    I have been painting and tying jigs for Walleye for 35 years. Your technique for adding stripes is outstanding, wish I new this years ago. Thanks, never to old to learn.👍😂

    Christian 👌

    I could see that working very well in a clear water lake, nice perch pattern!

    Thanks great pattern. I'm glad you did a perch as I do a lot of those myself. I will tie some of this tonight. Liked how the yellow went around the entire jig. I tie with a black on top only, then some type of green on both sides and a yellow or orange on bottom. I'll also try more flash on mine. Great job, thanks again.

      +Don Kampf Thank you for requesting that, it is good practice to do different stuff every now and again. I haven't done a walleye specific bucktail in quite some time because I only target walleye 2 or 3 times a season but this was good practice and fun for something different. If you have any thing else just let me know and if I know how to do it I will put it up for you, thanks again for requesting the jig and thanks for watching!!!

    I tie very similar styled jigs here in Australia but I like tying in UV polar chenille over my thread in matching or differing colours...I enjoy watching your videos and tying work as your very inspirational to my tying efforts.. best regards to you from B.J.

    • @smalljaw

      Thank you very much B.J.!!!!! When I use a chenille over top of a thread collar I use a product by Jay Fair called Long Shuck. A little different look than the polar chenille but I understand what you are doing, I may do something like that now that I think about it!!

    Love the tie! Perch are to eyes as croaker are to Sea Trout! Both will destroy them! As a kid a bucktail jig was king fishing for eyes! Especially in Great Lakes Area and Midwest Rivers. No feathers, rubber or flash back then and they would destroy them! And the savy fisherman would fish for smallies especially along the Rock riprap against the lake concrete retaining walls. But one question wouldn't top be at the eye, hook up? And colors reversed? Wait? I are not the one with the you tube channel showing people how to tie jigs!! I love Bucktail Jigs! You can catch bass, eyes and muskies in saltwater? I haven't found a fish that won't hit a bucktail! In a brown or a pink color! Thanks Byrne

      Thank you Michael!!! I did screw this up as the countershading is indeed backwards!!!! I was doing these for a trip and was in a hurry. I did 3 jigs in a row before I realized my mistake and then went back and discovered I posted the jig on my channel. Oh well, it happens and BTW, I still caught fish on the messed up one...LOL!!!

    Fall fishing now on Mille lacs. No live bait on Mille lacs this year, except for the launches. all walleye catch and release. Great success on hair this year. Largest walleye 31.5 inches. Small mouth went crazy on this pattern. Fished this 132,000 acre lake 12 times 25 - 30 fish each time, mostly on this pattern. Largest 22.5 inches, average 18 inches. Thanks. 3 times did not see another boat.

    That was a beautiful color combo and flash choice for a perch pattern. That's my favorite style jig head too. To be honest, as fun as it is, I don't know if I'd bother with the stripes. Those colors blended and looked translucent because the yellow hair was tied 360 and the you went sparse overall. Great job my man! Thanks again sj :o)

    Thanks for the perch jig demo . I always enjoy your videos as a novice jig tyer I find them very helpful. My question is ,when you do an imitation like this I notice that the color scheme would seem to be upside down when retrieving the jig ,(green on the bottom orange on the top) Is this meant to simulate a injured perch or is it really an issue which way the colors go? Or am I just overthinking the whole thing?

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  8 років тому +4

      +albertapeet Thank you for the kind words and thanks for watching!!! You have a great eye!!!!! I was wondering is anyone would notice the reverse counter shading and you did, great job!! I did not intentionally do that and only realized I made a mistake after I uploaded it, but on that type of jig it isn't critical. It is 3/16oz with a 1/0 hook not meant for hanging suspended with a minnow on it, it is going to be actively jigged in 6' to 10' of water so falling straight down means the counter shading doesn't have to be perfect but you are right, it is upside down.

  • @paddletrucker

    Have you ever considered or tried some chenille around the collar? I was thinking some thinner polar chenille maybe

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  8 років тому +1

      +paddletrucker I do use chenille sometimes and I use it around the collar just like you mentioned, It can be used for holding scent and also flash or color contrast, adding polar chenille to the collar of a jig like this would be a great addition, try it and see how it comes out!!!

    • @otalldon5582
      @otalldon5582 8 років тому +1

      +paddletrucker yep I like putting chenille on the collar, like smalljaw said, gives more flash and place to put scent. But it also changes the jig's profile, gives it a thicker body. I sometimes hackle them with feathers too. Smalljaw always has the best video's. I've learned so much from them.

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  5 років тому +1

      Mark, I don't drop shot with it but I have used it like the Damiki rig. If you aren't familiar it is just vertical fishing with the jig suspended above the fish. Most of my fishing with this jig is slow swimming or bottom hopping.

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  7 років тому +5

      Thanks for the comment, perhaps you can put a video up showing me how you do it. I'm not perfect nor do I claim to be, I try to do this slow and in steps making it easy to follow and the fact that the color pattern is upside down really doesn't make a difference in how it is tied. Most who watch this will know the countershading is wrong and it has been pointed out by other viewers, so it may be garbage but the technique is sound but I would like to see you tie it so that I may learn and get better, thanks.
