    Thanks for the explanation of the mesh. It gives a good reference point to know if a bat is worth repairing. With the one I have, the outer mesh is already become kind of wavey and is also protruding outside. From your explanation, it will never form that charged field which means I might as well just throw it.

    About the dielectric , have you tried toothpicks? Just use a larger air space between the meshes

    • @INSIDEELECTRONICS
      @INSIDEELECTRONICS  4 роки тому

      Nope, I haven't tried with tooth picks. But I've tried with larger separation between the mesh but all that is going to happen is it it is going to find another route to ground. Make it too large and the bat becomes useless.

    what is the optimal battery reading for a new battery? And can you replace the rechargeable ones with brand new aa batteries in series?

    • @INSIDEELECTRONICS
      @INSIDEELECTRONICS  4 роки тому

      Voltage level of a new battery can be anywhere between 3 to 4 volts. It depends on how long it came out of production. And yes you can connect two AA cells in series but make sure to adjust the capacitor value to decrease the charging current.

    Can you please tell me how to check capacitor properly ?
    When I check charging out put getting 180-220 volt I got surprised (shocked)

    • @INSIDEELECTRONICS
      @INSIDEELECTRONICS  3 роки тому +1

      If you are getting around full mains voltage at the charger side, chances are the battery is open. These capacitive dropper rectifiers depends on the load itself to maintain the required voltage, unless clamped by any zener diodes. So if the load fails, the voltage will climb back to the full peak voltage. Checking the capacitor properly requires a meter that can read capacitance. Otherwise all you can do is to use the continuity test. Put the multimeter in continuity mode and touch both the terminals of the capacitor. You may hear a beep for a few seconds and then the resistance will climb until the meter reads OL or something similar. That means the capacitor is okay. If you continue to hear the beep in full volume for a long time the capacitor is shorted. If the meter just reads OL instantly when connected to the capacitor, then its open. But these tests won't show how far the capacity has dropped due to being put to use. If the capacitor has leakage or has lost its rated capacity, it may still pass the continuity test but will perform poorly in circuit. So better test it with an LCR meter if possible. Thanks for your valuable feedback though. :)

    very patiently and well explained.. I have four bats which I believe the battery is mostly fine and i need to get a replacement capacitor. Could you kindly suggest any capacitor which would probably fit all of them or rather any common name by which shopkeepers can understand my requirement and give it to me.. merely saying I need a high voltage capacitor of 2kV won't suffice I guess.. (I'm not a professional, just a DIY guy to be honest.)

    • @INSIDEELECTRONICS
      @INSIDEELECTRONICS  6 років тому

      +Soham Dutta Thank you so much for your valuable feedback. I believe you are talking about the final capacitor that is connected across the mesh terminals, if so the replacement capacitors are usually 470nf 1600V or 680nf 2000V. Basically the higher the capacitance value the larger the zap will be. But it will drain the battery faster. You can check for any markings on the capacitor and replace it with another of the same value. :)

    • @sohamdutta2007
      @sohamdutta2007 6 років тому

      +INSIDE ELECTRONICS! thanks. yes that's what i was referring to. I guess a better zap is the one to go for 😁. Well, Most don't have any value written on them. So will selecting 680nf 2kv serve it all? And are they actually commonly available in the market? and any idea what it's reasonable price should be approx?

    • @sohamdutta2007
      @sohamdutta2007 6 років тому

      +INSIDE ELECTRONICS! also how do you procure lead acid cells if they are dead or weak? is it rather better to abandon it in that case?

    • @INSIDEELECTRONICS
      @INSIDEELECTRONICS  6 років тому

      +Soham Dutta Well it depends on which lead acid batteries are you referring to. If its regarding those found inside these mosquito rackets, its better to discard it. But the bigger higher capacity cells can actually be brought back to life. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of electrolyte. You can search on UA-cam for how to do it. :)

    • @INSIDEELECTRONICS
      @INSIDEELECTRONICS  6 років тому

      +Soham Dutta Sometimes it has some markings in it. If it hasn't any, then it's safe to go with the above cap. :) The price for those are actually cheap. Its like 10 Rs for a pair I think. But sometimes it gets cheaper.

    The circuit used for reducing 220 to a lower voltage is a transformerless circuit using a big mylar cap coupled with a computed resistor. When any of these is damaged the output voltage going to the battery is also unpredictable, or most likely, very high. This destroys the battery in a very short time. Usually, the cap/resistor tandem is for small current only. If the circuit is forced to give a higher current, the cap/resistor tandem collapses, and the battery will eventually die also.
    To be practical, DO NOT SWITCH ON when charging. The power will also come from the cap/resistor and battery at the same time. This forces a high current through the cap/resistor.
    The other parts may or may not be affected, but the bat does not work anymore because the battery is busted, about 98 percent of the time, the battery is busted.
    I've used / destroyed a lot of these gadgets. Now, I'm using one in my outdoor kitchen. I don't need to charge or replace the battery anymore. I swing it around like a badminton/tennis racket and I'm sure I really hit a lot of those flying critters.

Of course I would lose the the AC recharging but I do have mutliple 18650 and a reliable xtar charger. I was planning to use an LM317T but I found out that the min Vin - Vout = 3.0v but these are typically powered by 2.4v nicd. and that's just a 1.3v difference, way below the the minimum voltage drop. Instead of trying to charge the li ion battery with AC power, you can remove the NiCad charger circuit from the board completely and use a cheap Chinese battery protection board. These are available in eBay for as little as 1 dollar for a pair. You can then charge the battery using any USB power supply. That will be the more economical also.

    • @INSIDEELECTRONICS

      So you want to check whether the transistors are good or not? If so, using a multimeter in diode mode, measure across the base-emitter and base- collector pins, with the +ve probe connected to the base, you will get a reading of around 0.6V if it is a good one. In a TO126 package, pin 1 is the emitter, 2-collector, and 3 is base.

    • @INSIDEELECTRONICS
      @INSIDEELECTRONICS  Рік тому +1

      Most good silicon transistors will show around 0.6V only. So that is quite normal. But, if you were asking about the maximum operating voltage of d882, then it is 40V. Regarding the neon bulb method, yes it can be used to test the transformer and transistor at the same time. All you need to do is connect a neon bulb at the output pins of the board, where the metal mesh is connected to the board. Now when the bat is on, the neon should light up if everything is working fine. In your case, the issue could be a faulty battery or a faulty high voltage capacitor. If any of these is bad, the bat will work, but there will not be sufficient power to make the spark to kill the mosquitos.

      @INSIDEELECTRONICS  Рік тому +1

      Please note that we cannot measure the output voltage of this transformer directly with a normal averaging multimeter. You need a high voltage probe and also a true RMS multimeter. If the transistor is getting hot, that indicates a possible short at the transformer. Remove it and check the windings. Else the transistor will be damaged. You can get a neon bulb from old mains indicators or an old mains tester screwdriver. Have a good day.😊👍🏼

    One question, how the circuit converts 220 volt AC into approx. 3volt DC to charge the battery without using transformer?

    • @INSIDEELECTRONICS
      @INSIDEELECTRONICS  6 років тому

      Its because they are using a capacitor in series to the bridge rectifier. That way the capacitor acts like a resistor (and the property is called reactance) which will reduce the voltage to whatever we desired (here 220v to 4v), but without much wastage as if a resistor was used. It's a very common and cheap way to convert AC to DC. But the main problem with this type of capacitive "series dropper" circuit is the risk of electric shock. Since there is no isolation between AC side and DC side. Also the voltage will shoot up to full 300 volts (RMS value) if there is no load connected. So it is not safe.

    • @INSIDEELECTRONICS
      @INSIDEELECTRONICS  3 роки тому +2

      It is possible to convert it and I've personally tried it 3 or 4 times before. 😀 However I didn't recorded doing it because
      1. The entire bat becomes reference to AC mains and it might kill the user rather than the mosquitoes, if not used properly.
      2. The primary winding of the transformer and the switching transistor got damaged in all 4 bats within the first 20 minutes of use, no matter how many different resistor values I've tried. (sometimes the resistor itself burns before the transistor.)
      So I don't want to make a video about something that works only for just a few hours and also unsafe. 😬 Anyway I will still keep this as a to-do project. 👍

      Even though it is possible to do so, I don't recommend it. Because these boards do not usually have any sort of input protection. And it depends on the internal resistance of the lead acid/zinc chloride battery for the current limiting. So when you connect it to a power bank, there is a possibility for damaging the output section. Use it at your own risk.

    • @INSIDEELECTRONICS
      @INSIDEELECTRONICS  6 років тому +1

      For the transistor to get heated up that much, the obvious reason will be a short circuit. Now that the transistor itself has been smoked, you need to change it anyway as it may have shorted internally. After replacing the transistor, look for any short circuit using a multimeter and also check the resistors in the circuit as an open/shorted resistance can cause a higher current flow. You can get these parts for almost free if you search around in your local scrap yard as people often throw them away for no good reasons. :)

Inside the bat, make a 3.3V regulator with heat sink and connect the input to a micro USB port, which will connect to the car charger, and the output of the regulator to the points where the battery was connected. This is the cheapest way to do it.

      Yes you can. Buy any car USB charger and connect the input + and - pins of charger to the corresponding pins of the battery. Get an old USB cable and cut it open. Inside, find the + and - wires and solder this to the + and - points inside the bat. For added protection, connect a 1N4007 diode to the +ve wire of USB cable. That's it. :)
