- Today we finally tear into my jam packed backpack full of snacks, supplies, and everything I could ever need to survive the feat that is nursing school. Hope this gives you some ideas of what to add to your bag or maybe some things to buy others in you life who are on that school grind. I would love more nursing content! Maybe like study routines, a day in the life, etc. I’m a direct entry masters nursing student in my final semester :) I’ll be working in the endoscopy lab after graduation and then I start a FNP program next spring! I’ve been a nurse for over 15 years. I Had no idea what specialty I wanted to go into until the last half of my last semester. I initially thought I wanted to do peds or labor & delivery when I first started nursing school. I ended up doing post operative cardiac surgery after an amazing clinical experience in the cardiac surgical icu. Nursing is so awesome in the vast array of sub specialties that there are. There is a niche for everyone and sometimes you have to be patient until it reveals itself to you.

My mom was convinced she would hate peds (my sisters and I were pretty young when she started and I think she just figured she was over being around kids all day). But turns out she loved it after her clinical rotation. A great clinical experience can be life changing!
As a pre-nursing student, I'd say a good planner that works for you is essential. I also like to keep a small notebook for quick things I need to write down.

Tip for anyone that doesn’t like starting a blank page: get a notebook/pen combo that has a little bit of ghosting. Ghosting is where you can see the ink through the page a little bit but it’s not like bleeding through. It looks a little messy, but it helps me not freak out when I see a blank page lol. It’s actually helped me like studying a bit more because I feel like I’ve gotten more done.
I've been working as a support worker for many years and I've considered going into Nursing multiple times in the past. But since I discovered your channel recently you're seriously inspiring me so much for take the leap and go for it! Best of luck with your Nursing career :)

I love ur nursing scul videos! I'm in nursing scul too, currently on my 2nd yr. Unfortunately, we can't have face to face classes yet but we practice our clinicals through online one-on-one calls with our clinical instructors. My family has been rooting for me to go to med scul but I've been thinking a lot about continuing a nursing career and maybe specializing in the pediatrics.

Hi Kiara! Super cute video! I recently started as a nurse in an IV therapy clinic, I purchased some “easy” tourniquets from Amazon for less than $10! I never got the hang of tying a tourniquet with the one included in IV start kits 😭. They also hurt a lot less for the patient which is always a plus! Best of luck in your 3rd semester 💕

I'm a PA student so I have several of the same things, but my favorite thing is probably my suture kit, I have down time on this rotation and if I don't feel up for studying I can pull it out and practice sutures!

Not in nursing school, but I come from a lot of Drs and Nurses (including my bro and mom)! Anyways my favorite thing in my backpack is my “personalized first aid kit” which consists of things that I could need in the drop of a hat. Wrist brace, aleve, excedrin, contact drops, caps stick, etc…. And also the snacks that I always have.

I'm not in nursing school but my favourite thing I have in my backpack is probably similar to some nurses - it's my hand cream!! I'm studying a research masters in reproductive biology so I'm in and out the lab all day, constantly washing my hands and wearing gloves - maintaining my hands moisture barrier is such a struggle lol
NG Tubes are hard. Nobody likes doing them. My dad has had them when in the emergency room so many times. But, the last time was a disaster and caused trauma to his nose. It was horrible. I am so glad we have new nurses coming up in the ranks who are going to keep our loved ones in excellent care! It’s made me very humble being in college to be a paramedic. When you get a chance can you show us how you organize your medical notes on notability?

I am not in nursing school but I have a medical disability so my purse is a ready-go emergency bag lol. If anyone needs anything they always ask me because I am essentially a walking pharmacy at this point (I also have Advil stashed everywhere). My favorite thing that I have on my backpack is my "medical alert, medical equipment inside" keychain that I just got so if anything happens to me it's clear that there is medicine/supplies in my bag!

Love seeing your nursing content, it’s like full circle because I used to watch your videos as study breaks when I was in nursing school down in FL a couple years ago! I’m a NICU nurse now at Yale (feel free to reach out if you want to chat NICU RN things!) and I actually just interviewed for a masters of science in nursing education program! Goal is to do part time NICU part time adjunct professor!

Wow that's a lot of stuff 😂 I'm a Dutch nursing student and have like half of your stuff in my bag. We for once don't need our own stethoscope etc.
Its funny to see what bands you use before putting an iv in. Here in the Netherlands we use one that clicks then pull and it's nice and tight, it's like 2 sec work without any practice 😊
Whats the workload of studying for you? I feel like the workload for college is way less here than in the US

In Germany our touniquets are much more easy to use, they have a plastic clasp and you tighten them just by pulling on the elastic, maybe you could find some of those on the Internet if you are interested - I also think they might be more comfortable for the patient because the elastic is thicker and it’s more of a fabricy kind of strap than pure rubber
wait that's so cool! Another problem with American healthcare...never enough money in the budget for what's best for the patient 😂

not in nursing school, recently graduatedand doing a grad program (currently doing Perioperative). I don't know how things work in the states but in Australia it's really common for new nurses to do a grad program and they are more structured and assist in transitioning to working.
It is here too! I hope to get accepted into one!
RN in Sweden with 3 years experience in cardio-thoracic/vascular surgery and NICU. Since august I’m back in school for my specialty; midwifery. L&D and woman’s healthcare is VERY different here in comprehension to the US. As a midwife I have the exclusive responsibility for normal pregnancy and birth, with doctors near by when needed. It’s so much fun and in January 2023 I’m graduating after a total of 4,5 years of studying (with 3 years of working in between degrees).
What’s the view on multi resistant bacteria and staff hygiene in USA? Your guidelines are so much different then ours and I’m curious to know how you think about it as a student?
In Sweden you change clothes provided by the hospital when coming there. Always short sleeved tops, hair up, no nail polish or acrylic nails etc, no watches or jewelry. Clothes go to wash at hospital after ended shift. Use of gloves only if risk for contact with body fluids and always single use-apron in thin plastic in contact with patients. This is so interesting since (as I understand) staff in North America use gloves a lot and the use of accessories and clothes differ very much. So, what’s your thoughts about all of this? Do you (as students, not individual persons) reflect about this stuff or is just normalized?

This is my first semester in nursing school, but I’m year round so it’s a little less of a workload which is nice (still hard though)! I go to UW Oshkosh and as of right now I want to do hospice nursing. I love old people and want to give them the best quality of care they deserve 🤍 I honestly would love some tips for studying though, because I’m struggling and it’s only the beginning :( also what shoes do you like to wear for clinical?
Omg you are AMAZING. Hospice nurses change lives and I think impact families more than any other specialty! I will for sure share some more study tips and I love my cloves or snibbs for nursing shoes!

Hi I recently found out I got on the alternative list/ waitlist and I will find out by August 1st if I get into the program or not. Just wondering how that experience was for you I know you got waitlisted from a previous one of your videos . Last year at my school there were 10 people on the waitlist. How was your experience?
Do you have to take your textbooks to every class? Are they heavy? I start my 2 year nursing program in the fall and I’m super excited but nervous 😩
"For some reason I'm always in pain" * laughs in chronic pain * I carry more variety of meds than you and bandaids of course. Gotta have the usual chapstick and a backup one that definitely never leaves the bag because how can you focus when you have crunchy dry lips 😅
Can I just say I love that you carry so much stuff and even backups because that was always me in school. Even in highschool some friends called me Office Depot because I always had enough pens and supplies. As far as pencils though 🤔 I think math was the last time I used pencils. All my notes were always in pen. And I switched from my laptop to an iPad mini in grad school because it was so much lighter to carry on my commute. A backup battery is a must for me.
I take my Apple Watch to work with me and I actually am able to pin my watch on my uniform. loving the content, good luck with the rest of your classes :)

Did any one influence on your style? Like a filmmaker? Example: I was influenced by Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Wells

Re: your deodorant -- I am the same! I used to forget deodorant in the mornings before work as well. I ended up just buying a mini deodorant and toothbrush for my desk at work. Came in handy several times 😂
