Joma’s advice is gold. Pursue your passion WHEN you’re financially stable. Otherwise, you’ll be making decisions based on your emotions and you’ll eventually get exhausted. It’s so refreshing to hear after listening to all these gurus telling you to drop everything and pursue your passion and 99% of the people end up becoming broke. Work smart instead! Loved the collab!

I agree with him. I had this conversation at the gym 3-4 weeks ago with my friend that if I want to date freely and do the things I want, I need to not base it off my financial situation. Whenever I went on dates I count how much I can spend and it became stressful. Everyone has a different goal for financial stability but being able to reach it soon is different. Some people do get lucky and some (like me) don't.

What's a good amount for that in NYC? I'm thinking $1-2 MM is the point where you won't need work to pay your bills and stuff. But $300k-500k is also a lot to lean back on.

I feel like asian parents play a big role guiding our passions and career choice… being mentally and emotionally strong enough to challenge or carry that out is a feat in itself. Here’s to everyone finding and pursuing their true passions in 2022! 🥂🎊🎉💸💸💸

Wish my parents were like that. A lot of Western parents are too careless then expect their adult children to suddenly value hard work, stability, and education.

Joma's story is so relatable! Having your "typical" Asian parents growing up and engraining that kind of mentality into our upbringing is so true. The more "independent" you get in life with a good career and everything, the more relaxed they seem to become. All they want is for their kids to be well off, and most of the time the path they know is the traditional go to school and get a good job. Also with love vs. money, the older I get and the more I experience, it's not really about the endgame wealth, or the prestigious job, but more about the fire and drive for thigns in life. Given that trait, yes one may not make it on attempt 1, 2, or 3, but you just need 1 to hit and you're gold.

As a viewer who watches J Bro & Joma’s content on regular uploads, this is such a great collab please invite him over for more talks! It’s really refreshing to see this serious side of Joma instead of the funny awkward guy he is on his channel hahaha. His advices are really solid & insightful and the synergy between J Bros & Joma is really just *chef’s kiss*.
@Joma please invite them over to your channel as well - perhaps Joma in NYC or 6 Strangers. Would really love to see it 🤍
Huge respect to all 3 of y’all i’ve seen the growth from when John left his old work place & talked about opening his own dentist clinic, Jason chasing his masters as well as Joma who started his two new channels - Joma in NYC & 6 Strangers alongside with growing his main channel - Joma Tech. It’s amazing to see how far y’all have come. Keep it up! ♡

It's a healthy mix of relationship and career which is somewhat different from the exclusive focus on relationship and intimacy stuff with female guests in earlier episodes. I agree with Joma and John that women can more overlook the physical. No matter how long the other party has been pursing them for, women don't often "settle" for someone they have no emotional connection or interest in. Instead, "settling for a backup" is a mindset more prevalent among men.

I 💯 agree with Joma. Gotta start watching his videos now. I'm in the situation rn where I prioritize love and passion than money, As for me it is harder to find and as long as you're not lazy, money could be everywhere. Inner happiness is more important than money. I can't spend the whole day with 💩 job or environment with toxic people, that time is hard to pass. I would rather accept min. pay, if I'm happy, less stressed, passionate and with good company/environment, that would make time faster cos im enjoying and be excited for the following day.
새해 복 많이 받으세요. Kudos to each one of you, may you have all your dreams come to life. 💚 화이팅! 👊🏻Aja! Till your next video. 😍🤗👏🏻

Really needed this eye opener. Right now I’m struggling to choose between staying at my current company job working 12 hrs 7 days a week or go into the beauty industry after I’m done with my schooling. Currently going for my cosmetology license I won’t be done till the end of December 2022. I still have along way to go but its something that always crosses my mind. I know it’s going to be a struggle already if I quit my job right after graduation, but its a challenge I’m willing to take to purse my passion since getting my cosmetology license isn’t easy, while working full time and being an evening student part time.

  • @melp3736
    @melp3736 2 роки тому +6

Thanks for the interesting video! I have an alternate/additional(?) perspective about money vs passion that I'd like to share!
I don't think the "Once becoming financially stable (aka get rich quick), you are more likely to become successful/find meaning in doing something you enjoy by following your passions, even if unconventional (e.g. UA-cam or an artist)" mentality is generalisable, and perhaps you agree, but this is UA-cam so there are some who might take it at face value and so here is my take. I think this mentality is applicable to a specific subset of those who share a core trait of self-discipline and have already demonstrated this in society by way of a previous or current job that has brought about financial stability.
I think there should be an emphasis on self-discipline, or good work ethic, as a trait that underpins the above mentality. Though I guess it goes without saying!
To illustrate my point with an example, let's consider a person with an unhealthy habit that is possibly as a consequence of a lack of self-discipline - gaming addictions, subpar spending habits, procrastination or disorganisation to the point of being significant enough in your life to be counterproductive to your ambitions. Such a person, regardless of how little or how much money they earn or have, will still struggle with these habits if they do not resolve the underlying problem or have self-discipline. At face value, getting rich quick or becoming financially stable enough to not only pursue your passions but do it successfully cannot first be achieved without this core trait. And fair enough, there may be reasons for the emergence of these unhealthy habits because life and suffering gets in the way. I think we need to be careful when encouraging the pursuit of a passion without giving more credit to the hardworking, aim-for-higher mindset that has been so instilled in us particularly by our immigrant parents (although I'm not saying their ways of upbringing are always right).
Tldr; Before money, or passion, one needs to build skills of responsibility and self-discipline which translates to a good work ethic. Because without these traits as a foundation, money will not take you anywhere, and passion will not manifest into something meaningful. Life is hard, pursue your passions with determination and hard work! Thanks for hearing my thoughts☺️

There's this guy that has been chasing me for 10 years now (I know, it's a long time) and this whole time we've just been friends though I know that he really likes me and he's told me that, but has also respected my decision on not wanting to be more than friends with him. I recently started to reflect on many things and had just that thought: "well he's caring, loyal, hard worker, super nice and so many many qualities, why don't I just try?", and It sounds kinda harsh to say it's like my last resort or like second option or even "settling", and I suddenly had that thought and after thinking about it I realized no, it's not settling, I think I have actually started to have feelings towards him, so I agree with Joma, it's more like I started to develop feelings for him because I have to be honest, I was never attracted to him physically but it's his personality, mindset, and all those things that weigh more than his physical appearance. And it's actually been 12 years of chasing me, I was 13 when I met him and he told me he liked me, and he was 21, now I'm 25 and he's 33 (we met at church btw). He says he loves me, and if it's not with me than it's no one and says it in a very calm and confident voice 😅. And I don't think it's an obsession because he's never had any weird obsessive behavior and never forced me to do or say anything, we always just hang out and talk about all sorts of things. Anyway, it's just something I'm going through these days, thinking if we should date or just continue as really good friends because I can imagine myself with him but at the same time so scared of making the wrong decision since I don't like taking risks I'm always analyzing EVERYTHING! 😅. And yet I'm also just ok with just waiting and see what God has for me. And if it's this guy he has for me then I guess I'll know eventually, cause I don't know "how" you "know".😅🤷🏻‍♀️

@@linayr8 yeah haha, I know it sounds weird but we started to get to know each other even better by the age of 14 or 15 and have been friends since (he's always looked way younger than his age, even now at 34 he looks like 27) Asian features I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

It must be nice knowing that you have a passion and actually excelling in it. I would definitely choose security over anything even if I did happen to find my passion. I feel like once I make what I find interesting to do my main job, I'll start to like it less because it became my main job.
