Fast of all Sikh is worship of there guru(who teach the lesson of life and the a duty of a sikh). It's a religion who r famous in India for there hard work, passion, honesty and helpfulness. They r really strong then any other common indian and other people in Asia. Shik is a rase of a warrior. The symbol of shik is seen that they worship there gurus shod and chakra. Respect them and there religion because 1 shik can't afraid to fight against lots of people. Before I say they r warrior race so there is no doubt that 21 shik can't hesitate to fight or fall back when they know they all died in battle. I mean this area of the continent still fears sikhs ever since the invasion in the 1820s
Personally, I think the most metal part is that Gurmukh Singh, the signalman, asks for permission to take up his rifle and-despite knowing he’s all alone- goes through the trouble of packing away his equipment. That’s discipline.
@@saahiliyer11 a true dedicated professional soldier to the very end. mad respect to him from the Philippines.

Incredible. For 21 to fight hundreds before falling... I think men like Belisarius and Admiral Yi would be proud of them. ☺
Well, the sikhs most likely were trained, given good equipment (I dont want to know how many rifles, if they had any, failed of the attackers ) and a defensive position
These where men with rifles and where where trained in battles against the other tribes. ( The fighters where from only 1 tribe the Pashtun) and the the Pashtun themselves claim only 180 died.
Athalwolf implying centuries of tribal warfare didn't leave the Afghani's with skilled troops. They aren't defenseless, they are dangerous adversaries on the field.
This isnt the first time sikhs have done something like this, they generally tend to be really badass, history is full of examples.
Belisarius and Admiral Yi commanded thousands of troops and are best known for organising and coordinating large-scale battles, not for defending forts and borders. I'm sure they would be just as proud of those men as any other person would, but there's no relation.
... just WOW.... wow wow wow. That is so sad and powerful. Those chaps were so honorable against hopeless odds. The mettle of a person shines through in the face of adversity. Thank you for this share.

The conversation here is great! I'm glad issues of imperialism and the way it turns people against each other is being discussed! My aim here was to point out the other side of that as well, which is that no empire in history, be it the Roman, the Mongol or the British, is solely the work of the people who get to name it. They are often the ones we write about when we write history but that overlooks the contribution and sacrifice (willing or unwilling) of so many, whose efforts are essential to these vast entities.

@Extra Credits - Love your videos! Please do some videos on Indian History! There's a ton of fascinating content to be unearthed and presented!
This video is really good, because it refutes the black and white view people like to have of history. They just want "British Empire = bad", but reality isn't that simple.
@Extra Credits. @mankytoes. It is not just the issue of imperialism, but the away the video draws the Afghans as pure machine of war, bloodlust zombies, without adressing the context, without adressing the political issue behing this battle (the fact that the Patchuns were split, the constant english incursions in to their territory, the Great Game).
I know you guys like to do extremely orthodox history showing individuals as heroes and battles as acts of heroism and history break points, and I like it. But it's a very dangerous pass because it can make you pick sides, oversimplified things, and worst of all, desumanize individuals to show your point, as the afghans pictured at this video. History is never "Good vs Evil", is about how humans interact with world around them.
I hope you can get this critic as a advice, your videos are great, this in special just need a bit of more context.

Sikhs were nothing short of Legendary, They are basically the Vikings of India. Before the British arrived in India, The Islamic Mughal Empire ruled most of India. While Sikhism was a relatively new Monotheistic Faith, They were left untouched. Hindus were persecuted by Mughals and one day a bunch of Hindus went asking Sikh Guru (Leader) to protect them from Mughal Persecution and Torture.
The Sikhs were at that time allied with Mughals and had Trade Contacts with them and were prospering immensely. Any Reasonable Leader would have said - "Go away, its your problem, This is not our Fight". But the Sikh Guru didn't do that. He actually promised Hindus to shelter them and fight their Battles against the Mughals and thus started a century of Sikh - Mughal Battles.
They got involved in a Century long Conflict that benefited them in no way only to protect the Righteousness and few Good people from Tyranny and Oppression. And because of this we Hindus are even today very grateful to Sikhs - The Bravest of the Brave Warriors in History. One just has to say he is a Sikh and he deserves undisputed respect, Such is the Legacy of Sikh Warriors in History !!!
Actually it started with 5th guru who was executed for not behaving in "Islamic" ways, later on 9th Guru was tortured and murdered for not converting to Islam as if he converted, every north Indian Hindu would have. Then eventual death of Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj, who had to wage life long war of righteousness in which his 4 sons, wife and mother are killed.
lol, who says they were left untouched, everyone suffered some more some less!!

Texans like myself have always grown up hearing great stories about our states history. We have to take twice the history courses in school simply because its so extensive. There is a heavy patriotism to our home, so much so that when people online ask me my nationality, Texan feels like a more natural answer then American. Most every Texan knows the chants from our history: "Remember the Alamo. Remember Goliad". I had until now never known of the events at Saragarhi, but watching this video filled me with the same kind of spirit and patriotic vigor that I had for my people when I learned about my own history growing up. I had to remind myself that these events of unparalleled heroism in the small signaling village were the great war stories of other people and not the stories of mine. There is a hell of a lot of will and gut to knowingly give your life to a big cause in such a minute forgettable place. This video really moved me and I wanted that said.
Yes the Texans did a great job fighting for the right to perpetuate the institution of slavery in Texas territory when the Mexican government wanted to ban it.

@Mr Obamamacita there were no wars between hindus and sikhs but they fought i think 4 or 5 major all out wars against mughals and muslims you need to pay attention to your history classes gurugobind singh war was between mughals and sikhs no one paid the mughals harogobind war was between mughals and sikhs banda singh war again maharaja baghel war and these 4 wars had 27 big battles including the capture of red fort which was the sign of mughal empire and its strength in those days stop spreading your propaganda.
@Mr Obamamacita What you are even talking about ? More Hindu Sikh wars than Mughals?
To people questioning why Sikhs would do this for the British empire its because Sikhs historically have been a very martial people, the religion is centered around defending the defenceless and being a soldier for humanity. The video also does not mention the fact that these forts were there to keep British India safe from invading afghans (they were boarder forts) this was not a charge into Afghanistan or an invasion into Afghanistan it was 21 men defending their countries boarder.
Also because the Sikhs had gotten some very, very rough treatment at the hands of Islamic rulers over the generations, and this was remembered. If there's one group that would rally behind the British flag, it was the Sikhs.
The Sikhs were aligned with the Brits, they sold out the Indians.
They didnt "sell" anyone out. They joined forces with a friendly force that didn't try to massacre them.
Ford Prefect the Sikhs aligned themselves with the English because the British empire had used other Indians against the Sikhs during the second Anglo Sikh war, this is the war that cost the Sikhs there empire. Once the dust had settled the Sikhs had become loyal soldiers for the English, and being loyal soldiers they swiftly put down the Indian rebellion. I understand some groups of other Indians aren't fond of the Sikhs because of this but the British did treat certain groups of Indians better than others which in turn created resentment. Regardless historically Sikhs have been excellent warriors and in my opinion the Sikhs diaspora around the world has flourished remarkably. Btw I am English so I may be a little biased in my views but I do understand the British empire had not treated other Indians well which I think is a shame given the intellectual merit of most Indians.
+tytube3001 - STFU, I'm a Sikh & this is not true. Sikhs WERE THE LAST GROUP TO SURRENDER TO THE BRITISH. We fought till our last breath. The only reason the Sikh Empire fell in 1849, after successive victories, was because of greed, lust and power. Regardless, after the empire fell, the Sikhs were oppressed and were heavily guarded by the British. Sikhs never fought or stood for British values, Colonialism, and would never harm its own citizens. They believed in defending their motherland, India, against foreign invaders which in this case were Afghans. They did their duty and fought for wt was right! It does not matter for whom they were fighting but the cause. The Afghans did not penetrate the border, that's all that matters.

Heck YES. I would so watch it, it would be bad-ass! (Unless Hollywood White-Washes the whole thing, then I will be very Cranky.) It would be really appropriate too considering Modern Hollywood's efforts nowadays to be multi-ethnic.
This episode made me tear up. What a group of heroes. They stood their ground and fought their best, even if they must have felt overwhelmed. And that commander...what an honest and total badass. While I personally don't think it's wrong to have retreated in this situation, or that I would understand if they had defected considering how the British fort had abandoned them to their fate, what they did was truly honorable. Their sacrifice is more than worth remembering.
Edit: Also, the comments section raises some interesting questions. Yes, they were fighting for the British, but does that make their stance in the face of thousands of opponents any less valiant? I do not think so. No matter how well trained you are, the size of your group *does* matter - it is why we sing ode to great leaders of armed forces that were outnumbered and yet still won.
I believe this is another example of human individualism. Anyone can be perceived as "good" or "bad" if you look at them from *one point of view* or another. Regardless, they stood strong in the face of certain death, and that is what makes this an act of heroism.
This video is not talking about who was "good" and who was "bad", or who was on the "right" side of history and who was on the "wrong" side. Those things are debatable. What isn't debatable is the very real sacrifice these soldiers made in overwhelming circumstances. And that, is what this video covers. Like another commenter said, honour, courage and bravery are universal.
