hello friends... this is a song I wrote for my dear Godmother/Aunty who died not long before this session. This was SUPER fresh tune and I have never recorded it other than this session. I absolutely love the RODE ribbons and am so VERY proud they are made here in Australia and in particular I am inspired by the 100% Australian owned Company CEO’s deep commitment to arts philanthropy in Australia - truly extraordinary. Legit LEGEND.
ps the lyrics are here below - my dear Aunty Maurn Cummings/Maudsley was a music teacher (ps she taught at Newcastle High, which I believe was the home of the Silverchair dudes) and was a hard working cover’s musician in Newcastle.
Not longer before her death, her dear soulmate Graham died, so this song is about that.....knowing they were together brought us peace x
This is simply one take, just me and the piano and 3 ribbon mikes. I record all my albums live - I believe it is the only way to record in order to capture the imperfect magic. I am not interested digitally manipulated music. 100% live forever!!!!
    HOME/ YOU ARE HOME
    @Katie Noonan
I looked out across the bay and thought of you and your smile
Looking out at your home town and wishing I could hold you
Remember standing ‘round the kitchen in Corona Street
Sneaking treat from your apron and calling me your darl
And then rain started to fall and it seemed to fit my confusion
But soon the sun’s rays made the sky sing
Cause you are with him now
In a better place, out of pain
You are with with him now
In a safe place, free from harm
    You are home
The song was loud and mighty the largest I’ve seen
It felt like you were saying goodbye and letting me know you were fine
Cause I’m not gonna focus on the fading end
but on the light that shone bright throughout
The arch was huge, just like the love you had to give
So proud and giving ’til the end
Cause you are with him now
In a better place, out of pain
You are with with him now
In a safe place, free from harm
Cause you are with him now
In a peaceful place, out of pain
You with are with him now
In a safe place, free from harm
    ‘cause you are home
    You are home
    You are home

    I bought two. Why?
    a) Katie’s angelic voice (and heartfelt songwriting) on this video - fantastic product demo;
    b) Røde’s accompanying set-up video to this one; and
    c) the Røde corporate video tour showing their approach to and investment in manufacturing - all gave me the confidence to buy a pair of NTRs about 6 months ago to add to the collection.
Normal chain is NTR, ISA 2 or Manley, Studio 192, DAW. While the ISA 2 & Manley pre’s add nice transformer or tube warmth, different, but equally impressive results happen when the NTRs go right into the onboard mic preamps of the Presonus Studio 192 interface. For fun, I even tried it on my Zoom H4n. So... on my gear, the NTR sounds amazing. Applications: voice over for online course content, vocals, steel & nylon acoustic guitars, and in front of a Marshall TSL 112 combo... all sound so good. Nice job Røde!

Really great! Finally some "all-ribbon" recordings (so many people combine condensers and ribbons and that's usually a disaster for the ribbons in the final mix).
I'd love to hear her with the mic in more a sweet-spot where she doesn't face away from it every time she looks down at the keyboard but, the recording does a great job of showing the natural "tactile" and "lifelike" qualities of ribbon recording.
I find that ribbons also retain the 'shape' of sounds, they just have more expression then other mics which seem to flatten out the true dynamics as they occur in real-life (maybe something to do with the figure of eight pattern too?)

I would say because she's primarily not singing directly into the microphone and her lighter vocal tone would help reduce any air from plosives. It also appears the mic seems to be covered by a mesh shield, perhaps similar to something seen on with the new shield that launched with the NT1 (2014). Either way it seems like a very exciting microphone.

JMG Studios Hey, thanks for your reply. I was also thinking it must be because the mic is not pointed right at her BUT the vocal still sounds a little sibilant to me.

Josh Haslam I can see what you mean. Perhaps is had something to do with the mastering? Then again, this isn't really the ideal situation for a studio recording either. Either way, Im still pretty excited for this mic. :)

Can somebody please transcribe the lyrics, they're nowhere to be found, as is the song. Maybe under a different name?

      Home
      Katie Noonan 2015
I looked out across the bay and thought of you and your smile
Looking out at your home town and wishing I could hold you
I remember standing round the kitchen, Corona Street
Sneaking treats from your apron, and calling me your ‘Darl’
Then the rain started to fall, and it seemed to fit, my confusion
But soon the suns rays made the sky sing
Cause you are with him now, in a better place, out of pain
You are with him now, in a safe place free from harm
      You are home
The sun was loud and mighty not a rainbow to be seen
It felt like you were saying goodbye and letting me know you were fine
Cause I’m not going to focus on the fading end
But on the life that shone bright throughout
It was huge just like the love you had to give
So proud, giving until the end
Cause you are with him now, in a better place, out of pain
You are with him now, in a safe place free from harm
Cause you are with him now, in a peaceful place, out of pain
You are with him now, in a safe place free from harm
      Cause you are home
      You are home

    Micrófono selectivo
    Sonido seco y sensible
Como el trazo de un estilógrafo.
