And yes during summer don't forget to frequently apply sun screen while visiting indian streets.

I dont really know about the food in the states, but im a Canadian-born Punjabi and i can confirm that the Punjabi food in Canada is much better than the Punjabi food in America. This may be due to the high concentration of Punjabis in certain parts of Canada, such as; Surrey Vancouver, Brampton Ontario, and NE Calgary Alberta... all of which have been dubbed mini-india or mini-punjab. If you really want to try some foods that you feel you missed in India, you'll definitely be able to find them here. As far as I know, there is large population of Punjabis in Cali and New Jersey, which will most likely have the food.
