#Cholinergic_Drugs ( #Parasympathomimeticts )
#Cholinergic Drugs are those drugs which give action similar to #acetylcholine .
They give their action by directly binding to the cholinergic receptors or by
indirect process .
#Classification_of_cholinergic_drugs
1) Direct Acting #Cholinergic Agonist
these drugs produced actions similar to ACh by directly interacting with
cholinergic receptors .
#Acetylcholine , #Methacholine , #Carbachol , Bethanechol. Pilocarpine .
2) Indirect Acting Agents ( #Anticholinestrase )
These drugs inhibit the enzyme cholinestrase , this enzyme inactivates the
Acetylcholine . #Physostigmine ( this can cross blood brain barrier )
#Neostigmine ( this can't cross blood brain barrier ) .
#Pharmacological Actions
1) #Muscarinic_Action
a) Heart : bradycardia ( slow down heart rate )
b) Blood Vessels : dilates blood vessels , lowers blood pressure
c) Respiratory System : bronchoconstriction
d) smooth muscles : contracts smooth muscles
e) Exocrine Gland : Increase secretion ( saliva ,HCL , Pancreatic Juice )
f) GI Tract : Increase peristalsis Movement .
g) Urinary Bladder : Contraction
h) Eye : Contraction of Pupils
2) Nicotinic Action
a) Skeletal Muscle : contraction
b) CNS : ACh does not cross BBB , but if injected directly into brain and
stimulates initially and then depresses.
#Indications
#Acetylcholine is mainly used in experimental studies , and has limited clinical
value because of following reasons .
1) It is rapidly hydrolysed by the #Pseudocholinesterases .
2) It spread widely and diffuses in easily and thus does not produce a selective
pharmacological action .
3) It can not be administered orally as it immediately hydrolysed and degraded
by gastric enzymes .
#Methacoline is not used nowadays .
Carbachol shows action on M and N receptors non selectively , so no longer in
use .
#Bethanechol Is in use as
1) In case of gastroparesis , postoperative abdominal distension .
2) In case of urinary bladder retention .
Dose
#Bethanechol : 5 or 10 mg tablets , 10-30 mg 3-4 times in a day .
Contraindications
1) Hyperthyroidism : choline ester may precipitate cardiac arrhythmias .
2) Bronchial Asthma : choline ester may precipitate bronchospasm .
3) Peptic ulcer : choline ester may increase gastric acid secretion .
4) Myocardial Infarction : choline ester may cause hypotension and form
conduction block .

You prepare good notes on each topic and you try to teach in best possible way but my only request is if you don’t know about any subject or point please don’t teach it incorrect. Like muscarnic receptors has nothing to do with mushroom . And if you follow dr Najeeb who I follow from last 10 years then please get your concept clear Because what you will teach students will learn that and when I see Dpharma students level it’s pathetic. Good point is you are doing good thing . Please take my criticism positively

Muscarine is the prototypical agonist for all muscarinic receptors (muscarine is an alkaloid derived from mushrooms and is associated with toxicity when poisonous mushrooms are ingested).
