Lie is a masterpiece both in the song itself and the performance. There are many lies presented to the listener and viewer. The music starts with strings in a low thick base, that is calming but menacing. However, they are in a minor cord, this will be a lie as the song will jump to a major cord. Cord changes like this do not often happen in music, as such the listener is expecting a minor song, but was lied to when the cords change to major. The beat is also a lie. BTS is pop music, generally present in 4/4 time. This is what a listener anticipates, but Lie is a 6/8. This is a hasty rhythm that is used to convey conflict, distress in orchestral compositions. The tempo and strings (which remain throughout the song) start the listener down a path of being on edge. What is to come? The strings may represent the inner struggle, the disarray within. Yet the main melody is pop, and is on top of the strings. The main instrumentals are light hearted, as pop tends to be, however, the dark strings remain. The pop is the lie, the orchestral is the truth. Then, of course, are the vocals. He starts with a darker timber, with lyrics that are describing inner thoughts, minor key. The jump to the major key is almost a scream, the music swells as well. Here the tenor is lighter, high pitched. One questions, which is the truth of the song - major or minor - which is the lie? In the lyrics when he questions if he is still the same as before, that the lies are trying to swallow him. The instrumental is barely presented, this emphasizes the lyrics at this point. The tempo is quick, like a heartbeat. Choreography is also a lie in a manner of speaking. This is not wholly a contemporary dance (which is expected) but a combo of locking and popping with the contemporary element of storytelling. Again confusion, is presented. He is already in character as he takes his first step on stage, he is caught in a lie of who he is when he is the red light. Dancers box him in from the beginning, he does not come freely. More dancers trap him as the dance continues, until the lie swallows him. At times it can even look like invisible strings are pulling at him from above, forcing him to move in one direction or another. In the red light, the lie, his movements are more robotic or snake like (the lie). He is even blindfolded by the lie; he cannot find his true self anymore. In the white light, we see his inner struggles to get free, his movements are smoother. At the end the viewer/listener may expect that a resolution will be presented, a fade. However, the abrupt, unexpected ending, states he is still trapped, in the red, in the lie. The song ending says this is not over, the listener is not given that he has resolved the issues. He is still trapped in his self-doubt.
What a unique way to describe this song that I consider unique too. The way in which you have been qualifying and classifying the lie and the truth, both in the lyrics and in the music, in the interpretation and the dance, to reach a forceful conclusion about the closing of the song. This was definitely a perfect description for Lie. Congratulations and thank you very much!
"raising your emotional intelligence" is a brilliant way to express BTS's work indeed👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💜💜💜 Thank you fo your reactions, always a pleasure to watch💜💜💜
" Lie " is legendary. Jimin put everything into the song, his voice so pure and his dancing just perfect. Luv the intro and the melodramatic. 😢 💜 Thank you Bryan for this reaction. ❤
The music is simply brilliant. The minor key until switching to major on the lie, the dark tension in the music, the almost circular feel to the strings that provides no escape... brilliant. And then add those lyrics and Jimin? My god. I highly recommend the short film "special" because the dancing he does is him at his finest. It shows more of the choreo than the short film and it's more intense than the live because he didn't have to worry about singing.
Lie was written by Jimin about his past self. He blamed himself for his shortcomings & felt he wasn’t good enough. While writing he was deep in the lies from his past, blaming himself regardless of the truth. He pondered on his flaws and mistakes even if others didn’t. Jimin’s solos are unique & memorable. Lie is a masterpiece I feel. Classical musicians reacting to this song didn’t expect an orchestra and Spanish-guitar in the opening. When he sings ‘caught in a lie’ , the impact from minor to major creates anxiety and is almost a ‘lie in itself’. Jimin’s performances are always captivating. Docskim (Wild Flower w RM) produced this. THANK YOU 💜 for reacting to one of my favorite Jimin songs/ performances.
Thank you for reacting to this . Lie is a masterpiece! Jimin's beautiful vocals, the powerful 6/8 Bass beats, with the haunting Italian Opera( Libre Diablo) backing that is layered over the instrumentation is just so artistic. Jimin's dance is just exquisite! This is a piece of work that should not be missed and taken at face value, it is deep and thoughtful like all his other work.
Brian, thank you for reacting to this! Lie is one of my favorite songs among those performed by Jimin, whom I love dearly. In my opinion, Lie has it all: lyrics, music, chorus and acting, and Jimin is the catalyst that makes the magic happen.
❣️ Jimin wrote the lyrics not only by himself, but was the only one to send his very first draft to the producers, and it was approved, so no need for a rewrite! The lie is the lie he keeps telling himself. Always in the past aiming for perfection and by doing so always questioning and second guessing himself! Although deep inside he knows better! The other lie is telling himself, as well as everyone else that everything is alright when it's not!! Jimin has grown and changed, along with the other members since then. All learning to love themselves for who & what they are flaws and all! Jimin is now able to, as his song "Promise" says, shine the light on himself, as well, speaking up more when things bother him and allowing himself to laugh off whenever he makes any kind of mistake, knowing now he can always perfect or improve on what ever needs to be corrected next time!!
This is one of those songs that I'm not surprised a metal fan would like. It's got an edge and strong story. I love watching people react to the abrupt key change of the chorus... Especially musicians. It's fun to see if they get it. You jumped the first time, it was great. You took it to a place where it would be a lot like Fake Love... My interpretation is different. The abrupt, jarring shift to a major key on the chorus is telling us the story. The song is suddenly bright and cheerful sounding just as he says he's been caught in a lie. The major key - representing happiness - is the lie. He's been pretending to be happy when he's not, and he's trapped in the lie. I think this song and On are the precursors to Set Me Free pt 2. A Jimin progression 😅
Yes! That is exactly why this song got my attention! That key change...it takes your breathe away. It was like a cry of pain to me...without even knowing the English lyrics, I could FEEL his voice in my soul, and I have been hooked ever since. 'sighs' 💜💜💜💜💜
I like this song very much. It belongs to the wings series, if I'm not mistaken. There are 7 short videos with each member. And each video has an original song. 1. Begin - Jungkook. 2. Jimin - lie. 3.V - Stigma.4 Suga - first love.5 RM - reflection.6 Jhope - Mama.7Jin - awake.I love all these songs 😊Thanks for your reaction ♥️
Thank you, Bryan. I can't remember when I witnessed someone hearing this song for the first time. Thank you for reminding me. There's been much discussion how the song goes from a minor key to a major one when he hits "lie" and how different it makes it sound. Perhaps the positive sounding note for lie is also a part of the lie? One can really dig deep here. There are times when this is on repeat for me! And the choreography is...well, you know. I really do think this my favorite Jimin song. Thanks again.
in most of the performances he didn't actually sing "caught in a LIEEEEEEEE" part, he needs to breathe sometimes too haha but damn, DO I AGREE with the "zoom out during high note" part, it is SO frustrating! well, not here since he is not belting that part and choreo is the focus but during other performances where he has AMAZING high notes like "2, 3", "Mikrokosmos", "Boy in Luv" and many others, bighit just LOVES showing wide shots, audience, other members - ANYTHING but Jimin actually singing his soul out :\
FYI - due to dance movement, live vocal might need to be because cut because of noise the movement makes into the microphone (spinning causes wind noise). It can also be that the person requires an intake of breath for the next movement, which is opposite of singing when one blows out. You might also notices the when singers are hitting a note on their upper register, they will bend over to compress the air out, which they can't do when dancing.

Jimin spoke about writing this. It wasn't about a relationship per se but about him not being his authentic self and losing his way as they became more popular. Trying to be what everyone wanted. It is one of my favorite solos, masterpiece, and so heartbreaking bc of how he saw himself ehh...
