Yes Ulf - they went a bit wrong after this epic lp. I saw them live about 6/7 years ago and they only played the old stuff and, of course, it was great.
From what I've heard, this was originally intended to be OMD's last song. They got together at the last day of the recording of Architecture and Morality and wrote and recorded it, supposedly to never be in a recording studio together ever again. They thought they'd done everything they wanted to do with music at that point, and that it wasn't commercially enough, so they were going to give up. But then A&M blew up, and the rest is history
Simply a perfect song -- sublime in its melancholy and beauty -- off of a near-perfect album, and one of my favorite synth pop albums (and bands) of all-time. This music is timeless.
For me this raises an image of a slow and winding boat trip in thick thick fog. . . . . one from which I never want to come back. Thank you OMD for the great music.
i never really interpreted this song like this, i've always thought of a lonely highway, driving off into the sunset. But everyone has a different vision of this song... I think you're absolutely right about this song being underrated, this is the most beautiful OMD song ever, it should of been on their 'best of' cd in 1988, but it wasn't.
walked into a record store and bought this cassette on a whim. around 83-84.I was maybe 13 myself. I had never heard anything like it in my life and it shaped my musical taste from then on. Its almost industrial before industrial
Most true artist never get the recognition for being innovative and creating beauty so original that it can confuse a mass audience upon its release. DAZZLE SHIPS in my opinion is perhaps one of the most important recordings of the 20th century. And this song alone sheds some light of the personal openness an artist must reveal and express to unleash beauty. thank you for making and posting this vid !!!!
YESSS!!! I have considered Dazzle Ships a masterpiece for over 25 years!! I just knew it would eventually break out and take it's rightful place as one of the best of the best of all time.
So proud to be the 1000th person to love this song. This is in my top 5 - up there with Electricity, Messages and Souvenir; not forgetting Red Frame, White Light!
ho appena scoperto questa canzone meravigliosa. Sto assaporando questo momento, con la delicata tristezza che questa musica porta con sé. Ho i brividi.
How can I express this feeling! Each beat makes me feel apart from this world...Romantic, dramatic, hypnotic but also fantastic... Thanks OMD... Please come back soon:Liverpool 20th June & your new album: ????
this track haunts me. this -above all others - was the background music to the sad split with g/friend. strange how after all these years it triggers memories sad and happy at the same time. a well-put together vid. thanks and cheers.
this has always reminded me of Arcade Fire. you can hear that direct influence in the pop/indie scene of the early to late 2000s. Suburbs especially. OMD's influence lives on through thousands of artists. so damn good
Funny how these old songs turn up in movies or TV shows and the youngsters hear them for the 1st time and think they are new. Me I'm an old fucker so I never heard of RED OAKS, is it any good. I got this record in 1983 still have it glad young kids can hear it now,
it is a song such as this by omd which makes music sound as good as it is by one of the groups who gave all they had to make records people always liked listening to.
Is this a piece that attracts melancholy and reminiscence, or do melancholy and memory attract it? Dec. 17, 2020. My mom in palliative on the threshold of her passage while I sit by her side and reflect on all the things we've done in 82 years.
One of my Absolute favorite OMD songs ...certainly my favorite b-side from them, from an amazing single...I always thought Thirty Three by the Smashing Pumpkins borrowed a similar vibe to this song..both gorgeous songs..still play 'em side by side..
@@Beaches_south_of_L.A. actually, yes it is. It was originally one of the B-sides on Maid of Orleans 12 inch. About a year later it was included as an album track on Dazzle Ships, I guess even they realized it was too good to just be a forgotten B side.
Hey you lot who rave about 80s music bieng the best..its not the music that made the eighties its the memories of your teenagehood and being free to do what you wanted to do ..it was called growing up..this music was in the background so will always seem special...people who grew up in the 90s will be saying the same obout that music to..........ps...80s was the best though...by far.
One of the most haunting and melancholy songs of all time. Absolute perfection in it's simplicity. Timeless, ageless gold.
Been my favourite band since 1980... love this song.
Fantastic song that I always think represent the end of the OMD era that I really love (the four first albums)
Yes Ulf - they went a bit wrong after this epic lp. I saw them live about 6/7 years ago and they only played the old stuff and, of course, it was great.

This reminds me of daydreaming as a child. I loved OMD ...always sent me into a trance and made me want to be a saint like Joan Of Arc x
Did it work? :)
The 4 who disliked this OBVIOUSLY have no taste in BEAUTIFUL music OR a VERY well made video.
ho appena scoperto questa canzone meravigliosa.
Sto assaporando questo momento, con la delicata tristezza che questa musica porta con sé.
Ho i brividi.
Love this song, OMD is amazing!
Fabulous song,
OK so it's July 2022 & I'm still listening to this classic track - has music that stirs the soul gone downhill since the 70s/80s?
Trains are so melancholic.
+Sofia M so always it is attractive
How can I express this feeling! Each beat makes me feel apart from this world...Romantic, dramatic, hypnotic but also fantastic... Thanks OMD... Please come back soon:Liverpool 20th June & your new album: ????

The longing for love is what keeps us going

One of the rare and best songs from OMD !
this has always reminded me of Arcade Fire. you can hear that direct influence in the pop/indie scene of the early to late 2000s. Suburbs especially. OMD's influence lives on through thousands of artists. so damn good
The sublimation of grace.
They had seven Top 10 hits here in the UK all spending 10-15 weeks in the charts.
This track is utterly gorgeous track. too bad it's not a longer one.
:)
found this song in the AMAZON TV show 'RED OAKS'. it promptly lights me. a very good song!
Bin Wang same bro. heard it on red oaks and I was hooked

einer der geilsten songs von ihrem vielleicht geilsten album
got the album in 1983 lovely
I despise the shit they call music today, this is on the other hand, is awesome
This music is perfect for night ridin' with the windows down ....just chillin'.......
it is a song such as this by omd which makes music sound as good as it is by one of the groups who gave all they had to make records people always liked listening to.
This song was also an added bonus on the remastered version of Architecture & Morality. Great song.

@20cFilmWannabe
Humphreys and McCluskey were big fans of JD, they even wrote a song for Ian (Statues).
Greate song especially in today's day...............
Mój jeden z ulubionych :-)
I love this song, the instrumental part remins me of something more modern - perhaps a pre-Final Straw Snow Patrol track?
magnifique chanson !!!
This song is great and was just a B-side of the Maid of Orleans single. Hopefully they haven't forgotten it while recording Dazzle Ships

Probably one of the earliest influence of dream pop genre.

Spectacular video, Dude!

'Romance of the Telescope' was also initially used as a B-side taken from the 'Architecture and Morality' recording sessions.

This would have been a perfect song to use for the closing credits of a 80s John Hughes flick.
I'm here cause of Half Light I.... this is great.

Sounds like my neighbour banging his fencepost in the ground , good melody though
