This is one of the best reviews I've seen so far, with the right amount of relevant detail. My old NU25 weighs 37g on my scale with a DIY strap setup, so when I learned the weight difference I immediately tuned out to reviews on it. By watching your review, however, I can see the additional benefit of battery life, which wasn't an important factor to me because i try and use the red light only, even when night hiking.
Simply going to USB-C and the new battery meter would have possibly made me get the newer version but I don't like any of the other changes. I really like the warm flood light as well as the ultra low light settings on both the red and white light which was removed on the gen 2. Ill be sticking to my original gen1 NU25 and hope nitecore goes back to the drawing board before it quits on me!
I think that is where I would land if I didn't have a use for a second one (car bag). The old one is rock solid and I don't really see a need for the upgrade if it is still working fine. Good to see your name come across on the ol You Tubes again. I hope all is well with you! Have a Merry Christmas!
I really like the new one. It's better in so many ways. I didn't have the problem with the charging port cover. Probably that piece of rubber on yours didn't come out of the mold all that well.
Thanks Mark. I have the original one and love it. Been thinking about getting the new one but I'm not now. After seeing two or three reviews I won't get one until the old one dies on me or the battery really goes bad. I've had the old one for probably 5 years or longer and the battery life is still good enough.
Right on. The battery life for the new one is impressive and would make a great upgrade for night hikers and hunters, who spend a bit more time in the dark. 🤙
Nice first look Mark! Every first look I've seen is saying something similar. Not a must have and not enough changed for the better to spring for the new one. Also, half an ounce doesn't sound like a lot but if you can get away with it you might as well save the weight.
Since the days are shorter and night hiking is more of a possibility, especially if something goes wrong and you need to bail on a trip, which would be better? carrying a 2nd rechargable headlamp or a spare set of batteries for a non-rechargable headset?
I am a huge fan of rechargeable headlamps. The NU25 can run while being charged too; so if you have a battery bank with you then that is an option. I have done that once with my Gen 1 NU 25 because I was an idiot and forgot to charge it before my trip. I think a huge perk to the new NU25 is the crazy long run time. Hopefully you wouldn't even have to worry about the recharge while in the middle of a situation.
@@MarkGoesHiking That is a plus being able to be used while charging. I assumed that you would need to switch headsets while one was charging. Thank fully I have not needed to replace batteries while on a trip but I either have a spare headlamp or an extra set of batteries with me just in case.
Great Review Mark ,Thank You For Letting Us Know How These Headlamps Work.
Thanks mark - this is such a popular headlamp, great to know how this one changes it up!

Battery life is a good improvement in itself. Good work Mark!
Thanks Tim!
Thanks for this review. I've been eyeballing one of these but I don't really need it cause my original nu25 is still kicking strong.

@@MarkGoesHiking nice then I'll hold on to my old one for awhile. Yeah I'm still out here 😆 Merry Christmas to you and your family!

very best reviews....\
good job
The battery indicator is enough to encourage me. Nothing worse than just randomly running out of juice.
That feature is awesome 🤙
