So I am dyeing with natural materials for a while now and spinach makes a gray/beige colour and to get this dark olive green you would have to use a totally different dyebath then you used for the other items. You would have to boil red onion Skin for an hour take out the Skin and add 10% alum and 4% iron (of favric weight) to get this olive green.

Did you know you can use spinach and Kool Aid to #dye clothing? This week, #Upcycling Expert Annie shows us her "recipe" for green dye. This is the perfect project for using items from #Goodwill! *****

I find it hard to believe you get a vibrant green from spinach. Most people get very pale green, greenish shade (0:47 except lighter because it gets lighter when it dries.), which is not worth of wasting food on.
Also, Kool Aid "natural"? Hard to believe that, either.

Wow!! I am impressed from your video!! I love your color sense!! I wonder (green) dye packet! What’s this? Is it for clothes? And could you tell me the name??:)

Hi ju s, thanks for watching and sharing your comments. This video is about 5 years old, so some dye manufacturers may be different today. Take a look at :58 into the video, for fabric dyes, and even Kool-aid mix! OH YEAH! (Ha, that's our Kool-aid reference!)

I'd love to use the spinach idea for a Halloween costume this year! I'm trying to dye a dress - how would that work? Would I stuff the spinach into the dress?

Hi Joanne, if you are trying to dye the costume, then you would not necessarily have to stuff the dress with the spinach, rather let the dress soak in the green-tinted dye. If you are thinking of actually using real spinach, as an accessory for your costume - then you can add the spinach wherever you feel it would best fit your look. Thanks for watching and sharing your question with us. Have a great Halloween!

    does the spinach come out

Hi Bob, if you wash lightly, the green staining remains for quite some time. It will fade over time, but remains primarily intact. Thanks for watching and sharing your question with us!

If you mean going green by raising their prices to become an antique store (from donated goods no less), then yes, goodwill goes green.

    What is alam

Hi Zakiya, thanks for watching and asking your question. The spelling is alum. It's used in cooking, baking, pickling and can easily be found.

Alum is a mordant that intensifies the colour and makes the pigments stay on the fibre. It's short for hydrated potassium Aluminium sulfate. There are others based on cupper, iron, tin and Chrome, but they effect the colour and the steam of their dyebath is not as healthy as the alum.

      Alum is Phitkari.
