arrogant Assholes?!
    Please... Preserve our Music and its History. Keep it Original & Keep it Accurate.
    Remain Well & reasonably Happy too. Keep Smiling always... Cheers...

    9:09 😆 lol. The intro was a deliberate, not-so-veiled jab at ultra Christian fanatics who went about accusing rock bands of deliberately putting subliminally demonic messages into their recordings, which is entirely untrue. So Jeff made the recording to reflect that, not only by the song, but by the album cover and some of the other song titles such as Evil Woman, Nightrider & Strange Magic. The album cover is brilliant, showing an electric chair with a puff of smoke, depicting someone being sent off to eternal torment. The title is brilliant too.
    Some fun here if you already hadn't researched it yourselves. Fire On High intro played in reverse

    It's weird how many "Fifth Beatles" there were. Pete Best - first drummer, Billy Preston - did many of the keyboards, Jeff Lynn - some production, and of course George Martin to count a few. But I digress. Jeff Lynn is a superstar in his own right. Check out his War of the Worlds masterpiece!

    I remember hearing this song at Phillies games at the Vet in the 1990s, loving the guitar riff, but not knowing its title. I told my mom about it and she researched and told me, "I think it's 'Fire On High'". I looked it up on the Web to see what album it's on, and actually found a three-pack of ELO that includes the CDs *Discovery*, *Face The Music*, and *A New World Record*.

    The beginning sounds like a Horror movie?? It gets worse. Dont play it backwards, you'll feel similar to the first time you saw The Exorcist. I have this album on vinyl and tried playing it backwards about 40 years ago and I couldn't sleep for a few days, I was that freaked out

    This song used to play on a ride in funtown usa in Maine. You would go inside this dome. It would be dark inside. Then you would climb into these spinning wheels and get ready for the ride to start up. Then this song would start to play and the ride would start to whisk you around. The breeze in your face, music playing and then they projected things on the dome. It was so relaxing.
