I played a few early rounds at Port Fairy about 25 years ago. It was $14 in loose change for 18 holes, all put into an envelope and placed in a honesty box at the clubhouse. It was an amazing feeling on the beach watching the early morning sun come up, playing by myself, the only person on the course, at what I considered the best public course I had played on. I felt like I was at St Andrew’s, playing in the dunes at the edge of the Southern Ocean. Every morning was windy, but it didn’t matter… I haven’t played golf for years, and I don’t remember many courses that I played on, but I sure do remember Port Fairy. On one of those early morning rounds I shot my best round ever, an 87…
@@cheffy597 Thanks for sharing. It’s incredible how cheap it was back then. The price has gone up a fair bit since ($70 midweek now I think) but it remains one of the best value rounds of golf you’ll find anywhere. I must have started playing there after they had an honesty box. There’s still plenty of great value honesty box golf in Western Victoria - Peterborough in particular but also Heywood, Casterton and the Grampians Golf Club in Dunkeld. There’s a bunch of articles about Western Vic honesty box courses on my blog: underthecard.com/blogs/golf-blog?page=2
It's a little crazy that we have quality courses packed so close to one another in Victoria. Apart from California, is there anywhere else on earth that comes close? And even then, California is not quite the same because at least in Victoria many of these courses are accessible. The public courses down the peninsula are better than most. It's quite incredible.
New York State has some incredible areas - Long Island and Westchester county - although many of them are exclusive and inaccessible for most. Surrey outside London is an exceptional area full of magnificent courses too. The Melbourne Sandbelt is well and truly in the conversation of the best golfing areas in the world IMO.
Interesting selection: 7th at National is a no brainer; won’t argue with RM; but Vic members probably don’t see 16th as one of their top holes - 14th a classic; KH excellent 18 all around (though 16th is the show stopper) and Port Fairy - Isn’t that one a bit mundane?, compared to the long par four two holes later (index one?). Anyway, each to their own, thanks for the filmography and effort.
@@jimmantle4361 Thanks very much Jim. It’s a selection of my ‘favourite’ holes. I agree with you that 14 at Port Fairy is a ‘better’ hole than 12 but I love the view on 12 and have fond memories there because it’s where I made one of my first eagles when I was a kid (but that doesn’t mean I only consider holes I’ve had success on!). The par-3s at Vic are exceptional. Very few courses I’ve played have a better collection of short holes. But I love the risk reward element of 15… it baits the longer hitter into having a crack at the green or trying to drive close to the green instead of laying up to the wide part of the fairway. Have you thought about what your favourite 5 would be?
Hello mate! Fair point. These videos aren’t quick to produce so it was just about time management really. I’d like to do a similar video about favourite par-3s in Victoria or Melbourne so I’ll take it on board for that one! Have you got a top 5 list of holes in Vic?
