After Dave Wottle won the 800m at Munich in 1972, my tiny Main Street’s hardware store bought a big box of cheap painter’s caps to hand out to any kid who wanted to “look like Dave.” We saw those increasingly grimy caps around town for *years!*

I think Ann Packer 800m win in 1964 should definitely be included here! She not only won it after being dead last but she also set a new WR even though she was so new to 800m and it was first time she ever raced 800m internationally- she had only done 800m races a few times before domestically to improve her stamina. She had finished 5th and 3rd in the heats and semi finals respectively so you can see how it has one of the suprising wins in athletics ever. She almost decided to ditch the final to go shopping with her fiance after she only got silver in the 400m which is her speciality. But after her fiance lost his race she was determined to win

This is crazy the amount of pressure it takes to be in the Olympics and to perform at your best is ridiculous

The fact that Christine Ohuruogu's 2008 400m come from behind Gold isn't included in this compilation is a major oversight.

Seems like falling may actually give you a boost. Could be the very short break, could be the adrenaline, but looks like this should have been studied. From falling to world record? It makes no sense, unless...

Indeed, l do also think depending on the runnner, it either breaks you or just fuels you and something in your mind is like "That's it, the gloves are off" kinda thing. I'd definitely say most of whatever it is, is psychological.

What about Carl Lewis at the ‘91 world’s: clearly last out of the blocks in the 100m final, he gets up, wins and breaks the world record (9.86sec).

Some these it's a bit of a reach to call them comebacks, like the individual races they are using race tactics running at the back, it's how they run.
