- How to Setup Canister filters on a saltwater Aquarium - Fluval FX6 - Reef tank filtration. NO MORE AQUARIUM SUMP! I'm using two Fluval FX6 canister filters on my 126 gallon saltwater aquarium. The sump under the tank is gone. I will miss my protein skimmer but it will be fine. No more salt creep, loud tank, messy nasty sump or splashing. These two Fluval FX6 canister filters will provide filtering up to 800 gallons since I don't use anything but the foam that comes with the canister filters. I'll keep you all posted. I'm so much happier. The tank is so much quieter as well.

glad to see another person using canister or hang on back filters. I've been realizing more and more that saltwater doesn't have to be complicated and simple stuff like canisters or hang on back filters are plenty for reef tanks. I honestly think it's all a way to get your money out of your pocket and give you another reaason to buy something else.
Best comment ever, jajaja
Been in the hobby for over a decade. And i only use HOB due to low cost and ease of use. been working great for me. Recently ive been thinking of switching to a Canister just for a cleaner look
YES. I spent so much damn money on the hobby trying out so many things and making my own reactors and stuff. It was fun experimenting. I still have ideas. If I get a larger tank I'm going to be customizing the sump or whatever I use for what I want and what I feel would be best. Not sure when or if that would happen.
I’m glad you said this. Bc I have been out of the hobby for four years but was in the freshwater side for about 8 years and trying saltwater for the first time but damn so many ppl say the same thing it’s like all everyone’s knows until someone tries it and it works. I’m glad I read this bc I’m a canister person and I think it helps that ppl have success with saltwater tanks
I have done the same, love my canister filters.
I hated salt creep too. It never ceased to amaze me how far salt creep got from the tank's footprint. I love seeing people go with simpler systems!
Crazy just did the same thing. I put an fx 4 with my fx 6 as I have a smaller tank
Yes I'm with you I have 3 Sunsun filters 35 gal , 65 gal and 125 gal. My 215 coming next week will be running Fuval F6
When you clean your filter and dump the water out, do you top off the filter with salt water or rodi water?
I've been running a Fluval FX6 on my 65 gallon mixed reef for 8 months now. It's been going so well that I just started a 35 gallon cube with a fluval 407. I'm glad to see more canister filters on salt water tanks, for some reason the saltwater community gives so much crap for those that doe something a little different. FYI, bio media is your friend, the more the better in your canister filter. Good luck!
yes, it's good to see more and more. A lot of hobbies have snobs and the saltwater community has some of the worst from what I've seen...been a little better though. I won't use any bio in my filter; I rely on the rock and sand. Less to clean. I just use it for filtration. Throw the old pads I add away and rinse the ones that came with the filter. Good luck!
i have 180 LTS tank with fluval 407, Sps and lps wih All For Reef. No3: 4 . PO4: 0.07 Hanna. ITS PERFECT.
Love my fx4 on a 75 g reef tank soooo clean
I have a canister for my 90 l tank im very happy
@@gspumpkinsandmore5866you only have one running on your 75. I have one too on my 75 thinking of a second one.
I am using a cannister filter because I turned my fresh water tank to a marine tank. But while I was doing my research, I almost got discouraged to set a marine tank up because of the sump police.
My tank is doing great. I'm having problems with aptasia now. But overall, I enjoy it. And maintenance is not that difficult.
Nice. How many times you do water changes and how often you clean your canister?
I have a sump setup and barely any salt creep. It’s absolutely silent too. If I didn’t have it, I could not run a decent skimmer. I also run UV and I understand some canisters have them built in but realistically they are useless in a marine tank. Loads of room for media and even for temporary holding of fish and corals. I also run a canister filter on the sump for extra polishing and to use as a booster filter on new setups / quarantine tanks etc. can also be used as media reactor. Canister is good for initial setup but after a few years you will struggle to control nutrients and FX6 in particular are known to leak at the bulkheads. You should buy a new stand and reinstall the sump. Use one fx6 as a polisher/ reactor, the other as a maintenance vac.
I thought of the canister as a polisher long before. That's a great idea. Before I consider a sump again I'm going to design something or get something that makes more sense to me. I'd like to be able to skim more area than what the average protein skimmer skims - that always bothered me. I have replacement rings and nozzles for the FX6 for when / if I need them. I will replace all rings maybe every 6 months.
@@ROTTERtube little food and clean your fluval every 2 or 3 weeks depending on your parameters and you do not need a skimmer
@@ROTTERtubedid you not consider the Eheim 2262 canister filter? It’s a beast of a filter.
I have 6 reef tanks. 5 have sumps. One is a 60 g tank with a fluval canister that I run biological filtration only fulled with chunks of oyster shells and coral, Of my 6 tanks it seems to have a more stable Kh -- so far anyway in the 1.5 years of running it. For biological filtration I use the reef and for export I use a hang on back skimmer and sand syphoning. Its pretty low maintenance but I don't have a lot of corals in it -- mostly mushrooms and some frogspawn, 3 fish and one shrimp.
Sounds like a nice simple setup that works.
I have a sump with a fleece filter hard plumbed and have no salt creep atoll . A used to get it loads when I had a filter sock and also noise but now it runs silent apart from my skimmer which I only here if I’m under the tank doing anything. My friend has just cycled his first marine tank with canister filters so I’m interested to see how he gets on . I’m on the sump side of things for now but if I didn’t get my fleece roll filter . I would maby go external. But if u ever try your sump again try to get a fleece roll filter . I have a Clarisea gen 2 and it lasts about 8 weeks . Also very easy to pop of a roll and new one on in 5 minutes.
Thanks for the great comment. I always wondered about those fleece filters. I'm sure I'll try a sump again with a new setup. maybe a larger tank. we'll see.
I have oase biomaster thermo. With pre filter and build in heater. The pre filter is easy to clean. You dont have to open the cannister filter to clean.
are they quiet? thanks
@@reeferkenneth8657 yes
I starteda redsea260max with canister filtre.👍✌️👍
Plus i made if i want to add the second pompe
...for cycling just biomedia......for the moment no sponge
Some tips... how is working???
I love the canister filters! After a little more than 6 months or more I went back to sump. Main reason being, the monthly cleaning of them via removing them from the stand, carrying them, etc., was getting a little much, since my back has been getting a little worse.
Build one Steve come on diy
Oase thermo 350 thermo check it out
I am wanting to do this. Can you send me a link to the pipe you used from fx6 to sump pipe work. Thanks
what do you mean pipe from FX6 to sump? I'm using 3/4" surgical tubing from BRS and 3/4" pvc pipe.
Great video as always. I went in the opposite direction. I had an fx6 and then transitioned to a sump. I could never control the nitrates when I was running the canister. Plus I hated pulling the canister out every month for a cleaning. So I reasoned that the sump would solve my problems. Turns out the sump didn't solve my nitrates problem at all. But eventually I found that vodka works great for nitrates given enough time to work. But vodka also grows white slime bacteria in all my plumbing. Everything in this hobby is a trade off, so i never critisize others approach. I think i will stick with the sump but I can understand why many prefer a canister. This is such a difficult hobby!!!!!! And all I do is fowler. I have no idea how others do corals. Guess a guys gotta know his limits
For nitrates, try just plain table sugar, white sugar. I used about a teaspoon a day and after 2 weeks, nitrates were really low. Worked great. At times I was doing 2 teaspoons or so a day.
I would not get metal stand for saltwater tank.
I've never not had canisters on my 150 reef
How often do you clean them?
I go 3 months. 3 aqua top cf 500s and I run chemipure in all.
Am looking at just adding more flow and only running 1 canister. Just add in 25% weekly water changes
What are your plans for ato?
I don't have any. I add water every other day to the overflow chamber. So easy to see. I'll do a simple video on it. I never used ATO. Just something else to fail.
Having done cannister filters for like 15 years and switching to a sump, will never go back to cannister again. If its all you can do, they are fine, but if you have a tank with an over flow set up, it is a huge downgrade IMHO.
I may go sump again some day. For now I like this. What didn't you like about it. why did you switch.
@@ROTTERtube Hauling the canister filter in and out of the stand, the limited space in it for media, Sump allows for giant blocks of media, room for a heater, and most importantly I can use a fleece roller.
@@KoiBoy6 Taking it out of the stand is easy. There is A LOT of space in this FX6. IT' S HUGE (up to 400 gallon filtration), I never put blocks or anything in my sump and the sump gets nasty. I'll be cleaning the canister way more than my sump. I put my heater in my overflow. They won't break that way, and a couple other reasons. We'll see how it goes.
