    +Michael Liu. You can't count this in quarter notes. It's either dotted quarters or eighths. This recording is about dotted quarter=78.

    • @EricChiClarinet
      @EricChiClarinet  8 років тому +1

      +Khefren Sackey It took me about an hour to put up the videos once the etudes were released. Probably about 10 years to learn how to play the clarinet/music.

    Are you doing a recording of the TMEA clarinet etudes for 2016-2017?

  • @teddynguyen1978

    I know that the sixteenth notes should be a light staccato, but are the eighth notes supposed to be held out longer so it doesn't sound like a sixteenth note or are they supposed to be staccato like? And for the marcato, should I be using more air (like in a short accented way) or like a short, hard staccato?

    • @EricChiClarinet
      @EricChiClarinet  9 років тому

      T N It depends. There are eighths with wedges over them meaning stacatissimo, some with dots for staccato, and some normal. The eighths with accents should be done primarily with the air, the wedges should be done with the tongue (hard staccato).

    hi I'm just asking if your going to post the new etude

  • @MrFutureSkills
    @MrFutureSkills 9 років тому

    I'd just like to ask why you didnt do any phrasing. There is no shaping. You're not evening playing the Etude you're playing at it.

    • @EricChiClarinet
      @EricChiClarinet  9 років тому

      MrFutureSkills I played what was on the page. It's important to remember that I played this etude in a way that would be competitive for the all-state auditions, not for public consumption. In addition, this etude is generally thought of to be an etude to teach light, fast articulation in a dance form. Listen to the slow etude if you want to hear more shape.

    I know I'm kind of late but how come you play the eighth notes staccato like in measure 4, 5, and 6 when there is no marking? Thanks. @Eric Chi

    • @EricChiClarinet
      @EricChiClarinet  8 років тому

      I think it's really a stylistic thing. It's essentially a dance and it would sound very funny if the notes were not short.

    • @toezilla123
      @toezilla123 8 років тому

      +Eric Chi Oh ok. Thank you for responding especially because I'm this late.

    What would you consider good warm ups to enhance the technical parts of this etude?

    • @EricChiClarinet
      @EricChiClarinet  8 років тому

      +Maggie Kleck You can never go wrong with long tones. A strong knowledge of scales and particularly dominant 7th chords would help with the middle section. A proper staccato (as in you stop the notes with your tongue) is also paramount.

  • @vainty

    for the different tonguing patterns how would I practice this.

    • @EricChiClarinet
      @EricChiClarinet  2 роки тому +1

      Most of the patterns slur the first two notes. Count in 6 until you know what the patterns are. Clipping slurs also helps.

    hey what combination of reeds and mouth piece do you recommend? (: and what type of ligature are you using??

    • @EricChiClarinet
      @EricChiClarinet  9 років тому

      Matthew Lara I play a B40 Lyre with Rico reserve 3.5 reeds. I usually recommend either the M15 or M13 lyre and strength 4 reeds for students. I play a bay ligature but I really don't think it matters very much.

    Do you have any tips as to how to play that high F in measure 32?

    • @EricChiClarinet
      @EricChiClarinet  9 років тому

      TheAlphaPawn It depends. If you can play high F by itself then you just need to relax when you play it in context. If you can't then it's a much bigger problem. Generally more mouthpiece and higher tongue position is needed.

    • @EricChiClarinet

      +Alexis Koladycz I would practice it counting eighth notes at first. That means 6 beats per measure and the eighth note gets the beat.

      @EricChiClarinet  8 років тому

      How open?

    • @jon7696
      @jon7696 8 років тому

      +Eric Chi Like a B45(119)

    • @EricChiClarinet
      @EricChiClarinet  8 років тому +1

      Make sure you are using a soft reed, probably a 3. I've never played anything more open than a B40 Lyre so you're going to have to experiment with where you place your bottom lip and how much bite to take. The facing is medium long so it shouldn't be too different.

  • @jon7696
    @jon7696 8 років тому

    What mouthpiece do you use?

    • @EricChiClarinet
      @EricChiClarinet  8 років тому

      +clarinetfanatic09 I play a variety of different mouthpieces depending on the situation. I usually recommend a Vandoren M13 lyre for students.

    • @jon7696
      @jon7696 8 років тому

      +Eric Chi I am currently on a RICO X0 mouthpiece and currently in the market for a new mouthpiece.I find it easy to have a good tone in the high register,but it feels resistant in the throat tone register.I have tried a variety of reeds:3.5,3.5+,and 4.It has a great tone quality,but I want something more open,but not to open so I can use a size 4 reed.

    • @jon7696
      @jon7696 8 років тому

      *too

    • @EricChiClarinet
      @EricChiClarinet  8 років тому

      +clarinetfanatic09 If you want to use a 4, you are going to have to buy a mouthpiece with a closed facing. You can look into Vandoren M13, M13 Lyre, and M15. If you want to buy a custom mouthpiece, the tip opening would have to be less than 105mm and most likely a long to medium long facing.
