Roy required prescription glasses and once forgot them. He happened to have his prescription sun glasses and it went over so well he kept on wearing them when he performed. He was known as the "Caruso" of rock n' roll - (Enrique Caruso was a famous opera singer from the '30s. I remember when all these songs came out, when they were brand new and they really effected me deeply. Such an magnificent voice there never was.
This song *It's over" has been voted the greatest heartbreak song ever recorded. I mean the lines "All the rainbows in the sky Start to weep, then say goodbye, You wont be seeing rainbows anymore". Total despiar, desolation and heartache. Roy sang for the lonely and the heart broken for sure. A one off. No-one before or since. and that voice!!. For me the Greatest. I loved your reaction ...Roy knew about his voice.. he said on record that his voice "was a gift from God" Jeff Lynne of ELO said to Roy that he was great and was responsible for resurrecting his career as part of the Travelling Wilbury's". When it was Roy's turn to record his part or solo for the Travelling Wilbury's each member of the group Bob Dylan, George Harrison Tom Petty would stop what they were doing and just listen to Roy. Pretty sure that's a sign your great.
I think that Roy is singing from the perspective of a personal experience that everyone can understand--that moment when you know 'It's over.' The singer is experiencing the moment in his life as he as he tells a story we all can relate to.
I have been to one of my grandsons graduations and just got home, so I missed the release of your reactions. I grew up in the late 50s and early 60s and was a huge Roy Orbison fan. Roy didn't have his first hit song until the release of "Only The Lonley" in 1960. Roy wrote the song and tried to get Elvis and the Everly Brothers to release the song. When no one else would release the song, he went into a recording studio and recorded his own version, which instantly became a hit. After that, Roy would write songs tailored to his own voice and said later in an interview that he liked the sound of his voice. It is remarkable to me that Roy Orbison couldn't see his own incredible talent until everyone refused to cover the music that he wrote, which forced him to make his first recording and change history. I love your reaction and how both of you can identify and appreciate rare and unique talent. Roy Orbison did have vision problems, and he was very far sighted, which made his glasses magnify his eyes. He wore the dark glasses as a way to hide that.
Like his father, Roy Orbison required heavy lens prescription glasses from the time he was a young child. Orbison's trademark sunglasses were a fashion statement arising from an incident early in his career. Orbison had left his regular glasses in an airplane. Due to go on stage in a few minutes and unable to see without corrective lenses, his only other pair of glasses were dark prescription sunglasses. "I had to see to get on stage," so he wore the glasses throughout his tour of England with the Beatles in 1963, and he continued the practice for the remainder of his professional career. "I'll just do this and look cool." However, Orbison also said in an interview that he wore his glasses on a plane because the sun was bright and forgot he was wearing them, especially while on stage. Shortly after he finished performing, he looked in the mirror and noticed he had not taken his glasses off, so he laughed about it and continued to wear them for the rest of his career. To me, the first explanation is the more plausible!
A Black and White Night is simply one of the greatest tributes to Roy that can be watched..The amazing cast of musicians on stage with him backing this amazing man up. People who in their own right pack huge stadiums happy to just play their own part in the concert and looking on in amazement as Roy's beautiful voice sails effortlessly through so many hits. The whole show is now history for ll of us to sit and enjoy again and again. Roy Orbison in my personal opinion had one of the finest voices and range of any of the GREATS and was a REAL LEGEND. Roy would never boast of his amazing talent others can say that was his favourite quote when asked, so a humble beautiful soul and a true gift to the world.
Yes, what a night ! And only the great Roy Obison could have Bonnie Raitt, Jenifer Warnes and KD Lang as his back-up doo-wop singers .............what talent !
He certainly knew that his peers loved his voice. Like you said Elvis commented about how special his voice was. When towards the end of his career he became a member of The Traveling Wilburys, everyone else in that band were so happy to have him in the group. A very classy guy.
Elvis publicly stated that Roy Orbison had ' most perfect voice' and referred to him as the 'greatest singer in the world' during one of his Dec. 1976 Vegas concerts.
The entire "Black and White Night" concert is exceptional. The band and the back-up singers are all stars in their own right, and their participation was a tribute to Roy Orbison. Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther (co-wrote many Eagles songs), Steven Soles, K.D. Lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Rait. So much talent on that stage! It's a bit long, but I know you both will enjoy reviewing "Pretty Woman" from this concert.
Roy Orbison had bad eyes, and that's why the sunglasses were always on. RE Elvis: Roy Orbison loved him and wrote songs for him, but supposedly Elvis didn't want Roy to be on the same live shows as he knew Roy had the better voice. Roy could supposedly hit an octave range that few women could hit and close to no men. His sad songs come from a very sad place; his first wife who he married, divorced and then remarried, was killed in a motorcycle accident, and then two of his sons were killed in a house fire. So, when he sings the songs "In Dreams" and "Crying", that singing comes from that very sad place. I'm sure you've read about the rest of the wonderful performers playing for Roy in the Black and White Night concert; if I could've chosen one musical show to ever see, that would be the one. Enjoy it all, you beautiful couple.
I like older Roy's voice, but I LOVE young Roy's voice. His power shines through in his early recordings. I can 100% recommend Running Scared or In Dreams as examples of his ability to sing about tragedy with such beauty. I would recommend Del Shannon too for another awesome 1960s falsetto.

Besides his voice, one of the things about Roy Orbison is the way he wrote songs. Most songs then were written as verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, verse, chorus or something like that. But many of Roy Orbison's songs weren't like that at all, and this one is an example. There is a verse part, and he does come back to it ("Rainbows..."), but the song doesn't follow the usual, expected course ... and that makes the sudden climax at the end of this song so striking. "In Dreams" is another example: instead of verse, chorus, etc., it's Section 1, Section 2, Section 3, Section 4, etc., each one different, each one building (and if you sing it in the shower and you don't start on a fairly low note, you'll find yourself reaching the top of your range long before Roy does).
You have to listen to his A Love So Beautiful. It was written for him by Jeff Lynne around the time of the Wilburys and when he played it for him, Roy wept.
Roy Orbison had a tragic loss, through fire. I think he had a visual problem, but the dark glasses were also his signature, How many famous artists do you see here on this stage. K.D.Lang. Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Castello, Andrew gold, Jackson brown. J.D. Souther. to mention just a few.
Guys, y'all did it again to me 🥺. I've never had a reactor make me. Cry & be so happy , I love you 2. 🎶🎶🎶🎶💔💔Roy. Can. Make meso sad & so dam happy. 🎸🎸🥁💕💕
The live version of Pretty Women is also very nice at this concert. He also sang a nice new song that appeared on his 1988 album" Mystery Girl", "The Comedians". There were also hard rockers like Billy Idol in the audience at this show.
We all knew how great his voice was !! When analyzed his pitch is PERFECT, and he could sing almost 3 octaves !! Roy had sensitive eyes and stage lights bothered him.
Roy was doing a performance and when he arrived he noticed that he had forgotten his glasses. He used his prescription sunglasses that he happened to have and he had a favorable response and chose to wear them afterwards. He had very poor vision.
Waiting on that last It's over! It's his voice that appeals to be, not the meassage...but count how many songs mention lonely. Roy had a tragic life, losing his wife and two eldest sons in a fire in his home near Nashville while he was on tour in the UK.
Another favorite singer of Elvis Presley was singer Jackie Wilson. Jackie had one of the best voices around. Songs such as Baby Workout, Danny Boy and many others. Please check out Jackie Wilson ❤
One of the worst traits of human beings is self pity. D H Lawrence remarked that he had seen a small bird fall dead from its perch in the freezing cold with no sign of self pity. BUT Roy Orbison transcends the usual snivelling wah-wah stuff; there is a dignity & poetry in his songs of lost love, that, combined with his wonderful voice, lift it into art. Wonderful.
"Did he know how great he was?" No. Everyone else did but not him. He DID seem to have joh and happiness in his life, along with great sorrow. One thing that isn't obvious: his songs were SIMPLE. SIMPLISTIC. Simple guitar. Simple rhythm. And in a world of the American '60s, HIS songs were seldom covered / remade becasue NO ONE HAD THAT VOICE. NO ONE. His songs were almost sacrosanct. Ordained. Folks just didn't cover them live - it was almost blasphemy.
Roy Orbison - "LEAH" from The Black and White Night... "LEAH" from The Black and White Night Concert 1987! Written by Roy Orbison, "LEAH" tells the story of pearl diver who drowns going after a pearl for his girl Leah. Peace out.
Jim Reeves was man Nan’s favourite. I always think of her every time I hear him. Distant Drums always brings a tear to my eye as it was played at her funeral 💔
Roy required prescription glasses and once forgot them. He happened to have his prescription sun glasses and it went over so well he kept on wearing them when he performed. ...interesting info....thanks.
He was actually on tour with Beatles and left his regular glasses on the plane, so he had to wear his sunglasses.
Dominika, your face when Roy started to sing. Roy’s voice is like purple warm velvet. Plush, dark, and it goes right to your heart.
This song *It's over" has been voted the greatest heartbreak song ever recorded. I mean the lines "All the rainbows in the sky

RIP Roy. What a gift.
Roy Orbison combined vocals and great songs into unforgettable masterpieces.
In Dreams and Crying from this concert.
Simply iconic! Breaking up is so very hard to do! With each note your heart aches! ‘True that!’
I remember as a kid hearing Roy and liked him!

Love your reaction to Roy's fabulous voice.
Hello from Canada. I was a teen in the 70's. Best time ever. I feel sorry it came to an end.
Roy was a class act❤
He is the man in the relationship.😊
His wife was having a affair at the time.....but he didn't know
A HAUNTING SAD SORROWFUL TUNE.... CAN'T GET IT OUT OF MY MIND!

Although Roy Orbison had great success in his performances in his personal life there was a great deal of tragedy! RIP Roy Orbison 😢

This tune is gut wrenching 😢
You can find most of the songs performed in this show on UA-cam.
Love you both, such fabulous reactions! I can't hardly wait for the next one!
There is another great concert Roy did before he died called 'Austin City Limits' - I highly recommend you react to it !
Great genuine reaction
Let's not forget Roy has written most of his hit songs.
You have to listen to his A Love So Beautiful. It was written for him by Jeff Lynne around the time of the Wilburys and when he played it for him, Roy wept.
Roy was the greatest
Wonderful choice!
Roy Orbison had a tragic loss, through fire. I think he had a visual problem, but the dark glasses were also his signature, How many famous artists do you see here on this stage. K.D.Lang. Much love from both of us 💚
Running Scared is another great one
Have you listened to Roy Orbison singing Blue Bayou?
The live version of Pretty Women is also very nice at this concert. He also sang a nice new song that appeared on his 1988 album" Mystery Girl", "The Comedians". There were also hard rockers like Billy Idol in the audience at this show.
And that’s why The Travelling Wilburys insisted that they must have him !!!!
He’s singing in the third person about himself.
.......I have to put my hound dog outside, whenever Roy sings. lol
My go to Break Up Heart Break song.... Amazing 😎 ❤.
Roy could have chosen Opera but he chose Rock and we are all thankful for that
ROY HAD AN EYE IMPARMENT....HE WOULD WEAR SPECIAL LENSES....HIS SUNGLASSES BECAME HIS SIGNATURE LOOK !!
Wonderful reaction. Also from Black and White Night is Running Scared. It too had a rousing crescendo finish.
Possibly the best track from the Black and White concert was "Pretty Woman" I like "Crying" but now it always reminds me of "Only fools and Horses"
For a change of pace, try the Mamas and Papas, ‘No Salt on Her Tail’ and ‘12:30’. Both are rich in harmonies!
Love Dominka facial expressions. Her tatse is really similar to mine in songs
"Mystery Girl" by Roy Orbison, written by Bono from U2 is a banger - take a listen
Waiting on that last It's over! It's his voice that appeals to be, not the meassage...but count how many songs mention lonely. Roy had a tragic life, losing his wife and two eldest sons in a fire in his home near Nashville while he was on tour in the UK.
Dwight Yoakam said that Roy voice was that of an angel falling backward out an open window.
Another favorite singer of Elvis Presley was singer Jackie Wilson. Jackie had one of the best voices around. Songs such as Baby Workout, Danny Boy and many others. Please check out Jackie Wilson ❤
The Recording of this in his prime is vocally much stronger

Roy Orbison - "LEAH" from The Black and White Night...
"LEAH" from The Black and White Night Concert 1987! Written by Roy Orbison, "LEAH" tells the story of pearl diver who drowns going after a pearl for his girl Leah. Peace out.
Hi, we have reacted to Leah from Black and White Night. Please search in our video. Thank you 😊
@@MerchantOfAlba thank you I look it up. Peace out.
Listen to " a love so beautiful "
He wore glasses because he had eye issues. I heard his songs when they first came out...I was 17 at the time
Roy's glasses were very thick. He was almost blind without them. He has them tinted dark so people can't tell. They are not sun glasses
He was very humble. He always gave God credit for his voice and his talent. He never made a big deal about himself everyone else did.
Amazing voice.
You guys should also check out Jim Reeves
Jim Reeves was man Nan’s favourite. I always think of her every time I hear him. Distant Drums always brings a tear to my eye as it was played at her funeral 💔
@@colinstevens2691 I've just bought the Rose 'Distant Drums' named after Jim Reeves.
Roy had terrible eye problems.
He needed to wear the glasses.
I think thew reason for the " sunglasses is he's blind !
React to Elvis Presley's "It's over" but it is not the same song as Orbison's.
He wore glasses as he had really bad eyesight and his eyes were very sensitive to light!!!
Roy's wife was having a affair at the time....he had no idea
listen to Danny Boy.
Great reaction as always. You should check out California Blue by Roy. It’s one of my favourites 😊
