    My favorite blade shape and handle design is the Canadian military belt knife. It won a design award and it's in the Smithsonian Institute. Years ago I bought the cold steel version. I liked it so much I bought numbers 1 to 4 of the real versions with wooden handles and leather sheaths. But I use the Coldsteel version in my kitchen everyday. Razor sharp, I just use a steel rod for honing. I got the #1 in a flat grind. It is the thinnest knife in my over 200 collection.

    It is a great utility work blade. Especially for those who
    work with wiring and electrical work. The flatter point helps prevent unwanted punctures. I carry a Bestech Cubis everyday for a utility knife. Something about the blade shape feels good in the hand. The cleaver blade serves a purpose but could be considered situation specific.

    Another great knife video review. I like cleaver style blades. They are very good for edc carry & work. I don’t know about other people but I’m not stabbing or piercing a lot of things with my knife. Most people are cutting/slicing materials or food. If people are worried about self defense with a lack of a point. Most knife fights or attacks are slices not penetration. I worked in a prison and most knife attacks were offenders slicing offenders and not piercing. So a cleaver style blade is a great choice for edc or heaven forbid you’d have to use it in a defensive situation.

    • @hunterglaspell

      I completely concur! Cleavers do have a point, it’s just more obtuse depending on the model. They are basically larger, Beefier sheepfoots. The replace a blade utility blades that are more used than any pocket knife in most trades have a very similar profile. Almost nobody needs a really pointy knife. I hunt, and even find a less pointy knife easier to use and less likely to bust a gut 🤢.

    It's the most practical and well-designed pocket-clever of the bunch I have seen in years! I would still modify its tip a bit, though, by grinding off some material to make it more "pointy". And of course: over travel stop and better materials options and bronze washers would make this folding clever knife more attractive to me personally. Great review, thumbs up!

    I like using Chinese kitchen cleavers and camp cleavers, but I always thought cleaver folders were a weird concept until I got a Tomahawk cleaver from Artisan Cutlery. Felt very balanced in hand and being a cleaver user the lack of a tip wasn't a problem for me. Mine is a bit heavy for EDC, but a good knife to keep in my drawer for easy access.

    My Dad always carried a stockman pocket knife. But he said other than cleaning his fingernails, the sheepsfoot blade was the only blade he used.
    I edc a fixed blade. And not a small one. I rotate the TOPS Brakimo and the Prather War Bowie. Every day.
    For the last two years, my pocket knife of choice has been the Gerber Flatiron. It’s not expensive. And it’s tough as nails. Sharp enough to cut you just by looking at it.
    I’ve carried a knife since I was 8 years old. That’s over 56 years. I’ve carried just about every kind of folder, from clip point, drop point, automatic, otf, opinel, balisong, hawkbill… you name it, I’ve carried it.
    There is nothing wrong with the cleaver blade. If you can’t do 95% of your knife duties with a cleaver style blade, perhaps you should work on your skills a little more.
    And wth is wrong with bell bottoms?!
    Keep up with the knife polls Aaron, this is getting interesting. 👍🏼👍🏼

    Hey, one more thing, my favorite folding knife… is the Cold Steel Pocket Bushman.

  • @hunterglaspell
    @hunterglaspell Рік тому

    The truth is, most people don’t need a knife with a super pointy tip. 99% of daily tasks (box opening and food prep) can be easily done with a cleaver. They are stronger, generally have taller grinds and therefore more slicy, and have a point (though more obtuse) that can get through almost anything something like a tanto can. Unless you are an assassin or tactical operative, you don’t need a knife with a pointy tip. Hell, as an avid hunter, I find them more convenient than the clip point gut busters your get with buck knives. Cleavers are essentially just larger sheepsfoot or wharncliffes, depending on the style. Utility knife blades have a very similar profile, and they are the most used cutting tool in the trade today. Very productive if you know how to cut with one. And fixed blade cleavers can be impromptu hatchets in a pinch.

    I EDC the Mini Sheepdog from Kizer fairly often. Cleavers have a useable point, it's just more of a right angle instead of a more acute angle of a point. If you really need the pointier tip, then cleaver may not be for you, but I use mine just fine.

  • @realbroggo
    @realbroggo Рік тому +1

    Missed the poll. I'm a big believer in the right knife for the right situation. There is no doubt that a clip point is more versatile - so a good choice if you're not sure what you're going to be doing that day. (Although I don't like those extreme swoop clip points.) For me cleavers (esp. big chunky cleavers) are just a bit more restricted due to the lack of point and (potentially) less sharpened edge. If forced to choose between clip & cleaver for an EDC blade then it's a clip point. FYI, of these two blades I choose neither - much better available elsewhere. Sharp blades all.

  • @TRDGE
    @TRDGE Рік тому +2

    I guess I'm in the 31%. Though it's a little misleading because between the two if I was forced to only EDC a blade style it would include a blade optimized for more of a penetrating edge. That being said, I love cleaver style knives. One of my favorites is the Barber series from Berg Blades especially the damascus special edition.

    It's worth considering that some of the votes in your poll were probably driven by those 2 knives specifically because there are other reasonably popular cleaver style designs out there (*cough* sheepdog *cough*) that have both more belly and much more of a point to the tip making them more useful than the Kershaw design, which reminds me more of a straight razor than a cleaver.

    The whole folding/EDC cleaver concept is completely lost on me. When I think of a cleaver, I think of a knife that has between a 4.5" and 6" blade, about 3/16ths thick, weighing about a pound-and-a-half or better, and designed to go crashing through animal bones and ligaments/tendons/etc. 🤷‍♂

    I carry pocket cleavers fairly frequently. I find I don’t often miss a super pointy tip, and I am more than happy to sacrifice that for a tall thin slicey blade that outcuts most pokey knives I have.
    What I find is funny is that non-knife people tend to have the opposite reaction to them than I would expect. I’ve found that these people react very negatively, and seem intimidated or scared by the cleavers whenever they see them. Whereas a more normal looking clip or drop point does not elicit much of a reaction.
    Probably it’s just because it’s so different from what they expect, they think it’s more dangerous for some reason. I’ve had many people look at me with apprehension and say, “that’s a scary knife!” when holding something like a Flatiron.
    I try to explain that it’s actually less “scary” because it doesn’t have a stabby point…but that doesn’t seem to change their minds!

    G'day Aaron, the whole range has very stick like handles, .... not sure what that's about.
    Apart from the obvious food prep application, this one reminds me of a cut throat razor, ....... a bit of grooming on the go perhaps ; ) and as a fellow ex-sparkie, not dissimilar to designs specifically produced for the wire jerker, and furthermore, nautical folders have always been, and still are, sheepsfoot/clever tips, (though in fairness generally without much of a belly, if any). So if you have the need ..... fill your boots, there's a long history there and a range of very good reasons not to use a pokey fella. In the fixy arena; everything from a butchers cleaver, to parangs, to a skrarma or other seax type design, one could argue a hatchet/axe, even a saw, falls in the same category, ...... i.e. clearly not stabbing or boring tools. Personally, I'll always have at least one "piercer" on me, (or at least within reach), and not necessarily for defence, just too useful to do without IMO. Cheers Duke.

And anything smaller than that like the CRKT Minimalist makes no sense to me personally. Just limits the applications of the knife. That being said, a wharncliffe is one of my favorite designs. Cleaver designs are not my thing & Kershaw/ZT/KAI have none existent international customer service so their products are a no go.
    They outright refused to honor their warranty.
    That seems to be becoming a trend with US companies btw.

    I'm sure it has its place, just not gonna be in my pocket. Not a fan of the look of it or the handle. I'm sure functionality is fine. Hard pass
