  • I thought it would be interesting how does this cheap high voltage circuit work, so here it is! I was slightly confused by the wrong datasheet and with strange capacitor arrangement in the schematic, but I think I got it worked out - let me know if I was wrong in the comments! This cheap fly zapper is worth getting for the circuit alone I think, that's if you wish to get low power high voltage source. Oscillator is basically a Joule Thief, with third winding added on transformer for high voltage output and going through a voltage tripler - awesome simple! Enjoy!

    Wonderful explanation. Is there a possibillity to emproove this kind of fly swatter ? The flies often are only knocket out and awake after some minutes.

    Hi there...Excellent video, but despite the poor build quality the device works brilliantly, disposing of flies and small bugs instantly and stunning larger bugs and wasps... Poor build quality, yes.....but at one pound, fantastic value for money and certainly not a toy in my opinion...Loved the video..thank you..

    Sir , I need a way to modify EITHER , this type of zapper racket .. OR .. the big electrical - AC operated - one , to be operated continuously by DC 12V of solar system ... Is there any way to doing so , you - or any one else here knows - PLEASE explain it in a reply !!! ... thank you in advance .

    Excellent video.very nice explanation.I have one question,What will be the voltage across primary winding of the transformer during operation?

    • @randomtronic
      @randomtronic  6 років тому

      Primary was switched directly from supply voltage, in this case 3V.

    • @7760468484
      @7760468484 6 років тому +1

      randomtronic thank you for the reply.In many insect terminators I have seen in the market comes with rechargeable battery.But when I see the circuit it does not have step down transformer to convert 220volt AC to approx 3volt DC to charge the battery ,instead it has some resistor and capacitor and bridge rectifier.How it works?

    • @randomtronic
      @randomtronic  6 років тому

      Prakash Chandra hard to say without looking at it, but I suspect, that there will be a "capacitive dropper" - that's the mains rated cap, to limit the current from mains, the bridge rectifier to convert it to DC, and then a resistor voltage divider to get appropriate voltage to charge the battery, which would likely be NiCad in that scenario. Not a very safe circuit if you ask me, simple and it does work, but not safe due to lack of isolation from mains.

    • @7760468484
      @7760468484 6 років тому

      randomtronic thank you.I saw the circuit.It has 1 capacitor(CBB21 564J400V) in series to the AC and also one resistor (R684) across the capacitor.This is then connected to bridge rectifier(MB6S).The out put (+ve )from Bridge rectifier is connected to 100ohm resistor in series to battery.

    • @7760468484

      randomtronic I shorted the push button to check the voltage.but after some time I saw the transistor (D965)over heated and started smoke.I checked transformer after desoldering from the circuit and the primary winding reads 5.72 ohm, feed back winding reads 0.52ohm, secondary (high voltage) winding reads 1.24H.Voltage across the battery is arround 4volt with load.What will be the problem with the circuit for not working?

    To protect transistor from voltage spike or surg...etc at the base should i use a diode or zener
    In case of a zener which value
    Of break down voltage ?
    N if that value depend from transistor to another?

    Hey, I have a similar circuit from another model of fly swatter that uses a single capacitor and a single diode. I'm interested in how it works, would you mind getting in contact with me? I think I know it, but I'm not sure - especially regarding safety issues. I really liked your video and it cleared up quite a lot for me, so thanks in any case :)

    I got one question sir. In the voltage tripler the current starts from the negative terminal of the transformer but you start rewriting the flow of current in the positive terminal.

    • @randomtronic

      Not sure I understand, there are no positive or negative terminals on transformer, it's AC
