"I sure APPR. that" ! ... "and over something as STUPID as guttering" ? ... "all-silly". End-run: I continue to enjoy my "resolve". (THX. AGAIN PUBG). : - )
Just looking at those old gutter screens design is obvious why they do not work. The people who install those gutters for you have no reason to complain they got paid. But this was last time they get paid because you got smarter and It's very nice of you revealing the truth and you proved it. We appreciated it.
@@TommyZTrains Please share link for PART 2 video. I'm looking and comparing gutter systems for my parents. They need a new roof and so I'm exploring (low maintenance) systems for northeast (NJ) location. Thanks much
It would depend on the pitch of your roof and if you have snow and ice. I live in the Sacramento Valley of northern California. I live in a ranch style house with a lower pitch roof than yours, no snow or ice. I purchased the style of gutter guards you originally paid someone to install. They work great on my house. The guards cost me approx $100.00 from Home Depot and were a piece of cake to install.
Shur Flo and A-M make a product like this and you can get off Amazon. Reviews seem to be very good. You may need to sweep off the top of the guards every so often. They sell a special brush that screws into a long stick so all you do is stand on the ground and drag the brush along the gutter guard to clear them off. Still need to maintain, but much easier to give them a quick sweep than clean out gutters.
I have the exact same vinyl gutter guards as the originals-- but mine lie flatter on the gutters and have been working great. I installed them 5 years ago, took one day using only a tin snips and cost $80 for the whole house. Since then I've had no issues with rain, snow, ice or leaves (we get a lot in Wisconsin). Like I said, mine lie at a lower angle (under 10 degrees) and there is a small raised ridge that catches all the rain. I do think the vinyl guards with screens are a good quality product, but they might not work in all cases. I think these failed from a combination of the roof pitch, gutters lying too low or sagging and some lousy contractors. Some of those looked like they were about 45 degrees.
Yours worked, his didn’t. He said we can draw our own conclusion. Therefore, The only way the gutters could overflow is if they were full to the top, low drainage. Had nothing to do with the screens. The screen were clear his video proved that. Therefore water could go through and since the holes were staggered they would catch water. His gutters were full of debris possibly when they put the screens on. All he had to do is clean out the gutter. His vid even showed debris.
"BOY O' BOY WATCH THOSE SALESMAN JOHN" !! ... "They" say alot of things !. Me ? "I haven't a clue". All I know is what this video depicts: "a ROTTEN job that I myself had to correct", (that too this day has CHANGED EVERYTHING). THOUGHT: I'm disinterested in "gutters", and could give two shits ... & all I DO KNOW is that I FOUND "Resolve" (amid my solace of NEVER having to screw with anything) except only once in a blue moon when stuff sometimes DOES accumulate (as depicted in video part 2). Put simply: it went (in MY example) from once every couple of months / to MAYBE once a year !. *THE BEST PART: *The dam things ALWAYS FLOW and never (now) plug ! / "you'll find ME there". Best of luck John !.
I'm running into the same issue you did. The gutter is much lower than the shingles and the shingles with drip edge extend off the roof quite far, making the slope too steep for any tuck under shingle gutter guards. So, those metal ones it is.
I have the alu-rex gutter gards! They lie flat & do a good job! My basement walls are much dryer. However, I have approx a 4 12 pitch. Nevertheless, I still have to use my leaf blower at least 5 times in October & November to blow leafs off the gutter guards. So what I have found out is, yes, they keep the downspouts from clogging up, however, I still have to remove-wet soggy leafs that won’t blow off without help( use a leaf blower.) This is less trouble then cleaning out gutters that have no protection at all!
Your spot-on Dave, the only "wild card" / is the roof pitch (like you said) and (in my example), the way the wind BLOWS *(as I WELL KNOW those "wet / soggy leaves" you preface), but mine always dry and seem ta blow away in couple days / the like. (See all that in "Part 2" video HERE). Best.
Tommy is talking about a pro product called: Leaf Relief TP5300 sold by PlyGem/Cornerstone to contractors all across USA. The product is also available under GutterClean System M-5300 in Canada and Europe.
I suppose there are a lot of ways to help with rain run-off. When it's pouring down rain, gutters are somewhat in play. I have a slightly sloped property from front to back. I had a concrete sidewalk poured on the three sides: front, side, & side. I had them pitch to channel the water away from the foundation and also had the ground graded to facilitate this also. I haven't put any gutter guards yet, but still thinking about it to help with the leaves.
Hey Scruff ... "It was for me" ... what once was a pain in the ass is all but OVER (as it has been). I DO get up once in awhile to blow-off the tops ./ but THAT IS IT !. End run (well for me): "bullseye". :- )
After watching several of these vids pointing out the dis-benefits of the various types of guards; I'm not so sure I want to buy any of them. My gutters are old (ca. 1997) bent and twisted, mostly by ice. Next step is to check for a deeper-trenched or broader gutter (if they exist) and invest in a DYI gutter cleaning attachment offered by Shop-Vac. I also wonder if there is a larger-than-standard downspout, to carry more water off in the first place? While talking to a roofer about the existing gutters; he was of the opinion that the gutters "were not close enough" to the edge of the edge of the shingles?
NOTHING "dismisses" anything John ... gutters will always need some attn. / and my solace here is that I like the the "every two year plan" / vrs. the the two MONTH plan (in a cleaning plugged up headache). After that: "I can THEN worry about way more important things in life". BEST.
Hi, So tell me after a few years how are they doing now? Have you had issues with leaves sitting on the flat surface and clogging the screens? I'm getting ready to choose what type I go with and want to see which way I should go. Thanks in advance.
Any guard with a fine screen will not let anything through and all debris will just lay on the gutter. Your new choice is better because they let the little stuff through that exits through the down spouts. The big stuff will lay on the gutter and get blown off eventually. A type that I like and may install on my house is a product called Raindrop.
I’m wondering if an ice jam will push under the shingle with that “wall” shown in the video after the screens were installed correctly. My son put mine up and aim hav8mg same problem as shown in first part of video. He foot the bill for it, so I’ll just quietly fix it myself.
I suppose the answer may lie in your region, the "house", the roof pitch, the way it faces - and so on Ed ... all I can say is that this installation eliminated every / amid ALL problems / DONE. :- )
We have an aggressive pitch roof as well. Its a 12, and just got a metal roof installed months back. Would these work with metal roofs without voiding warrantys? We have a life time, and don't wanna void a 15,500 roof warranty. What are these called?
Hi Christina ! *I really do not know what these are "called", I guess all I would say is is that "Siding & Alum. / Window Outlets "sell" Gutter Screen. With a metal roof (and with such an 'agressive' pitch), I would think these would work great ... "The Problem" ?: Ten Salesman = TEN "opinion's" !: (mines the best - NO: "mine is" and so-on) ! All I would add to that is, ta do your research and base your "action's" on those FACTS. I DID get estimates (using the Metal Gutter Screens you'll see here in the video for this House), for nearly 4,000.00 ! My point here (in this Video), IS ("and was") to just BE AWARE of fast "snappy-talking" Salesmen and BE INFORMED !. My hand (in "MY" example here), was a "forced-hand" ! ... *I had to problem-solve (and did) because I was an ASS for being "passive and naive", so STAND YOUR GROUND, ask questions, CALL referral's : "all-of-it" !! All I can say is (in this Video's example): is that these Screens I installed CHANGED EVERYTHING and continue to work flawlessly ! "PEROID". Never again, have I EVER had too "screw-around" with ANYTHING ... These things (Screen's), changed EVERYTHING. "I wish you well hun" !!
So they kept the rain in and the pine needles and roof granules out, did they? I installed the old vinyl type screen guards on my house years ago and now they're warped to hell with the inner screen falling off.
See "Gutter-Screens Part 2". (I revisit this topic a couple years later Jim) ... in a word: "YES". These were the best investment I ever made. Being fair: I have a steep roof pitch, *(and perhaps having alot of straight-line wind is a factor as well) ... "Here we go again; with more Maple Tree buds, helicopters, and debris" , and just when you think your "sunk": (everything's covered, wet, and their plugged), EVERYTHING "blows away" that next-day, and your golden. :- )
Sounds like what I want. I have a fairly steep roof pitch on my old house as well, built in 1930. I'm just damned glad that I didn't pay anyone to install that vinyl crap. Every year, my back gutter gets clogged at the downpipe. Then when it rains, the water pours over in a stream onto my back stairs, right where I want to step of course. As you may imagine, I'm a little sick and tired of hauling the ladder out to unclog the downpipe end of the gutter. I'll look for those metal gutter screens.
How far do your shingles hang over the gutter? The problem I run into is that I can't get the guard in because there's not enough room to get it back against the drip guard because my gutters hang over my gutters about an inch.
It varies ... I can remember those "close quarters" (amid the inconsistencies with that "over-hang" you site example of) ... and my runs are CRAP because of the nail and Ferrel design !. *HANGERS are THE ONLY WAY ta go "NOW". They'll go "in and down" if your gentle and snap them in "just so". Best of Luck
@@VanAshke Not at all; but unfortunately "I don't know" ... BUT: read down where others have identified that "name", and ANY siding-place will stock / and carry the "part". :- )
Gese 4 years go by FAST ! "SUPER" !! I haven't been on a ladder since ! The tree buds were all over the roof, and soon will come the Helicopters ... "I had no issue at toil- whatsoever ! "NONE". It's funny: EVERY "Storm" I still look at the downspouts and the gutters ... BEST TIME AND MONEY I EVER SPENT. "There it is".
I am a gutter installer who has OCD/and a perfectionist. Please Consider: Fact: The open mouth of a gutter is a trap - Fiction: There is a perfect solution. Fact: Meshes, foam pad inserts, micro screens, just clog up. There are 4 products from the best system I found alu-rex.com. All are perforated aluminum: #1- #5300 cover/topper (with a flow restriction lip) and is retro/ Reno (installed on existing gutter as a after market product) #2-5200 a new construction continuous hanger ( NOT a TOPPER ) it is the hanger that is running and supporting the entire length of the gutter and is superior because it is not the weaker spaced system of spikes or spaced hangers. #3 #5800 a heavier gauge aluminum which is even stronger that I can stand on! #4 DoublePro designed for finer particles using 2 layers to help flush out fine stuff with the Venturi effect. Conclusion: you will get some debris build up and fine particles like roof grains but this system is way better than every other I’ve seen. With this one I don’t get complaints/call-back. It does require some maintenance. One eg. Is where wind cannot help blow out debris like on an inside corner or sheltered area however a quick swipe off the top is easy compared to digging muck out of the gutter trap or bottom. But some critics cannot recognize the benefits (perhaps some critics have black and white thinking -either approve or condemn) This is a good coping mechanism and will help reduce maintenance.
Hi Claude, "Of course" (the granules / the like). : - ) *I'd defer to "part-2" in my having revisited MY installation / (see that video here). NOTHING "well that I've ever seen" ... is a "walk-away / live happily ever after" thing. All I know is that IN MY EXAMPLE, that I've only once gotten a ladder out to "freshen-up" things and perform a "check" (WHERE BEFORE I was up once a month / screwing around with clogs). House's are / and always will be - a maintenance "pain in the arce", and after that: the variables of wind direction / tree's / and roof PITCH all become a factor ! (IOW no 2 homes are alike). So (in finality) for ME / it was one of the smartest things I ever done. BEST :- )
Thank you for the informative video. We just moved to Missouri and I have gutter issues. Lots of oak leaves that get in the gutters. Can you tell me where I can get the screens you used or the manufacturer of the gutter screens you used?
Hi Mike: Please read down below, and the short answer is (and this i9s my fault), "I DON'T KNOW". Find these at most larger siding places, guttering outlets. ALL MY BEST.

Spot-on Mark, (and well written). FACT: I know / BUT still "don't know SQUAT" about ANY of this stuff ... BUT, what I do know is that ALL THE TIME I used to look-out at at my guttering-runs, and it would drive me absol. banana's seeing them OVERFLOW and "flood-over" in and during a sudden heavy-rain ... "just the weight alone set me out on a Ladder during the hardest rains there were, "yacking them in and out" with a broom stick, (or beating on the downspouts until I found that "temporary resolve"). For the longest time, I've been in want of a solution / or wanted to install "SOMETHING" atop of my gutters to "help" (or all but eliminate that which I preface in the above)... and THAT is how all this started, *(and you see [LATER] what I was left with. Anyway: the END-RUN is after I corrected EVERYTHING the issue ended & STOPPED dead in it's tracks !. I decided to visit my local "BIG Siding outlet here" and ask: "do you / or can you recommend someone whom would do bla, bla, bla ... "ta help me" ?? ... and THAT is where I found the contractor that said / and assured me that: "you can kiss this issue goodbye Sir" ... "and here's what I'll do": - - - (he critiqued a list amid a litany of things that would be DONE) , ................................................. "and you SAW what I was left with". I'd love to replace EVERYTHING (with the newly designed hangers / Commercial downspouts / "the works" !!! ), but: to spend what "6K" to re-do 'EVERYTHING' would be stupid ("and pretty pathetic for something as silly as guttering") ... so, "after that": "I'm simply too disinterested to give a crap", but I soon did / I then picked up the pieces and FOUND that same resolve which remains to this day. Lastly: I hope that in my "next life", that I'd be lucky enough ta find someone like YOU to help me !. I DEMAND that "perfection" (which you site in yourself / in your example) ... and I'd of fully understood (in MY example) YOU saying: hey, wait a second here my friend ... "this is a pretty tall order, and I'm gonna tell you why" .... RIGHT THERE I would have likely done EVERYTHING all over again (new runs / whatever) because (again: in the "END-Run") it's all shit ... but: this is the best of that "all shit". "I get it". If you watch "part-2", I revisit this "matter" and actually show people MY "resolve" and "MY" Solution. "It worked Mark", Facts: "I STILL don't know squat", (about guttering), and; all I would add (after that), is that I love these dam things more and more EVERY-YEAR !. :- ) Best
Hi, If the gutter cover lays flat , doesn't debris build up on top the cover and maybe stop some of the water flow ?? I thought with a pitch leaves needles etc would blow off . I put on a couple different covers and ended up putting on the sponge type and they lay almost flat but like I said debris stayed on top and help decay the sponge after 2 yrs. Fm what I seen on utube the best cover is the aluminum with stainless steel screen, but haven't tried those.((cover glove pro. ).
Hi, "NO" !!! :- ) The answer is YES (too the example YOU site) ... but the debris blows off ! ALL My Leaves are down and these continue to be EVERYTHING I dreampt of ! *I haven't done a thing since Richard. I have Pines (and Maple Tree's), NO ISSUES WHATSOEVER. "It just has ta work" ... THESE DO. :- )
Just don't buy anything that is micro mesh as they are the worse. The fine holes act as a filter and yep , like any filter it catches fine debris that clog the screen
What is the name of the metal 10 foot gutter guards you installed and where did you buy them. I have oak trees and maple trees that both will clog up a gutter both in the spring and fall. Just curious to know if you still need to clean them.
Do they really work though. I have oak trees that put off little tiny fox tails in the spring and maple trees put off the little spinners that will clog up most any gutter guards. It seems like the fox tails from the oak trees would lay over the holes and clog them up. Would hate to spend all that money for them not to work.
Hi Greg, Maybe you need ta see "part-2" (the follow-up to this video). I don't suppose ANYTHING'S "perfect", .... and in your example (with the Fox Tails), IF their anything like our "buds", or Maple-Tree "helicopters", then the short answer might be "yes" - *with the condition that you may have ta blow-off the the DRIED material once a year or so ... Hope that helps / best.
Hi Michael: "I don't know". *I made a big-mistake not videoing the P/N / amid noting the "maker" of these screens. I'd go to my local supplier and being these have PLASTIC (too hug the gutter-wall), they "must-be" unique ?. I know NOTHING more. * * * NOW that "Helicopter-Season" has passed * * * and: I AGAIN had no issues whatsoever with my gutters ... (Helicopters off my Maple Tree's) and if you'll read DOWN, you'll read I never have (or HAD) "issue's" AGAIN. Many seem annoyed and "angry" (at me), about ANY, or "ALL" of this ... I cannot figure out however: "WHY". All I know is this video 'depicted' MY ISSUE, and I MYSELF grabbed the bull by the horns and fixed it ! / PERIOD. "after that: I could really give a shit". WHY get pissey and annoyed at me ? < not you BTW >. "I endorse nobody here", I know nothing / nor do I even care about "Gutter's", and again: I FIXED and remedied MY Issue / done. To this very day: I have NEVER addressed another guttering issue at my home EVER AGAIN ... after that: I wish YOU well and the best of luck. *THANKS for allowing me to "VENT" Mike. :- )
Do you think the old pieces would have worked if they were flat instead of tucked under your shingles the wrong way? Because whoever installed it installed it the wrong way.
Good question : "HONESTLY" ? .... "no". If you watched "part 2", I show the last 2-3 of stuff that accumulated, and I guess that with "glued on" screen, sticks, and with just general debris / that metal is the better way to go. "Just MY opinion".
Those gutter screens are manufacture by ALU-REX INC. Levis, Quebec, Canada, www.alu-rex.com (M-5300 gutter clean) was the name of the type of gutter screens Mr. Trains used.
How can critics argue with the 18 advantages I found with almost 2 decades of installing alu-rex.com for around $4.00/ft instead of products that clog up for $6-to an insane cost of $50/ft. Is that called Pay more-Get less! Like the saying goes: if you think hiring a Professional is expensive ,try hiring an Amateur!
Tommy, thanks for the video. I am thinking about getting gutter guards because I have a Maple tree that produces seeds from hell and clogs the downspouts. Forgive me but I did not hear what type of gutter guard you used. I know it is the flat stainless with the bib (lip) towards the edge. Are these pretty common in the big box DIY stores? Or is their a specific manufacturer? Thanks, Robert
Hi Robert: The honest answer is "I do NOT know". I'd visit / compare the big-box place and buy a piece, and THEN visit your local "Siding World Place" ... THEN compare metal thickness / rubber inlay "qualities" / etc .... My GUESS would be NO (too the big-box stuff), and this sort of material (amid it's quality), is more a "Warehouse" type of product / quality / rigidity/ structural integrity ... All I KNOW is that it works / DONE. PS: I think you are speaking about Maple Tree "Helicopter's" ? *I have these (look at the video), and there is NO issue !.. This "system" changed EVERYTHING for me. I have not ONCE touched it ever, (since it's installation), "as there is never any example of having to do so" !! :- )
TommyZTrains Thanks! Yes, these seed helicopters have clogged my new gutters & I really want to solve the problem as opposed to blowing them out all the time. I'll check around to see what I can come up with. Thanks for the reply! Robert
Gotcha. *** Bob you'll look and see (when these come flying down / soaked in a rain), that it's HOPELESS ... THEN: The NEXT-TIME that you "look", everything's GONE, and they've blown away ! I can't say ENOUGH how much I love these ! "You'll see".
I'd LOVE ta tell you, but I honestly don't know !! To my knowledge these have NOT been improved on. Perhaps you could "freeze" the video and take a picture / go to a larger "Siding-gutter place" and I bet they'll know once they see them . :- (
No sir you are mistaken the name is T-Rex #5300 and the website is alu-rex.com and I have no complaints on this product as an installer owner / operator
Hi, I never touched them again, UTTER-PERFECTION. One and DONE, Anything that blows on (say that's WET), dries and falls to the ground. I never do anything but watch perfect-flow during heavy rains.
Great video. My only question is this. The style of these gutter guards are basically the same as all the rest of the flat screens. It would seem to me that you will still have to climb back there a couple times a year to get the crap off that is sitting on top of the gutter guards. Those holes will get clogged and defeat everything you have done. It that is true, it's not worth the investment. I have had a number of people tell me the best gutter guard is no gutter guard. You go up and clean out the gutters a couple times a year, or you pay someone, and it's done.
Hi Bob, "I'd agree" ... and I suppose that the roofs PITCH / surroundings, and location (the direction the house faces an so-on), would matter as well. THAT SAID: I'd say (in MY example) that you watch "part 2" ... and then you can see what MY CIRCUMSTANCE "was" (and IS). So far as the screen itself: I think the screens 'ledge', (and it's circular holes) may play-into MY result. After that: all I would say is that after cleaning and cleaning, and cleaning (amid a pouring rain / my gutters being all plugged), that I NEVER have had any further issues. You'd be 100 % right about the "NOTHING" ... but again: (with ME), I'd be to disinterested ta give a shit, *(and Gutter Screens don't interest me "PERIOD"), my POINT: "I FOUND MY RESOLVE" / It "worked" for ME ... "that's all I'm saying here". :- ) . I hate cleaning the mud and muck (or I used too), outa my guttering, and NOW I don't have to, "that's all I'm saying here" !. There it is. All the best ! :- )
My buddy sold and installed gutters for over 40 yrs. I ask him what was the best guards he laughed and said that none were worth a shit..noticed he had no guards on his home gutters..
I put that plastic stuff on my own house and only clean the gutters every four years. My pitch is 4/12. I have two Pin Oaks in my yard that slightly overhang the front of my house. Having watched your video, your problem was not the screens but the horrendous gutter job. However did those gutters needs to be reported to the BBB. It looks like they felt that because they knew what end of the hammer hits the nail head, they knew how to work on houses.
LOL big time ! "thanks". Gese I tend to agree ! Me ? *I'm just glad I'LL likely never have ta piss with this issue EVER again. *WHATEVER it's made "of", it just has ta WORK !. :- )
He told me NOT to buy the vinyl ones several times, emphatically, but NEVER said exactly why! Did they collapse? Did they clog? Did they not direct the water into the gutters as they should? Were they properly installed at the correct angle? What was it?? We'll never know. I appreciate his intentions to help others, really, but details do matter.
Your RIGHT John ! ... "Just buy what works for YOU". I FOUND and HAVE my resolve, and I hope that you find YOURS. :- ) "It's just a stupid screen". Plastic or metal / *everyone's got an 'opinion' ... "and in MY setting / example the issues now moot" / FIXED. BEST : - )
Hi Jer: "I really screwed up here": The honest answer is that I have NO Idea WHO made the screen's that were the 'remedy' (for my solution). I should have looked, recorded the part No. , / and the Name of the Company, but alas, "I didn't". All I can say is that they are very "rigid", and have a clear-colored rubber strip that seal them up to the the gutter (just under the drip edge). Here's how I found them: I went to a HUGE Siding / guttering place "HERE" called "ABC Supply", and they took me in the back "building" amid a thousand different things (with regard to house Siding / and the like), and THERE these were. They had two types: Plastic, or METAL (The "Metal" were the example that I site HERE in the video that I BOUGHT. After that: all I can say is that I have NEVER "revisited" this issue ever again, and they continue to be 100 % "problem free". Quote: (From the Siding place), "we don't sell that "big-box junk" (that you have in your Video), and THIS is what we think you need, (and want). "We've never had a complaint amid our customers using THIS", *(He could not have been more RIGHT). I hope this helps. *End run: just GO to your local 'place', study the picture (here) of what these 10 foot sections are, (and look like), and THEN Hopefully FIND those examples THERE. Best
Hi Thomas: "He" said "I'll do you proud", and: "I'm going to install the very screens that I've used for years" ... add to that "the sucker" (me), *and if you read the description and the comments below, THAT pretty much says the rest*. I NEVER - EVER have had to get the ladder out after, nor ever AGAIN (after all this) EVER piss with ANY "gutters" AGAIN ! < DONE >. :- )
i Do this for a Living, for the last 30 plus years. This second choice you have (ALu-rex) with the Vinyl strip is not a very good product, my supplier sold this to me for about 6 years, there is no way to secure the Back edge, and leaves and Debris still get in. We have tried all Brands, even the Mike Holmes Garbage, and have settled on the KayCan Brand (Proguard leafguard) in 4ft sections for the Last 6 or so years, it is a superior Fit, with screwholes Front and Back to secure it
Those you installed, while they will catch the rain initially, the profile will catch and hold leaves, roof gravel, needles, etc., the debris will pile up and the rain will end up running over the edge. No such thing as maintenance free gutter covers. Those you installed won’t self clean due to that lip on the front and the lip will make it difficult to sweep them off. Of course, as you found the original ones didn’t hold debris, but the water just ran right over them from the get go. There really is no way to win with gutter covers. Good video though!
I couldn't agree MORE with all you say ! / but I'd please refer you to "part 2" and it is there that all this is talked about / revisited. After that all I would add is this was a constant plague (for me) in an that I'd ALWAYS have to get a ladder out and clean these dam things again & again ... but NOW - that's over / and where I went to address this 30 times over / that "30's" been reduced to 1 time (NOW). / in my having to touch ANYTHING. "My solace lies there J".
You don't want anything plastic either, at least not in Florida. It'll fade and warp from the sun. Metal mesh is the way to go. As for a product called Leaf Guard, hone your negotiating skills because you'll need them when the salesman comes out. My neighbor was quoted $13,000 and finally got the price down to $6,000. I was told never pay more than $12 per linear foot. The product is good but it's like dealing with a used car salesman from 20 years ago.
@@TommyZTrains - Not really. You just have to do your homework. I'm getting ready for my 3rd set of guards. The first were the soft plastic type you bend and shove into the gutter. Looked and worked so good my neighbor installed them. Then high winds came and who knows where they went. The second set were a heavy plastic mesh type. Again, looked and worked good. This time the squirrels decided they liked them too. They chewed holes in them at the corners where the down spouts are. In a few days I'm having the heavy metal mesh installed. Friends and neighbors swear by them so we'll see.
If there's a ledge then leaves and debris will tend to stop there. But no ledge means water overshoots the gutter. THERE IS NO EFFECTIVE LEAF FILTER. And smaller holes means you will eventually get clogging with debris, algae and mold which will require power wash.
"But of course" !! *See part 2 and that's all gone into in finite detail. NOTHING is a tell-tail "END" to anything here ... "all I can say is that in MY example / this literally ENDED all my 'frustration'. Best : - )
I had these installed . The leaves and pine needles just built up and sat on top thus allowing the rain to pour over the edge the same as clogged gutters . i took the fucking things off after one year after paying nearly 2 grand to have them fitted.
IFM( I forgot to mention ) you can also cut an opening (at the high end of you gutter and hopefully it was sloped to the outlet) to allow a water hose in to flush out the tiny particles that can build up in time. Please keep in mind it may be better to hire someone younger to go up a ladder as we are not getting younger. Then simply cut a service cover out of the leftover alu-rex to overlap your homemade service openings and fasten with a couple of screws. It may take a number of years before this is necessary but sure is easy from the former chore of an unprotected gutter
"Well of course" / I elude too this in "part-2" JR !. Your spot-on that about every 3 years I use compressed air ta blow-off what "welds itself" into the screen tops ... "and of course their flat". But: the full import of what's going on here is that I no longer have to leave my ladder nearby to continuously CLEAN my gutters because they'd ALWAYS plug up PRIOR to my screens!. Even at the White House / what you preface here IS the "fact" ... but; my "solace" here is that I have (and can) 'move-on' with more important things in life, and "later" (on a nice day) / *I'll ENJOY that (or my doing what you say) in the quick "dusting-off" of that dried up debris. "Boy I'll take that every-time" ! "Part-2" revisits all this silliness / and does just that" !!. Best
Timothy Shively I have no idea Tim ... go to a siding place and they WILL have them !. I’ve said a ga-zillion times that if I ever go back there, I’ll find out / and post it here..
The plastic guards are crap,I like the the Leaf Relief/Shure Flo the only issue with them is stuff gets stuck to the top since there is no pitch to them but overall they work great,I tried those plastic guards the first year I was in business and then stopped using them because of how shitty they held up but good job anything 300ft and over is a lengthy job
No screen is fine enough to keep moss spores out of the gutter and if you live in an area where moss is common (i.e. not the desert) then sooner or later screened gutters are going to be packed with moss. THEN cleaning is more difficult because you have to remove the screens to clean. I don't think there's any real solution to avoid gutter cleaning... at least I haven't found it.
For those wondering who makes the metal gutter guard that TommyZTrains installed, it's Alu-Rex. Here's a manufacturer's video: ua-cam.com/video/cRqXm6z5d9w/v-deo.html
It's all "terrible" Dhc ... I just had ta just "make-due" with what I had ... It was so funny: BEFORE all this: I called and got estimates about 'just doing it all over' ... (Just replacing "everything"). I got estimates of over 5 K to do the entire thing ! < "for GUTTERING" > ???!!! MORE: *What was interesting was the FACT that I wanted too ("run by run") take it ALL down, (each of the runs), THEN, I'd clean it up nicely (I'll do ALL that I told "them"), and THEN: (the next day), you can come back and hang everything with those nice "new-design" screws, and "THEN", SCREEN EVERYTHING "after". I will also see to the FACT that every fascia boards secure as "iron", clean, and ALL IS ready ta go ! ... "what do ya say" ???: *I observed a blatant "ANGER" with each installer, whom ALL just FLAT-OUT REFUSED to do this (for me). "Begging" further, I remarked that I'd "live" with the nail-holes, and if some runs needed to be just "flat out replaced", that I'd be willing to do that as well ... but again: "they" refused. The idea was to TOTALLY abandoned the "nail & Ferrel" thing, and move on to the "New-School" fasteners. The gutters (after I later cleaned them), were as nice n' shiny as "NEW", and the other point I wanted to make, was that I NEVER said: "I want this ALL for "nothing". I'm NOT gonna be in your hair, "I want NO-PART of any of this UNLESS you ask", (or YOU Guy's need a hand), PERIOD !!! I'm not here (nor would I) breathe down your necks like some "penny saving panzy", But com'on: GIVE ME one "DUMB" reason, that I should have to replace 500' feet of gutter for a little nail-hole every 30" !!. SO: Angry and distraught, I did what this video depicts, and God as my witness: I NEVER HAVE Screwed with "any-of-it" EVER again. < DONE >. "I have better thing's ta do then screw with guttering" ... In closing: I can tell you this: If I were to try an figure how to RUIN my Business: I'd of acted EXACTLY like these idiot' s have, (and DID). After I'm done with a Service, I'll call (days later), ta follow-up on things: I insist on not only meeting, ... but EXCEEDING ALL expectation !! "THAT'S put-up or shut-up", *You'll find me there*. TommyZTrains I agree it’s totally understandable u just wanted what u paid for and it should have been done correctly with the correct parts in the first place. Just looking at the angle of those grills being the same angle as the roof be pitched....ur asking for trouble..I’m not gutter master but I’m decent with my hands and from looking at that it’s wrong....most of that install is wrong most of it just common sense...after you cleaned it up it looked amazing and what it was suppose to do... I’m about to install some rain gutters for three facia boards in my backyard that’s how I ran into your page just seeing how people install rain gutters. Doesn’t look that hard so I picked everything up from Home Depot for a couple hundred bucks and just bang it out myself. Luckily I don’t have any trees in the backyard so I don’t need the grills covering the tops. Where did you find these guys that install the gutters and grills....they have decent reviews or u just went with it? Hopefully u complained like hell to them. They obviously didn’t meet your expectations and which they should have gone back and fixed it properly and make u happy. Otherwise bad reviews and complaints to other prospective customers will not end well with them.....they will def lose customers running a business like this....so terrible so sorry for this headache u had to deal with.

Unfortunately, there is no perfect solution. The cheap plastic ones are no good. The metal gutter guards you installed , sits too flat. Then leafs & sticks build up on your shingles, and now your shingles will rot. I witness this problem often.
Correct: "They lay there" *(and the leaves ARE RIGHT NOW as I speak), but: as soon as the rain ends / & things 'dry', THEN they'll blow off and I'm GOLDEN. If you'll watch "part 2", the update: (made two years later AFTER this was made), you'll see that I disagree with your comment: End thought: I absolutely ENDED any and all gutter issues AFTER I did these "metal" covers.
When it requires power washing that won't be easier.
@@4thphaseofmalaise They needn't be power washed you simpleton.
YOU nailed exactly my problem too. I have the metal lin front and plastic in rear...Plastic is leaving soon! Thanks,
LOVE the Metal Stuff. ; - )
this is why i do all my work myself!!...there are a lot of crappy "so call contractors" out there.
Thanks for that video. I'm about to have gutters installed and suspect the salesman is selling me a pig in a poke.
House's are life's greatest pain in the ass !! ("sometimes") :- )
THANK YOU Rex !!!
Thank you for the complete review!
Very informative Sir ....................Thank You............
Thanks !! : - )
Hi Keith ! "EASY", see "Part 2" and I do that very thing. Best. :- )
Any guard with a fine screen will not let anything through and all debris will just lay on the gutter. Your new choice is better because they let the little stuff through that exits through the down spouts. The big stuff will lay on the gutter and get blown off eventually. A type that I like and may install on my house is a product called Raindrop.
Good info. ! *In MY example I STILL have rarely ever had to monkey with "anything" Gutter related ... "It's the best thing I ever did". Best.

I suppose the answer may lie in your region, the "house", the roof pitch, the way it faces - and so on Ed ... all I can say is that this installation eliminated every / amid ALL problems / DONE. :- )
Beautiful home my friend 👍👍👍
The trick isn’t keeping things out of the gutter. The trick is making them easier to clean
Check out leaf filter!

What is the brand or name of you gutter protectors you liked? I don't know what to buy? Sandy, FL
No idea Sandra, please read about that in the description / or in the comments below. Best
After 5 years, are you still happy with these? What about the granules of the shingles? They must fall through the holes?
BEST :- )

Thanks so much for this video………. so clever and instructive
LOL ... thanks. It ended a real "plague" in my little world. :- )
What is the name of the metal 10 foot gutter guards you installed and where did you buy them. I have oak trees and maple trees that both will clog up a gutter both in the spring and fall. Just curious to know if you still need to clean them.
"I have absol. no idea". *See part-2* of this video, (and I critique that very thought): "why didn't I pay attn. to WHOM made these !. Sorry.
Pretty certain they are leaf relief. look em up here on youtube.
So you have no clogging issues year round except to maybe blow them off 1 time a year
Hope you're still here-what kind or better yet, what brand of guards are those?
Who make them and where can you buy them?
I don't know ... (I got these at a siding-place).
@@TommyZTrains I did a bit more research and I guess people do put them under the shingles like that I never knew.
What is the name of the metal screen you finally used?
Haven't the slightest idea Steve, read below as some have found that one out ... "I myself, never looked nor asked". :- (
Those gutter screens are manufacture by ALU-REX INC.
Soo. Where can i get those from and the name brand. Thanks bro
Hi, Read the remarks below ... "any siding place I'll guess".
What was the brand you used to replace the old?
Read BELOW. "I don't remember is the honest answer" ! ANY "top-end" Siding place would sell them I should suppose. :- )
Leaf Relief
No it is called #5300 made by alu-rex.com
Yes, I totally enjoy mowing them over but that's only when they're dry and on the ground! ☺
Tommy what is the name of the gutter guard you installed can't find it on the WEB would like to buy them.
Thanks
I think it's called "Leaf Relief". They were originally made by Alcoa, which then sold it's exterior products division to Ply Gem Industries.
What brand/model guards did you use? I like them and would like to install my own!
I'd LOVE ta tell you, but I honestly don't know !! To my knowledge these have NOT been improved on. Perhaps you could "freeze" the video and take a picture / go to a larger "Siding-gutter place" and I bet they'll know once they see them . :- (
Leaf relief is the name of the product, you can also get a similar less expensive version called Shur Flo.
THANKS John !! I do recall these were 12 bucks a "stick" (think each stick was 10 ft.).
N8 Nate You're welcome!
No sir you are mistaken the name is T-Rex #5300 and the website is alu-rex.com and I have no complaints on this product as an installer owner / operator
Hi -- how have they done of the last couple years
Cheers
Hi, I never touched them again, UTTER-PERFECTION. One and DONE, Anything that blows on (say that's WET), dries and falls to the ground. I never do anything but watch perfect-flow during heavy rains.
Can you tell me where you got the metal guards you finally used?
MrSpinnerbug - If you haven’t replaced yours yet, check out LeafBlaster Pro. Seems to be a good design. See my comment, above.
BEST : - )
Oooops. I guess I "offended". Gotta be so careful nowadays.
@@johnguerriere291 "No-way" ... : - ) "life's to short John". !!
Looks like they put the originals on upside down. You have gaps between guards, and they should not protrude above the troth of the gutter.
I missed it. What is this brand?
Best
you bought the cheapest of all products. who installed them and what was his experience?
We have tried all Brands, even the Mike Holmes Garbage, and have settled on the KayCan Brand (Proguard leafguard) in 4ft sections for the Last 6 or so years, it is a superior Fit, with screwholes Front and Back to secure it
GOOD information Mike ... "All I know (in my example) is that THESE were my "FIX", ... and AFTER these: "I never monkeyed with the issue again".
It just goes to show if you want it done right you have to do it yourself
If I had a Cigar: "you'd have it "loads" !!
lol he did it himself the 1st time
You don't want anything plastic either, at least not in Florida.
"I'll just bet it's all bets OFF in Florida" !!! / : - )
Upside down! ..that is why you got runoff.the screen retains the water tension which the plastic would cut into. I am no fan off plastic either.
You still gotta clean them off a few times a year lol.
a lot easier cleaning then off than cleaning out gutters.
GOT-IT !!! : - )
The drip edging is located under the edge of the shingles on the roof.
Check them in two or three years. If you get a lot of leaf & debris on them they'll going to need cleaning. Because they are flat.
Best
OK, So WHAT is the brand name ???? Where did you get them? "C'mon Man"
Timothy Shively I have no idea Tim ... go to a siding place and they WILL have them !.
I had the aluminum put on. Great
I can feel your pain. Any time you buy plastic or fiberglass you take a chin shot. Metal that i s stainless or aluminum is best.
Super duper video Good 👍 on the UA-cam.
Very kind, THANKS ! *They continue to be one of the smartest things I EVER did, I never fussed with "ANYTHING" Again either.
6/12 there. To me it seems they'd work better without the screen. The holes alone should be good enough.
First mistake I see at 5:25 is that the installer should've cut parts of the ends off to over lap the next piece.
And the plastic ones were installed upside down.
I'd agree ... all I can say is I mess with the gutter-thing MUCH LESS often ... ("now"). : - )
look at all the leaves ...get back to us next year..with compare
For those wondering who makes the metal gutter guard that TommyZTrains installed, it's Alu-Rex. Here's a manufacturer's video: ua-cam.com/video/cRqXm6z5d9w/v-deo.html
No one takes pride in their work anymore. It’s a shame.
"Best comment I've ever had" !! / *Unfortunately your RIGHT Nick.
Who installed the garage canopy spout that shits terrible
I will also see to the FACT that every fascia boards secure as "iron", clean, and ALL IS ready ta go ! ... "what do ya say" ???:
*I observed a blatant "ANGER" with each installer, whom ALL just FLAT-OUT REFUSED to do this (for me).
The point: I'M THE "GOD-DARNED" Customer !! ... ***** YOU are, or will be working for "ME".
In closing: I can tell you this: If I were to try an figure how to RUIN my Business: I'd of acted EXACTLY like these idiot'
s have, (and DID). After I'm done with a Service, I'll call (days later), ta follow-up on things: I insist on not only meeting, ... but EXCEEDING ALL expectation !! "THAT'S put-up or shut-up", *You'll find me there*. I have a GREAT Customer base.
Best :- )
Sure appr. the concerns ... and DAM-PROUD of ya, and what YOU did with yours !. I guess the "sour-note" in the doing it yourself, are the 10' sections ... often as not the joints leak. BUT: I am NO expert. So far as while I found the Guys to do my job: it was the Metal Supplier place (a dam big one in my area) ... I called: poised the question; and immead. they said: "call this so n' so" and you'll be golden.
Believe me: "I blew my stack" ... and upon going back to the Supplier (that I preface in the above) I had ta grab the bull by the horn's because the SOB that did it, wouldn't call me BACK !. THAT'S what pisses me off ... I'm a reasoned man, but the no-call stuff "burns" all that down, and in the end: I got back my money amid "some" unpleasantness ... Yeah: "It gets in ya", ... (and I paid top dollar too), WITH a tip (in cash).
< STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES >
Lets both light a nice Cigar and say "DONE" !! *You take care Dhc. :- )
I hope you took this guy to court and reported him to BBB.
Fortunately I was able to resolve the issue with him ... "it ALMOST got to that point tho".
as they say....if you want a good job, do it yourself. but I would certainly would have had a new seamless gutter system installed first...that one is past its' expiry date
"Your so right Nero" !!
The fine screen was the problem. RIP the screen off....good to go.

Can you let them fix them for you? You can see they will not work. They need to fix them for sure.BAD JOB.
+Frank Smith Hi Frank, as the clip depict's, I DID replace everything myself. As of now, I've been left "hi and dry" and the Contractor refuse's to call me back after repeated messages. Soon I will file a Police Report / get a hold of B.B.B. and the Bureau of Consumer Affairs.
And C they where up side down JS
"And I was such an ass I didn't even see that myself Ed" !! *The Siding-Company told me that in the first seconds of this clip. Then all the other Contractors standind at the counter laughed their asses off too; saying that same thing !!

Your SPOT-ON Dave !, "It was".
Ameriatex says to install with the mesh screen up. I bought 4 of these today to fit my 6 inch gutters, but the don't fit, too wide, glad I watched this video....I'm taking them back & getting the metal ones.
I buy the same ones you have the first time and i have the same problem
I start changing already 👍🏻

At another House we own, "YOU WOULD". ESP. the "Maple Tree Helicopter's" / Pine Needles, "and everything else" ... I NEVER fussed with my guttering again PERIOD. With me it's "put up, or shut-up" !! *All I can tell you is Gutter's are something I never think about, (NOW) ... and the dry days (amid a wind), take care of everything. *I haven't any "allegiance" to "Gutter Screen Companies" / like: ("and could give 2 shits") ... but I DO KNOW that these screens ENDED a near monthly pain / ass for me as I have better thing ta do.
No "Salesmen stuff" ... these WORK / THERE IT IS.
ALL THE BEST ! :- )
So take the gutter guards off and have someone blow the gutters out a couple times a year.
You got it Ronnie ... "that's EXACTLY what I do from time to time", see "PART-2" *(for more on that).
NOTHING to gain, NO-ONE "compensating me", NO "allegiance" to anything or anyone = the FACT that I'm to disinterested ta give a shit "john", ...
IT JUST has ta work / & IT DOES. Period. *there it is*. : - )
Sue them in court, you must have small county courts claims in America....1st make it know that you want to also claim for all your legal costs to be born by the defendant, then 2nd cost of New work and all materials so born by defendant along with 8%interest ,,for loos loss of time this is most important thing when you set out to start you claim !'...don't be frighten to go to court, that's what they are there for in any with a democracy.
Tally ho .. and good hunting !
English Mik.
Michael: YOU are a "put-up-or-shut-up GUY" !!! "LOL". Thanks so very much for taking the time ta weigh-in here ... END-RUN: "I got a 90% refund, and moved-on".
That nice 3/8 inch ledge is gonna catch a bunch of debris and your gonna cuss yourself again. I know what works if you really want to know.
I did a 2 year "revisit" Clip Gary ... I'm afraid that FOR-ME that's not the case. It's going on 3 years and I've never had ta go-up the ladder again. End-run: I'm elated with MY outcome. See "gutter screens part 2" for more / up ta you. :- )
