Now I can never unsee that. 😆
I never ever comment on anything. But that made my chuckle .👍
Silk Sonic has been absolutely refreshing to hear on the radio
It would be even better if their lyrics weren't so cheesy. When I listen to their stuff, I have to actively focus purely on the music or I start to cringe.
Ditto. I was going to ask "Where's Bruno Mars?"
refreshing as 70s music in 2022 can be
The album "An Evening with Silk Sonic" was an instant classic.
@@slartibartfast2649 I think the lyrics are really fun and clever. I don't see how they can be "cheesy" when they're not taking themselves super seriously. Cheesiness usually comes from 1) cliches; 2) over-earnestness. I don't see either of those elements in their lyrics.
"Eurovision is an oddly politicized signing contest where you all have to present original songs, and it's usually what you might describe as sort of cheesy glammy camp Euro trash - BUT!" - best definition of Eurovision ever.
Would love to see a "6 Pop Songs that are actually crap" video lol
nah too much negativity is boring
@@jimit.4220 more like nah, too much material to boil down to 6 songs.
@@macdietz what do you define as bad?
Yeah, the whole premise here is that almost all pop is crap, so the inversion would be something like 6 well-known concertos that are actually crap.
You just did. All the songs in this video are actually crap. I am astonished that a guy as smart and musically sophisticated as David Bennett thinks they are good. maybe he is trying to maintain the connection with Gen Z who actually likes this stuff.
There was plenty of crap in the 70s and 80s too. It's just all that's been forgotten and the classics are what we remember now and associate with that period.
Yes, but if you compare the best from that era to the best of this era, which do you think comes out on top?
@@Althom1990 That depends on your taste and personal preferences.
True
David had to do a fair amount of work to find 6 notable songs from 2020-2022. I suspect his job would have been a lot easier for 1966-1968.
facts
"There'd Better Be A Mirrorball" by Arctic Monkeys had charted in the UK top 40 recently! It's an amazing and interesting song. It really shows how they keep evolving themselfs and that they do not care the slightest about what music is considered popular.
It's ehhhh
'Music' is being polite. I'm a massive AM fan but I'd describe everything from Tranquility Base onwards an Ego Trip potentially with some melodies
@@DaniloSilva-pl3sq He said from TBHC onwards
@@DaniloSilva-pl3sq I said TBHC onwards
ngl I can agree on this, (although being an arctic monkeys fan myself) Alex literally keeps you engaged through a long and continuous portion of the song alinged with the repeating soothing piano that helps it blend together. However, I think he kinda just fell off at the end of it. Don't get me wrong, the violins' dynamics were beautiful but his falsetto just didn't do it justice. It wasn't as powerful as required and just left you sitting there expecting more. It didn't reach the mark that 505 left us with its drop. Yes, he could still utilise falsetto just like if you look at "the adults are talking" by the strokes which ends so well and showcases what they needed. It's funny though because quoting Star Treatment, "[he] just wanted to be one of the strokes". I'm hoping the rest of The Car does well and listening to "I ain't quite where I think I am", its sounding really good and just gets you going.
I am italian and I loved you included Maneskin! Also hearing your pronunciaton of"Zitti e buoni" was fun 😂
🤣
Zi iti e Bueni mi ha fatto molto ridere
Stromae's songs did not chart in US or UK (they did in other European countries), but Sante and L'enfer are both amazing songs. Cheers.
Amazing (and alternative in so many meanings) artist.
agreed, include formidable too
L’enfer gives me chills
Dua Lipa's last album 'Future Nostalgia' is a great album that has a cohesive theme, great singing, production. She's a gem.
My favorite pop album of 2021
Yaaaasssss she is the best
my favourite pop album ever
@@Symphonicrockfran It's from 2020
absolutely agree with the Sam Fender shout. gorgeous songwriting, incisive lyricism and, on top of it all, just an all-round lovely guy. been listening to him for years now, and watching him go from strength to strength has been a real joy. ‘Seventeen Going Under’ and his second album this past year really solidified his name here in the UK; feel like if he nails the right sound for his next record, he can crack the American market like Arctic Monkeys and the 1975 did a few years back.
Willow Smith definitely channeling some Lorde vibes with her vowel sounds.
Eminem dissed Machine Gun Kelly so much in "Killshot" that he ditched rap and turned into male Avril Levine.
I'm still confused as to how this video hasn't got 1000 fat metal dads from the south of USA attacking David for supporting MGK yet, but I'm kinda happy to see it, that or his audience are just brits and couldn't care less
The Willow Smith song reminded me of Cocteau Twins... was it Heaven or Las Vegas? One of them...
Cmon give Avril a little bit of credit
Avril Levine 😂
I've been really impressed with Måneskin. There are some videos of them busking in Rome and they look like they were still in high school. They grew so much between there and Eurovision and since Eurovision they seem to have grown a great deal more. Their music keeps getting better and their performances are always just pegged at 11! They have incredible energy on stage.
Really happy "Happier than Ever" made it on this list. The song really secured for me that Billie Eilish actually has some real songwriting chops and is not just another Item-of-the-day popstar.
"The only rock song I've ever heard in Italian". That's just because you ignore Italian rock scene both mainstream and underground: it's teeming with pure gems.
Can you give us newbies some pointers?
@@jeroenwarner4834 Sure. I'll leave mainstream rock/pop aside for now and I'll give you some songs from various bands (in capital) and genres so that you can go digging further into them according to your tastes.
Metal: LACUNA COIL - "Layers of time"; LINEA77 - "Inno all'odio"; NEGAZIONE- "Parole"; ESTREMA - "Child o' Boogaow"
Indie/alternative rock: MARLENE KUNTZ - "Retrattile"; TIMORIA - "Senza vento" - "Sole spento"; VERDENA - "Inno del perdersi"; AFTERHOURS - "Male di miele"; CSI - "Forma e sostanza"
Pop/Rock: SUBSONICA - "Disco Labirinto" - NEGRITA . "Mama Maè";
@@GiampietroDiSanto Grazie Mille!
I don't know if it was succesful in the US, but 'Santé' by Stromae is a great song with a fresh rhythmic idea that was very popular in french speaking countries
Not sure about highlighting individual songs but I found myself pleasantly surprised by a number of pop acts last year. In particular the albums by Self Esteem and Halsey. As my favourite pop song of the year was Japanese Breakfast's song Paprika, I think she deserves a mention as well.
Japanese Breakfast is great 😊
Halsey's album is really good, I was quite surprised. Since it's quite hard to recommend the artist that sang on 'Closer' to other people.
(NIN also did a song called 'Closer' coincidentally)
This is such a great song. Thank you!
self esteem is unbelievable
i personally think that lil nas x's album montero is an absolute pop gem. most songs on that are a great mix of genres that i really enjoy, and towards the end of the album there's life after salem which is one of my favourite rock ballads i've ever heard, and am i dreaming, which is probably the best ending to the album that he could have made
ZITTI E BUONI is such a great track!
“Songs I can just put up with… Ed Sheerhan” 🤣😂🤣 I actually laughed out loud
A quarter million people over 3 days at Wembley paid a lot of money to "put up" with ES and his loop pedal. Just sayin'
@@RichardFarley_ I am not sure the turn out is a true measurement of artistic integrity (also I not saying) 👍
Ed Sheeran was good prior to Shape of You. Ever since then it's been pretty rough
@@RichardFarley_ songs to put up with are exactly the kind of songs that fill up a stadium with a quarter million people
If I ever release an album I think I'll call it "Songs To Put Up With" 😄
Really glad that you recognised Zitti e buoni by Maneskin. Cause I personally love all their Italian songs! I voted for them on Eurovision haha
I voted for them too. We need more real rock, in the world and Eurovision.
I don't know if her work charts often but I think of Gone by Charli XCX to be an excelent pop song.
YES! I love Charli and the way she always push boundaries of pop music, and Gone is definitely one of her best works.
Joji - Glimpse of Us, Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky, Joy Crookes - When You Were Mine, Jessie Ware - Remember Where You Are, Celeste - Love Is Back, Hope Tala - All My Girls Like To Fight,
I recently discovered this band called Half•Alive that I honestly can't describe as anything but prog-pop. Sure, some of their music is pretty straightforward pop, but most is riddled with polyrhythms, polymeters, odd time signatures, and even what I want to call polytonality in their song "Ok ok?". Being the prog-metal fan I am, it's rare that I find a pop band that legitimately interests me, but these guys have blown my expectations out of the park. I definitely recommend giving their music a try if you haven't. Enjoy, and God bless! 😊
Here's the thing - when Måneskin's album was released here in Italy (and specifically Zitti e Buoni made them win Sanremo firstly and Eurovision secondly) I reviewed the whole thing and I thought "well, I don't know if there's a high chance of it happening, but if they ever became known outside the country, this song and I Wanna Be Your Slave would probably be two major hits of them".
It's been a year and a half, Zitti e Buoni ended up in the Billboard Global 200 and they now definitely have their ups and downs at best in terms of quality, but when it comes to those two songs, to me they still sound like proper pop rock bangers. Which is a thing that we have experienced before in Italy, but yeah, not that often compared to what one can usually find on the radio.
Totally agree with the rest of your choices, anyway especially Happier Than Ever, Death Bed, Blinding Lights, and Seventeen Going Under - all great tunes and songwriting imho -, tho I really struggle to stand MGK :')
P.s.: you went a bit Spanish when pronouncing the song title (it's "buoni", not "bueni" lmao) but it's ok anyway :D
Billie Eilish, Phoebe Bridgers, Olivia Rodrigo and Lizzy McAlpine have all released truly amazing albums in the past two years or so
I would love a part 2 of this!!! From the 80’s or early 2000’s or any era with music you think stands out!!!! I’m always looking for unique pop music and this is a great way to do it I love this video format. I would also love more music theory or technical explanation of what’s great about the production quality or chord progression or modal use of this music would be so amazing ❤❤❤
When I was told, "you don't like pop music because you're getting older", I thought about it for a moment and realized... I never liked pop music. The music I was listening to when I was in the prime demographics (teens, 18-35) wasn't pop music either. So the question isn't about finding stuff in the top-40, it's can I find new music that I still like? And yes, I can.
Sam Fender playing "Seventeen going under" at Glastonbury 2022 was terrific, and the crowd was highly engaged.
I would love to see you do more opinion based video. Given your musical background and your clear familiarity in music theory, I think your opinion carries some serious weight
Excellent, thank you for the upload, David.
Pop, like any genre, has hits and flops, in any era. It's common to suggest that pop sucks now but used to be great. Ha! I've been hearing that my whole life, and I'm old. Take an actual look at lists of most popular music for whatever year you think was a great year. The legendary 1967 opened in the US with 1. "I'm A Believer" (Great song, here we go!) 2. "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron,"(wait, what?) 3. "Winchester Cathedral" (is this some kind of joke?)
The reason music sounded better long ago is: A. Nostalgia, B. Lack of willingness to listen to new music with care, as this video argues against, and C. Selective memory. We all remember "Good Vibrations." You know, the song that was 11 spots behind "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron."
you should really take a look into the indie rock/pop, bedroom pop scene also. a lot of genuine hidden gems are in this genre. the amount of talent and thought put into every song is quite amazing actually. i.e Rex Orange County, Boy Pablo, Bruno Major, etc. i hope one day the mainstream shed more light into these artists in the future.
Sam Fender is wonderful. I especially love Spit of You, such a great guitar riff
Most pop music isn't crap, it's just that rock more serious than Imagine Dragons ins't charting anymore, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. You could write a serious and emotional song in the style of today's pop music and there are many such songs that exist today, they just don't touch you (or maybe you can't even see them as good or seroius music) because you like the style of older rock music.
Finally a comment i can agree with! I see many people complaining that modern music is terrible without actually listening to it, then saying that "80's music is the best". They forget that bad music still existed back then. In my perspective, you don't have to like a song or artist to recognise that they are talented
You mentioned all great rock(ish) tracks that saw mainstream success pretty much. Hope we get to hear more of them coming!
I think it was one of your previous videos which mentioned Orla Gartland, whom I’d never heard until you mentioned her. I don’t know whether she charted in such a way as to qualify, but I was impressed and have become a fan.
I hope you still read the comments:
I really love the Cover of Suzanne Vega's Toms Diner from Giant Rooks and Annenmaykantereit, two German bands Giant Rooks singing in English, AMK usually in German. It reached 63 in UK and 78 in US but also went gold in US.
On Spotify they also now have way more streams than Suzanne.
"Here comes the night" by Agnes would be the single gem I'd add. 80's vibes, great vocal, absurdly good production, tune that's both distantly familiar but still feels fresh and on top of that: interesting, non trivial rhythm. Same qualities that brought first two entries of this list.
I’m always in the same boat of not listening to newer music, but I have started to get into more indi rock songs that are newer. To me, it’s the closest to older music with that new kind of feel.
for me, it all boils down what we consider pop. There is an ocean of wonderful pop music with many interesting concept, i.e. Rina Sawayama, Mitski, Jessie Ware, Carly Rae Jepsen (yes, Emotion is the album of the decade) or whole hyperpop genre. It can be really interesting in terms of production, composition and inspirations
Rina's Dynasty is magnificent. I think she's awsome.
Yep, Emotion was a great album
Thank you for putting in Boy. Voicenotes is a dramatically underrated album in my opinion.
All the singles were pretty good I think.
@@soaribb32 from Charlie Puth you mean?
I'm so glad you mentioned Måneskin❤️ I'm a Canadian living in the UK and saw the band this summer in Italy. I don't know Italian- but their songs are so good it doesn't even matter!
You made me discover maneskim! Amazing band I can enjoy while studying Italian. I was getting tired of opera, lol
3:35 Italy has had a great prog rock scene especially during the 1970s... but you can also check out the bands Negrita, Litfiba and Subsonica for italian rock.
I would really enjoy more content like this! I definitely think “all pop music is bad” is an… uneducated opinion. Maybe a follow up video with some other examples of great pop songs in recent years? Easing up on the qualifications (top 40 last 3 years) and coming from a music theory channel would help potentially broaden some people’s perspectives!
I'm a very big billie fan and I have to say the build up / switch between acoustic to electric guitar is amazing and it gets me so excited everytime I listen to it
Dua Lipa - Don't Stop Now, Break my Heart, Love Again
Her latest album, Future Nostalgia, was packed with well produced and catchy pop music.
Kanye West - Off the Grid.
I usually don't enjoy trap/drill music, but I find this one very enjoyable. The synth bass sound is incredible.
ABBA-Don't Shut me Down
This one is a contender for a being in my top 10 ABBA songs of all time, and I really didn't expect that to be possible when they announced their comeback. Just a very joyous, classic track from them, playing to their strengths.
Drake-Passionfruit
Bit of an older song, but I love its sparse and relaxing atmosphere. Sticks out like a sore thumb from Drake's other hits, most of which I don't care for at all - though Sicko Mode is also great.
And finally, a pop song which wasn't a hit, but really should have been: Carolina Polachek - So Hot You're Hurting my Feelings
Dua lipa definitely, i like how varied her style is
You’re the music expert so I’d love to agree with you on these songs, but then we’d both be wrong.
Space Song - Beach House
EARFQUAKE - Tyler the Creator
The Less I Know The Better - Tame Impala
Chamber of Reflections - Mac DeMarco
Get Lucky - Daft Punk
Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye
Little Dark Age - MGMT
And many more...
Nice to see this uploaded after the community post about it a while ago
I was stoked to see Zitti e Buoni on here. I've been learning Italian recently and this is one of the songs on constant rotation for me.
I'll give any song of any era and any genre a chance as long as it has genuine sparks of creativity and originality.
I keep stopping the video to open Spotify and add these to a playlist, they're so great!! As an American, I sincerely have never heard Sam Fender before, and that's such a shame.
I'd like to submit "The Funeral" by Yungblud, released in 2022 and charted #29 in the US, #80 in the UK, and #40 in New Zealand. The song feels like My Chemical Romance for a new generation, and listening to it is honestly some of the most fun I've had listening to a song in awhile. Also Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne feature in the music video!
I'd also like to posit "Numb Little Bug" by Em Beihold, also released in 2022 and definitely top 40 however you slice it (#25 on UK singles, #18 on Billboard US Hot 100, #1 Billboard US Adult Top 40). The lyrics I think perfectly capture the pandemic and post-pandemic Millenial/Gen Z mental state, and as a tuba player I love the deep piano riffs.
I knew that happier than ever would be on the list it is a very interesting peace of music.
I am working on a physics thesis about modern pop songs. And the research itself is an enlightenment to me, especially as a person that doesn't care about modern pop songs that much. I found some really good ones that I might have otherwise never discovered.
Lana Del Rey - Chemtrails Over The Country Club (2021, number 40 in UK).
In general I view Lana Del Rey to be one of the finest singer-songwriters of her generation, and for many years she's been open to some unusual structures and great poetry (highlights from past years include West Coast, The Greatest, Venice Bitch, Salvatore, This is What Makes Us Girls, Carmen).
Benee's really cool too... her song Supalonely was in the top 40 (though I do think the charts are kinda irrelevant now) not too long ago. Give her a listen if you haven't before! She does a cover of Somebody that I used to know which is pure 🔥🔥
LOVE THE SAM FENDER APPRECIATION 😊
I'd definitely say Declan McKenna, although only his single "Brazil" charted in the UK. However, his album "Zeros" did, so I'd pick "Be an Astronaut", absolutely great tune
Not in the charts today but i think Fireflies by Owl City is a great pop song too
If you want another absolutely fantastic pop-punk revival song, Willow (the female singer in Anxiety) has an absolutely fantastic song called Transparent Soul - with Travis Barker doing the drums!
If you're interested in discovering more Italian rock music, check out Verdena for something more alternative/grunge-y, and Premiata Forneria Marconi, which is probably the most successful and influential band out of the '70s Italian prog rock scene
When i saw the title, the first artist that i thought was The Weeknd. The vibe from the 80s is just so amazing, and i love to see some people reviving this. "After Hours" is probably one of my favorites albums from the last decade.
2:52 - as an Italian, the pronunciation of “Zitti e Buoni” had me in stitches 😂
That zitti e buoni pronunciation was just... Great
That's Lari Basilio in the THE ANXIETY video. A really great guitarist.
WFUV in NY has been playing Sam Fender’s song, so it’s definitely on the radar here.
Love that outro music.
I’m just pleased to see long pieces to camera which aren’t peppered with jump cuts every two seconds.
It’s great you mentioned Maneskin, as an Italian I enjoy following our endless debates about whether they are truly “rock” or not, but it’s not by chance that most serious musicians consider them as a genuine rock band. It’s true they became famous thanks to XFactor and then winning Sanremo and Eurovision, but they played before in Rome for years as buskers… btw if you want to listen to more Italian rock there are some good bands out there! Afterhours and Marlene Kuntz from the 90’s and 00’s, and more recently Verdena, Zen Circus, Teatro degli Orrori.. Thanks again for this video, great as usual
Blinding Lights got me thinking... Could you find a way to make a video about Max Martin and his songwriting or something, Sir David?
Nice picks. I agree that Billy Eilish is one of the best pop artists in a long time. In Spain we have two huge pop artists called Rosalía and C.Tangana who are IMO masterfully combining classic latin sounds with modern ones. Rosalía has a brilliant voice and C. Tangana has great collaborators. You can check their singles "saoko" and "tú me dejaste de querer", respectively, for example.
Back in the day people would have said Strawberry Fields and other songs of that time were crap, things were better in the 40s. Writing off all modern music, pop or otherwise is incredibly short sighted. I say the best time for music is always right now because we have today's music, as well as every single song released in the past.
Okay, when I was a child during the 60s, my grandparents disliked "that damn hippie music". But it wasn't because they thought it all sounded the same, or that it was just repeating old cliches from the past. They didn't like the screaming and all the "yeah yeah yeahs". They liked "Maggie May", "Heart of Gold" and other songs that were catchy and told a story. There was a genre of music then that was called "bubblegum pop". It was assembled by producers, using studio musicians and pretty faces for singers. That genre is akin to what we have now, only bubblegum pop died out. This stuff just keeps going and going...
Great Piece, as always...
I am curious. Going the opposite direction from this video, have you ever seen Pat Finnerty's channel? He does an amazing series called "what makes this song stink" I think you'd love it, at the very least, it will make you "laugh out loud"
My God if this is the cream of the crop, no wonder the planet is stuffed
Sam Fender is so good, it amazes me
Not a fan of the snarky title of this video, feels very unusual for your channel. but love all the song recommendations and everything else about the video!
David, check out 'All I want to hear' by the 1974 a nice traditional bluesy, soulful jam from an otherwise pop outfit.
By the way, right at the end, I think you meant banal not benign?
I don't expect a video out of this or anything, but I just really like the whole 2014 album from Lamp and I'm dying to have people listen to it.
The Eurovision Song Contest is NOT a singing contest. It‘s a SONG CONTEST. But the performance also is relevant of course.
You know Dave is British when he immediately describes Eurovision as “oddly politicised” 🙄
Great songs and so many more which could have been added. Liked the honourable mention of Charlie Puth. I always use 'Attention' as an example when I'm teaching as it is a great example of the effect that the addition and subtraction of instruments can have on the sound of the music.
Meet Me At Our Spot, Happier Than Ever, and Blinding Lights are all great
MGK, is that that heidbanger who's appearing on 7 October in Glasgow, a city that has had its own share of heidbangers over the years? Poor Sophie Lloyd, having to try and make her breakthrough with someone like him!
The very first time I listened to Happier than ever I was blown away, loved it
Early 2010s pop was iconic, especially the neo-Eurodance stuff (eg. Rihanna, Kesha, Usher).
I've found Christine and the queens writes some pretty good music
There has always been interesting, innovative music in the charts, but the problem is, people like simple songs. I have a fairly eclectic musical taste, but there are occasions when I just want to hear something like Hi Ho Silver Lining, because it's cheerful and easy to sing along with.
Ms. Eilish (forgive spelling) has some genuine talent, and tends to push the boundaries in the same way that Bjork did in my teenage years. Thanks for sharing these songs.
As always writing a comment to support the channel
if you want to listen to some cool rock music in italian consider checking out Verdena, in particular their self titled record "Verdena" from 1999
Totally get where you're coming from with these songs, and I agree that not all modern pop music is actually bad, but I really struggle to find much appeal in it. Modern pop, even if it contains real guitars and drums, just sounds like a big, generic wall of electronic noise to me. Maybe I'm just an elitist, but there you go.
Wet Leg are popular and great fun. Witty lyrics, good tunes.
"Rumors" by Lizzo is my favorite pop song in 10 years and it came out in 2021. There's also "This Hell" by Rina Sawayama if you count that as pop.
Plenty on the list I’ve never heard of. Interesting that these songs have “live” instrumentation rather than relying on programmed synths and loops. Perhaps that says something about David’s (and my) musical preference.
I’m probably a bit of a musical snob myself. I definitely tend to write-off a lot of new music as being a bit crap. But I do agree that Willow Smith and Billie Eilish are brilliantly talented artists. For me, it was Transparent Soul by Willow Smith that made me sit up and take notice (coincidentally another song featuring Travis Barker.) As for Billie Eilish, she has some absolutely incredible songs and some real stinkers with very little in between. Only a fool would write her off as a manufactured, industry plant though.
Another artist I’m becoming more and more impressed by is Harry Styles. Both Watermelon Sugar and As it Was are deceptively well written. On the face of it, they’re super simple, throwaway pop, but they’ve each got just enough easily-missed complexity to make them interesting after a few listens.
Billie Eylash is definitely not manufactured by the music industry, but that industry definitely has a penchant for opportunism. I assumed "bedroom producer" started out as a joke (what a term, huh? What if your studio was in the bathroom?) but it became a meme, an interview drinking game.
I like her ancient-school melodic and harmonic sensibilities. Older than old school. More like, Doris Day walking uphill both ways to a one-room schoolhouse, old school. But it works.
I wish that you added 'xs' by rina sawayama...the way she combined early 2000s britany/christina aguilera sound with nu-metal riffs is mind-blowing..... IT'S WORTH A LISTEN!!
Rina Sawayama's whole latest album is incredible. So is all of her first album.
I remember when my gen thought we discovered punk through Green Day when American Idiot came out. I feel like Maneskin is kinda like that for this generation and rock.
Sam Fender is great but I think the best song last year was “The Man Himself” by Gang of Youths. It has a drum and bass rhythm, orchestration, guitars, driving bass, South Pacific choir and a heart rending lead vocal. Their album “Angel in Real Time” is fabulous.
As for Eurovision being "oddly politicized" - well, that's by design. It's an annual contest taking place each year since 1956, and it is held between European countries (with some exceptions, as the admission criterium for the country is membership in the European Broadcasting Union, therefore we have there e.g. Israel, and a few Northern African countries are eligible too. A few years back Australia, being a huge fan of the contest, was invited as guest). It's politicized, because it's countries competing with one another - every country sends one song that represents it. It is watched by a few hundred thousand people each year. Think Super bowl, but international and with music instead of sports.
"few hundred thousand"? ESC 2021 is said to have had 183 million tv viewers
@@brdrnda3805 Of course. Few hundred MILLIONS, not thousand. A stupid slip of the mind.
Shout out for Aussie group Middle Kids, in particular their song Were the greatest. Saw turn open for Crowded House, they were fantastic.
