She said "BUT SOME HOUSING ADVOCATES ARGUE THAT THIS ISSUE ISN'T AS PREVALENT AS SOME CONSERVATIVE LAWMAKERS ARE MAKING IT OUT TO BE". Does it matter how prevalent it is? It used to be called breaking and entering.

How many times does it have to happen before it’s common. This DOES happen and trust me it’s a pain in the ass. I work for property management company that provides state funded housing for people with mental and physical disabilities. We have empty units all over. We get a unit cleaned and repaired ready for occupation when we find out someone has kicked in a door purchased something from Amazon that comes next day and then they have a piece of mail with their address on it. Then won’t give their name so we file eviction on John Doe a property such and such. Then after months of waiting the judge orders them to leave and they leave. Then we fix the unit then the day after it’s fixed up and locked up the same individual does it all over again. These people have no accountability and most are on drugs and taking away from the disabled. The police are no help even when you can clearly see that the door frame is damaged by being kicked in. They say it’s a civil matter. Please I hope someone in our local government sees this and does something to create a law to make these folks take responsibility for what they do. On average it takes around 5-10k dollars to fix a unit after it’s been illegally occupied for a period of time. We have some buildings with 2-4 units with squatters they know exactly what to do. Has anyone else been affected by this. If this was 20 years ago these would have been felonies burglary or breaking and entering criminal damaging on my eyes these people should have no rights. Stealing is stealing whether it a can of soda a car or a house or an apartment

What if you get a rogue landlord who just wants to get tenants out without evicting them? I can see a lot of legal issues with this bill already

That's why a person should always have a signed lease.

This would end if people were only allowed to own 1 house. Landlords exploit people for a basic human need.

I disagree - only reason I disagree is because landlords have to compete against other landlords on the basis of price. If landlords raise price above market rate they get screwed or have vacancy... Also - this is Ohio, in most of Ohio we have tons of vacant houses (except Columbus). People don't want to live in Dayton, Akron, Cleveland, or Toledo. That's why rents are so low. And then in the expensive suburbs (which have lower crime, better roads, better schools) rents are higher.

Why not make a very simple law? Tenant rights only exist if there is a notarized rental agreement between parties. This document should be recorded with the county. Anything else is not valid proof of tenancy.
