I got a 995 and a few 87's. Way better than any modern rifles.

I just completed two projects this week using TruOil. One was a Boyd’s replacement stock for my Remington 512 and the other was my M1 Garand. Both turned out beautifully. The Garand stock was filthy being impregnated with cosmoline. After stripping it with acetone and sanding, I applied the TruOil. Three coats gave it a very high sheen, way too shiny for a Garand, so I buffed it with 0000 steel wool and ended up with a nice semi gloss finish. The Boyd’s stock received around a dozen coats of TruOil. I buffed it with steel wool and wet sanded it with 400 - 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper until I got the desired smoothness, then
finished with three light coats of TruOil for a mirror finish. This process was time consuming but yielded beautiful results. Great product!!!!

My grandfather gave me his Savage/Stevens 87a some years ago. Def an accurate rifle. I love the tiny pinpoint sights. I like running shorts, subs & CCI Quiets in bolt action. Lotta fun.
It was in pieces when I first received it. Talk about tuff... man that thing was a problem project for sure! That "horseshoe" shaped spring that sits around the end of the mag tube (the one that holds cartridges in place for the elevator to push up), was all bent out of shape. Both it & the elevator springs were just hanging around lose in the receiver, bent up & jammed in there 😲 Took me forever to figure out what was going on. That aggravating horseshoe spring was so hard to make work. It has to be set "just right" for those cartridges to feed. So darn frustrating... Was worth the trouble though, great rifle.
I like that 995 too. Looks a lot like the Marlin 795. My 795 is my go to squirrel rifle. I can carry it in the woods all day. Lightweight & slim. Love it. One of the best budget 22s IMO.
Awesome old rifles. Great video, thanks for sharing 👍

Beautiful results. I like the uniqueness of the rifle plus the tube magazine is a good feature.

I have a Stevens Springfield made 87a, same exact model as yours. Mine still had deep fresh blueing, but the gloss is ruined from sunlight. I think I'll leave mine alone for now. These rifles have a Microgroove barrel, so they are very accurate.

The Marlin looks very similar to my 795. Very nice little rifle.

I never saw it applied with a paper towel. Never seen the excess wiped off with paper towel either. It seems to do a nice job. I've been using Tru-Oil for years and swear by it. I've always applied it with my fingers and let it dry naturally. Leave as is if you want a glossy appearance. I also knock it down with 0000 steel wool after several coats and then buff with a soft cloth for a satin appearance. Either way it's nice stuff. I'll have to try the paper towel and save my fingers from being tacky even after cleaning. 👍

I was afraid you were gonna ruin that sweet 87 but it turned out great. I normally clean my stocks and then rub boiled linseed oil into them if they look dried out. Seems to work pretty well. Haven't tried the tru oil yet.

If you can make out a letter with the 12 stamped it’ll give you date it was made A for 1949 and every letter up is the next yr. Mine has a B which puts it being made at 1950.

Looks good, do you know what kind of wood the stock is made of?

Might have to buy me some of that oil. I have the Stevens 87a and a savage model 90, the action is almost identical on both. What did you use for the clear coat on 995’s stock?
