My horse is a rescue. She was basically unhandled.
I used to take her for walks so that she could see all kinds of things she'd never been exposed to before. I figured if it was going to cause her to spook, I prefer for her to do it then instead of when I started to ride her.
I've barely ridden the last 4 years due to caring for family members. I've just started up again. We've been to a friend's that has a few acres of woods with trails through them twice now.
First time, she was a handful, but I was able to keep her under control.
This last time, she was much better, even when a deer came crashing out of the woods.
As the owner of reactive dog I totally get this. I mean I'm sure reactive horse is harder to handle. But I get what you mean. When something scary and triggering comes by and Hana doesn't flip her shit, I'm AMAZED and so happy and proud of her. Like she used to panic which trucks drove by on the road, getting crazy eyed and tugging on the leash and running back and forth. After lots of practice, now she looks a bit nervous but between using distracting techniques and treats, she's okay.

At 3:22, she's watching and drops her head in toward the cows. She looks like she's thinking about a future in cutting and penning to me! 😀
You know it's a nice, mild bunch of cows when the outrider isn't 50 yards up the hill, so great experience for Zara and she handled it really well.

Those weren't cowboys. I think you could have pushed those cattle better! Also I'm super jealous of anyone that has a national forest lease! It's the absolute best grass and they don't pay squat for them. They are usually handed down from generational leases
