Today I am going to talk about the Anglo Indian community living in Bow Barracks Kolkata. They are the descendants of British and Indians who married during the colonization period in Kolkata. This is the last big community of them and we are going in to check it out.

i love how you never forgets to mention "born in Venezuela" to everyone! never forget your roots!! nice one bro!
believe me it gets tiring soon
Hush! Trump is here!
They say....,.Remember who you are and where you came from 😄
Half Venezualan and half american?how come??? 🙄🙄🙄
The way u introduce urself is best after James bond 007 ...😀😀❤️
Being an Anglo Indian who’s grandparents lived in Calcutta many moons ago, it was amazing to be able to get a glimpse of the famous Bow Barracks that we’ve heard stories about as kids! I’m now a fellow American of yours. Thank you for a great video.
I like how u said “many moons ago”
Nice phrase.will use it in future
You're anglo bengali not indian
Wow! Here I am sitting in Chicago, it’s been 12 years since I left Calcutta and I just came across your videos today! Some of them are just a few weeks old! It’s like seeing Calcutta through your lens, and remembering what I love about the place! You are spot on when you said that Calcutta doesn’t like to change, it remains the same! Yes there are lot of things to improve, but the love for football, biriyani, gulab jamun, fish, sense of community and occasionally a little surprise of a home made ginger wine from the amazing Anglo indian community makes me remember my childhood ! The best thinks about the place is the diversity ! Thank you and your channel needs to get to a million subscribers fast !!
@Nux what is your problem
@Pritam Das hey yeah
Singer started singing the song at 22:25, and made a romantic vibe in the air. And the last when they are in roof he ended it. ❤️ Lovely.
@Joel Juan Kaun hai vai tu?
@Joel Juan sahu bola 😹😹
The aunty filling water from the roadside tap spoke better English than the TV interviewer
That's because she was the anchor of a bangla channel..And exactly why she would choose a bangla channel than an english news channel
..
She is expected to speak better bangla , not better english... Stop judging people...
😆😄 hmm.., that doesn't matter. English is just a language. If you can communicate & put your opinions in the front I think that's a great deal.
English is not our Mothers Tongue. But we can try to speak English. If anybody can not speak properly his or her Mothers Tongue it will be shamefull but if anyone can not speak English properly where is funny on that? Try to respect people you British Bulldog. It is DD BANGLA not DD ENGLISH. It does not mean that I hate English language.I love English language and always try to learn it. But it does not mean that I should feel shy if I can not speak or write English perfectly. If a German don't know English he never fell Shy, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel can not speak English. If a Russian can not speak English properly never feel shy, Russian President Vladimir Putin don't know English. If a Spanish speaking person can't speak English properly he never fell shy, Leo Messi can't speak English. If a Portuguese speaking person cannot speak English he never feel shy. Neymar Jr. can't speak English. If a French can't speak English he never feel shy. If a Chinese can't speak English he never feel shy. Then why does Indians? They does feel shy because of the status symbol made by the society of two hundred years slavery. Fuck this status hypocrisy.
@@utsabmoitra1245 👍👍👍
Well english isnt synonymous with education you see! Its just a language! Many people from bengali medium background isnt that proficient with english but you ask us technical question, we will be at par 😊
I never comment on UA-cam channels but buddy your channel is the most real and authentic channel which I love to watch, you are really interested in the places .. you visit.. their history ..the people etc and it shows...Love it.. keep up the good work..!!

Yeah buddy come to the city of joy kolkata because this city really creates a lot of history.

There's a small Chinese community, Jewish community & Afghani community in Kolkata
They are small knit community as most of them went back to their country (Israel,China,UK) or other western countries.

The man you said hello at 3:32 his name is Jason and he is a friend of mine. wow!!!
Nothing wrong in mentioning Venezuela...It is ur correct identity....
lol it's just annoying to repeat the same punch line again and again.. might as well just say American and get it done with since most are just people he wont even know ever again.
Its a wonderful country.
Chances are 99% of the guys he meets dont know Venezuela. Might as well say america and be done with it
@@HolyFosterConner hmm.. chances are high
he probably says it because of his accent, so he just gets it over with before anyone asks.
You just won the heart Carlos of all the bongs of kolkata by saying time passed by but Kolkata somehow remained the same...!!!😊its indeed the city of joy and glad to see you loving it and gave your precious time during Christmas to our city..!!cheers mate👌🏻
We need to progress like other cities doing in India otherwise we will be left behind

Kolkata is a dead city. The filth is unimaginable.
Bow Barracks was originally a housing set up for American soldiers stationed in British occupied Kolkata during the period of WW2. The American soldiers didn't want to live there (i forget why) and then it was passed down later as residence for the Anglo Indians. Thank you for covering this important part of history.

Being a native of Kolkata, I agree with you 100%. It's like walking in a museum. You see the good and bad both, along with multiple ethnic groups and cultures meshing together. And this video was very well made. Keep going bro!
Carlos, you forgot to mention that, Kolkata was the 2nd MOST IMPORTANT CITY of the British Empire ( first is London for obvious reason ). This is the former capital of India, not just another Indian city.
@melg6834
Good point. Well said!
Carlos seems like someone that'd be cool to hang out with, ughh wish i had a friend like Carlos in UK :(
im a chinese indian and i grew up in bow barracks in the 4th unit ground floor facing Nalanda Udyan Park but left 58 years ago with my family to canada. at the time there werent any Christmas event like its now (at least i dont recall), nice that they are doing that.
as im getting on age I been searching for my roots online but had no idea the neighborhood i grew up in was famous, they even made a movie there. I've seen a few videos but i must say your coverage is the best, interviewing the vendors, the residents and even going into their home has brought back alot of memories. i now want to go back for a visit and enjoy Christmas there. many thanks.
We miss you Volpe. I remember the last December in 2019, you came here in Kolkata and lived for so long time. I especially had a great time to see you in the streets of Kolkata. I know it's idiotic but let me tell you one thing nobody has experienced Kolkata before like you did. We live you Volpe. Please come back as quickly as possible.
The best part is when you said Kolkata has stayed the same...Its very delightful when someone like you feels it and rejoice it
You are a genius man ....you came to Kolkata recently but with the short span of time you got lot of informations about City of Joy. Hopefully we will have some brilliant episodes on Kolkata and it's surrounding areas from you. Merry Christmas bro....

Anglo Indian in the US. I am proud of my roots. My family is from Calcutta and Asansol. Did my dna test and I am the perfect blend of the term Eurasian…that term was coined for us initially. My great grand parents worked in the coal mines and also served in the British military. Have photos of great-great-great-great-grandfather (early 1800s) in Lahore. He was a merchant with his English wife. Then his kiddo, who all the boys in the family resemble. He was in the military. Looking at all the old photos from the 1800s and trying to understand how they lived their lives away from their home and everything they knew. They went on a wild and unknown adventure and now we have roots all over the globe. Thank you for this!
Very interesting. I'm wondering why anglo Indians left India? Is it because they didn't feel accepted there? Or they could leverage their heritave to get into the west for better opportunities.
Kolkata is a heaven for every religion .... Weather it's Hindu Muslims or Christians ..... That's why it is known as the city of joy .... Thanks Volpe for coming here ♥️♥️♥️♥️

I love this. My family are Anglo-indian through and through. Both my parents were born and raised in Kolkata and came to London in the 80s but the anglo traditions still live on here within the Anglo-indian communities. We are definitely one of a kind. Proud to be Anglo-indian! Thanks for this video ❤️
My dad's workplace was in Bow Street and I have some fond memories of Bow Barracks. Everyday after finishing school, I used to accompany Dad to his workplace and then spend the whole day playing with the kids in Bow Barracks and the ground near it. This video brought back so many memories. ❤️

Being a Bengali in Kolkata, and spending my maximum teenage year close to Bow Barrack made everything so nostalgic
Carlos what can I add, u hv made me firmer in my decision to resettle in a city I knew only in early childhood, after migrating west then settling in Malaysia I long for that community spirit that I juz saw & still can't find in either Mumbai or Pune my adopted hometown, everything is commercialised there, neighbours are juz that they invite u over occasionally juz to know ur status or show theirs off till u distance urself, thank you once again for showcasing a still beautiful city of joy.

I'm from northeast, Mizoram. I've lived almost 6 years in north India. Whenever I go home to Mizoram, on reaching Kolkata, I use to feel as if I've arrived home.
Like we feel whenever we see Howrah Bridge or arrive at Dumdum.

You are not bengali
The buildings looks like British architecture, the lady that was interviewing you was speaking in bangla. So it looks like everyone in Calcutta speaks Bengali correct me if I’m wrong.
Most. A small community of North Indians, mostly businessmen, speak Hindi. But almost all Calcuttans understand Hindi, and speak a little as well, because of the closeness of the Hindi and Bengali languages
Merry Christmas to you & Sophie ...

Its been more than 30 years now, me born and living in India and haven't even traveled 10% of it. Completely unaware of Bow barrack community until I saw your videos. You are lucky to have visited there. And thank you for exploring India and acknowledging it in nicest possible way. Your videos are addictive, unedited and simple and relaxing.
Xavy was busy and I just checked him out at the backdrop of the interviewer.. My heart is with bow barracks as my schooling was from La Martiniere kolkata and I had friends like creig sheig, Greg, Jason Martin, Malcolm Hatton, Aubrey price and I love the Christmas party here
Must visit Bolpur (3 hrs from Kolkata) , famous "Poush mela" festival is going on there.... Where you can see the 'Baul' community, the real Folk Community of Bengal... You can experience authentic folk culture there.... Must visit....

✨🎄Thanks Carlos for giving us a glimpse into our own Community's celebration of Christmas. I have yet to see Calcutta but if I ever I do get a chance post COVID to travel to India in the future I will put it on our family's itenary. We emmigrated to Australia from our home town in Bangalore. Your story about home made wines took me down memory lane to some cherished memories of my dad. He was a champ at making home made grape wine, sherry, OT which is a type of ginger wine etc. Christmas cake and pudding, rose cookies, sweet coconut puffs, coconut sweet or burfi, kul kuls, Dhol Dhol frosted diamond cuts and halwas were some of the traditional regular home made favourite sweets in Eurasian and Anglo Indian homes at Christmas time. Carol singing was yet another cherished Anglo Indian activity during the Christmas season. Thanks again for bringing us a snippet of life in a community that has and continues to cherish its traditions over the years. Enjoyed your post.
Cheers and Good Luck. 🍀
