Bruh, I can't believe they timeskipped his mental breakdown.
Why couldn't we, at the very least, have half of the final episode show Steven signing up for therapy, starting a new healthy lifestyle, etc, etc?
Why bring up the topic of dealing with trauma without actually showing how to deal with trauma? I...what?

Wow, they really just glossed over the fact that YOU CAN RESTORE CLUSTER GEMS. Sarcastic incorrectly said it was just Gems Yellow shattered, but she was picking them off of fused Cluster gems. They really use that big revelation and barely pay it any mind just to show how nice Yellow is now. Crewniverse clearly regretted making White ambiguously redeemed in the movie and now they wanted to backpedal so we can't say they didn't deserve the redemption. Oh, she lets others control her. But...whhhhy? What does that actually do? Why would they just head over and be like "Hey, White, I wanna walk around in your body even though Yellow could make be big and powerful anyway in my own." Blue is the only one that makes sense, but because it's a no-brainer. She isn't sad and crying, so she doesn't make gems sad. And that's just what everyone assumed would be the case.

I know. Shattering was death but now yeah...healing powers is something not just Steven can do.
All diamonds can just plop shards back together.
Steven didn't need to do the tub thing with Jasper juy give her to yellow.

I thought putting these things together was complicated but no.

According to Rebecca Sugar of why she didn't bother to show Steven self-reflection because she wanted him to have privacy. She wanted us to know that he was getting help but she wanted him not to be pressured of being the show's protagonist anymore. That has to be one of the dumbest reasons for not showing Steven in therapy. She kept on showing Steven mentally breaking down in most of the episodes and yet she doesn't bother to show him getting help and taking steps? What kind of writing is that!?.

While the Diamonds are no longer threats, I still feel like we never got any real redemption from them..I think it’s obvious Peridot had the best redemption in the entire show since we saw her development over multiple seasons..I think that’s the issue with redeeming almost all of the villains, cus you won’t have enough time to do a multi season arc..the best they can do is make them sympathetic like they did with Spinel (she was done well) but it doesn’t feel earned by the diamonds since they were ruthless space tyrants that shattered gems..idk for some reason when they were talking about how they’ve changed (especially white & yellow) it felt hollow like it wasn’t really earned..I liked the show & ending regardless so🤷🏽‍♀️

notdlyer is link no I hate future, Steven universe in its self is fine but future feels like a pointless epilogue series and the writing is just that it felt like they gave up, that’s what hurt as a fan to see in future it felt like Steven being punished even though this was the epilogue, it felt like Steven was regressing as a character and everyone else felt if they had lost their character and regained it through out this season giving me and I would think others whiplash. I hate future for turning Greg into unresponsive father, I hate it for torturing Steven and making him feel like a monster, I hate future for a episode that was basically a psI video, I hate Future for making everyone except so much with so much hope only to full them from their fit into a trap, I hate that after the whole diamond arc that it could return to form but instead it just shattered expectation in the worst possible way and that optimists keep wearing their rose tinted glasses.
I don’t hate Steven universe it was a show worth watching and I was in the community during season one and I still believe it deserves a place in animation history but not the rank of avatar more like this decades invader ZIM kooky weird with a likable cast and worth remembering.

I disagree. Every recovery, especially in real life, starts with a moment like this, when everything breaks down, theres nothing of you left and the only thing is someone hugging you and telling you youre a good person. Because at that moment, you cant think positively about yourself, someone else has to do it for you. Maybe to someone whos never hit rock bottom before that wouldnt make sense, but to someone whos seen a lot of it, it makes all the sense in the world.
I see why it looks like a cheesy hollywood spectacle to some, but as a cartoony metaphor for that moment it works quite well. It was never gonna show Steven going through all his experiences with a therapist because it would detract from the broad scope of the metaphor by narrowing it down to the non-relatable specifics of his trauma. i.e Noone can relate to being trapped in a bubble in space with a murderous ex soldier who hates you because of your mom.

If the ending resonated with someone or resonated with you. Great. Really I'm glad it did. I like the overall message that the season was trying to convey and that it took the chance to take a psychological look at Stevens mental health.
But the ending did not work for me. Kinda the same reason as this summary. It was just so cheesy , the message contradicted itself and had so much crying in the wrong places.

I don’t think the scene with everyone crying was supposed to be the darkest scene in the show. The end of Everything’s Fine took that spot. I thought the Diamonds overdoing the crying was intentional, so Connie could just tell everyone to shut up. Also, keep in mind that the entire story is done from Steven’s perspective until he turns into the monster. WD even says “Thats not Steven anymore!”, so that’s the reason for the tone shift. Also, I appreciate that the hug itself wasn’t the reason for his healing, it was the tears. Pretty creative way to play off the whole hug scene. Still respect your opinion though.

It was *clearly* a jab at parents that make their children's problem all about *them* and only makes things worse instead of focusing on helping. It IS supposed to be ridiculous, stupid, and comically dramatic because parents who do that ARE ridiculous, stupid, and comically dramatic.

And the scene still served an important purpose. If that scene *wasn't* completely ridiculous, it wouldn't make sense for Connie to step up and say "Yeah you messed up, now shut up and help HIM". It simply would not work if Spinel and White reacted the same way the others did. it would just make Connie look like a jerk who dismissed their feelings. It would not have the same impact.
We were *supposed* to be annoyed at them for being so overly dramatic in such a tense moment, because that's exactly what it looks like when a kid is having a panic attack while their parents are making the problem about themselves.

See but you can't let Steven "take his time" with expressing what's wrong with him when his subpar written issues result in the endangerment of others. Letting Steven take his time took over the tv broadcast, broke Bismuth's anvil, destroyed a city block, and KILLED someone. I think the crewniverse had an idea as to where they wanted the series to go and the kind of reactions they wanted to evoke, but had no proper idea as writers on how to get there. I'm gonna say it straight: Steven's trauma and issues felt incredibly fabricated to initiate negative character interactions and spark a falling arc for Steven that didn't feel genuine. The longer you think about anything in the show the less it all makes sense. His fear that his friends and Connie are leaving? Stupid: He had a lion that can warp him anywhere on earth and can climb out of Lars's head whenever he wants. Mounting fear over all the trials he faced? Possible, but he literally handled everything in stride in SU and they're only now making things an issue because A: Steven's character is regularly morphed to fit the situation, not an actually well built character B: They wanted to ham fist a mental health message along with their ham fisted sexuality and gender messages, and C: Without forging fake tension, SUF wouldn't even be able to exist. Clearly the longer you analyze the series the more things make less and less sense, but they don't care because SU and SUF are marketed towards children who do not think in the abstract. They don't analyze, they simple gush over "representation" and "OMG THEY KISSED WHAT A MOMENT!" while crying in their Cheeseburger Backpacks.

Like the trail, he was stranded on an alien planet trying to kill him and he watched his friend die and resurrect, but when he gets back home he’s not negatively effected by anything that happened he was only concerned about Connie not talking to him. Where’s the trauma? Also why would Steven not talk about his problems with the Gems, Steven is hyper emotional and never hid his feelings and emotion from his family and friends before so why would he now only to progress this mental illness plot. The crew seems to sacrifice character and logic to progress the plot that they think is cool. Like you said the show gets worse the more you think about it

I'd love the hug if the Diamonds weren't in it. Because two episodes ago we saw how just being around White could induce a panic attack! Because they're all a primary source of his trauma, so physical contact from them is a terrible idea! If they had contributed to Steven's healing by learning to stand away from him, and acknowledging his TRUE family, it would have been a great end to their arc. Instead, even though they're sincerely worried about him, it feels like they're just trying to fill the Pink-shaped holes in their lives.

    My BIGGEST problem with SUF
If you're gonna try to tell a serious story about mental illness, this was not the show to tell it with.
The show that constantly has non real world problems be solved with kindness and happiness and friendship, to the point that an intergalactic fascist regime was taken down essentially by hugging it out and talking about your feelings.
And the fact that many characters were presumed dead had comeback, now the emotional and physical stakes of the show are undermined.
This show tries to be a deconstruction of steven universe, but in actuality shows alot of hypocrisy in the shows writing and really shows how SU really has some problems that I feel the fanbase wouldn't have recognized as horrible if the show didnt straight up go "This used to be good but now this is bad, and we're gonna keep telling you it's bad.
And I'm not even shocked because the show always decides to retroactively harm itself like what it did with Rose/Pink Diamond. She was shown as this wonderful and great character but then the show goes out of it's way to completely destroy her character and make her a VILLIAN!
People were saying that because of the movie it's hard to rewatch steven universe because of spinel, rewatching SU after future is gonna be almost impossible for alot of people. Everytime you see steven being happy or solving the issues with kindness and going through shit unscathed, you'll be reminded that "This isnt a happy moment this is just adding to his eventual mental breakdown. All these characters are awful because they're encouraging him to do this and are gonna just abandon him later."
Way to ruin your own show Crewniverse

Finally! Someone finally gets how bad the finale is. I was actually excited to see how this would all conclude with the final 4 episodes but it ended up becoming the biggest waste of time in the entire season. It could have been done so much better but oh boy, with all of the time that was wasted I literally got furious by the time the crying scene happened.
I believe a lyric from a song sung by Sarah Stiles says it best: "there's a fine fine line, between love and waste of time..."
I swear things were better off when it seemed as if the movie was gonna be the actual conclusion. Because sure the story of this season and some of the conclusions were good but we were left with several other leaving questions left by this season with no possible chance of a answer with even alot of the loose ends this series said to tie up not even being concluded. Plus even the story had such a awful conclusion that it makes me wish we never even got this series since atleast I would leave the series behind with a nice close towards the series despite the loose ends.

So...like...great that Steven is doing better and going on his little life's journey to find himself, but...what about all those plant hims running amok? What about all the other plot holes they left us? They made it a point to have an episode showing that there are still gems out there in the Universe destroying planets(the two Lapis), so who's going to stop that? Actually, I don't really care, because the show doesn't care anymore; Steven's got his happy ending, so everything's good!
I'm really glad this series is finally over, it felt like every season was digging deeper and deeper into mediocrity.

    • @XDarkEcho
      @XDarkEcho 4 роки тому +9

@King's Rampage Well the thing about the Legend of Korra, it was an unnecessary continuation, that I don't think anyone ever asked for. The original ended perfectly fine, wrapped up everything in a proper manner, except that mention of Zuko's mom, which was handled in a comic, but other than that I don't think there were any kind of plot holes or contrivances.
I don't know if Legend of Korra fans, or Avatar:Last Airbender fans in general, wanted lore on the creation of bending or the first Avatar, since bending has always been explained fairly well and never needed a deeper dive into. I get it, some things don't need explanation other than what they've got already, but Avatar already established most of their lore, world, and rules so early on and stayed consistent throughout.
My problem with Steven Universe, they make out everything to have some meaning or another down the line, but in the end doesn't mean anything or ever talked about again. I call them plot holes, but maybe I'm just being nitpicky; but have these established characters, rules, and lore and most times never goes anywhere till at the last moment always bothered me. Why have an episode about Eyeball and Blue-Tear-British gem(I forgot her name) thing, causing trouble and claiming to get their revenge on Steven, making them seem like they'll be a reoccurring villain, only to scrap them the rest of the season? Why have an episode acknowledging there are still Gems out there destroying planets, but it's never mentioned to again or even how it'll be dealt with(creating a task force of sorts)? And yeah, Lapis stopped them, but she only did it because Steven was there; would she have even gone to that planet in the first place without Steven?
The show has all this so called lore and worldbuilding, but rarely feels like it does anything with it, or it doesn't impact the world itself; other than things like corrupted Gems(which they've been fighting since day one anways), the Crystal War, and the Diamonds for the most part. Everything else, doesn't matter in the least; the Cluster was an important plot point, mainly for the redemption arc for Peridot though, but Beach City episodes, getting to know the residents, only Lars and Sady were the only prominent characters that mattered story-wise.
I wasn't expecting this to be such a rant, haha, but there's just too many distracting inconsistencies, to me at least.

They criticize because at how much they're passionate about the show, and could she potential in it.
But you probably still ask, "Why still watch it then, when it's going downhill?" and I'll say to you, "Because I still have a slimmer of hope that it could be good again." It's like, watching your grandparent, whom you remember loving and having fun with as a child, eventually becoming ill and lose sight of who you are or who they were, and their suffering becomes more apparent as you grow old and more aware. XDarkEcho you are right on both fronts. Full of plot holes, but the show gave up on caring or the potential to be great years ago

I like that we see how the diamonds are trying to make up for their horribleness by helping people but we should have seen that earluer, not at the finale.

When it came to watching SUF, I felt as though the organization and how the story should've progressed would start with a summary of the time skip but add what occured in the doctor visit. Have Connie's mom examine him after experiencing the weird metamorphis and Steven explain all that occured since.
She explained all the things he's gone through as a child that was repressed in helping the gems and saving beach city. The physical, mental, and emotional trauma that nobody ( not even someone as young as Steven) should've gone through. His body had gotten accustomed to it being the norm.
Now that the external threat is no longer, those repressed stress and trauma are now starting to bleed out. Making the outburst he showed to Connie and Greg be the first to witnesses the aftereffects.
A focus on the internal (psychological) and external (social) aspects would've been a better fit for this if done properly.

Man I was so angry when all of Steven’s trauma was just handled with a hug. People dealing with trauma and depression need more than a hug especially when they have self-worth issues like Steven because just telling them they’re worth more than they think isn’t enough. Not showing Steven getting help through therapy and medication is just so stupid.

0:26 bro same. I've heard almost every fan who watched the finale and cried, to me I wasn't crying at all it just felt unearned and kind of rushed. In my mind I was like this doesn't feel touching enough to get me emotional.

I agree with your views. I liked the show well enough in general, but Future didn't get its "realistic/darker" tone to stick with me.
Steven having trauma and trouble relating to others sounds reasonable. What I find hard to believe is that none of the gems, Steven's friends, dad, girlfriend, ANY of the close, supportive, loving relationships Steven has forged during his formative years could tell that he needed help, and even when they kind of did, it was glossed over somehow. At the same time, Steven is intent on isolating himself no matter what.
I'm not saying this sort of plot can't or shouldn't happen, but its execution feels forced, darkness for its own sake. I had trouble getting invested in Steven's plight, even though I wanted to. It felt...kind of hollow.
Still, all gems have their flaws, right? I have lots of good times to remember this show by. But perhaps it should have ended earlier.

I have an idea of why Ruby and Sapphire have separate lives in Future - first, they were fused for a long time because Rose Quartz said to, then because baby Steven was afraid of them when they unfused, so they were afraid to unfuse, but then they found out Rose Quartz was pink diamond, so they probably decided, because they are married, they don't have to be together every moment to still love each other and be connected. So I think it's nice they decided to have different lives sometimes.
Also about fusion in general, I think gems do lose themselves when fused for a long, long time. In the episode with Sugalite, Pearl says they are at risk of losing themselves if they don't unfuse. When Steven's gem gets taken out, he looks desperate to get his gem power back. Since he is a fusion between Greg and Rose, Rose is effectively gone. Jasper was desperate to fuse back with Lapis, so much that she was willing to corrupt herself, and Lapis said she missed being fused with Jasper, and was afraid to lose herself to fusion again.
(BTW, even though Jasper didn't understand fusion and fused for the wrong reason, Lapis was still the one who forced Jasper to stay fused when Jasper didn't want to, so I'm still team Jasper for that reason)

I never read the hug as all his mental anguish and trauma being resolved. He's hidden all these feelings and doesn't want to talk about it with everyone because he's worried he'll hold them back from the things they want to do, or he's worried they'll have a lesser opinion of him and leave him because of how ugly these thoughts are. The hug was letting Steven know that all that doesn't matter and no one is going anywhere no matter what he's going through. Then from there he feels comfortable confiding in everyone the kinds of things he's been going through. the trauma isn't gone he can just deal with it better.

Jasper should have stayed shattered. It would have had a much bigger impact to the story and Steven's mental state (proving that he in fact can't fix everything). But also, it makes no sense why they revived her, considering she has no further development post-un-shattering. All she does is basically bow to steven, but it would have been a much bigger blow for him to realise some things are unfixable and that he just permanently killed someone, than being compared to his mother which everyone has already been doing since basically the beginning of the show.

I thought it was a good ending.
I didn't cry, because why should I? There's nothing like Steven Universe out there, but the show doesn't magically disappear once it ends, I can still rewatch it if I want to. Besides, the Crewniverse confirmed that they're interested in revisiting this universe sometime.
The one thing about Future that bothered me was, even with all of these new characters, all of the callbacks and new potential plot-threads, it's still all about Steven. That said, I liked the way they handled Steven's arc, because it felt like a natural conclusion of his character arc from the previous series.

there were moments in the finale that I totally related to, with the group all rushing to hug Steven when he was a monster.. I related it to a point where I had been raging, feeling like I was a monster and then my family coming in, hugging me, and saying how it wasn't the case. Sometimes a hug and some words are what you really need to leave that mind set and finally let out those tears of anguish and relief.
Though yeah, seeing all the gems freaking blaming themselves (especially White)..... I was cringing and legit had to skip over it because White reminded me of a family member that would guilt-trip me by saying 'this is all my fault' and it would seriously make me think that I put too much onto them.

Admittedly, I had a similar reaction to yours when I saw the finale. I mean, I'm not a fan, I just casually watch the show cause I bonded with my little brother over it. But I couldn't help but feel like the episode was hyped up only to hand out disappointment. The Being Human song was great though.

Honestly, I'm gonna have to agree with you, I don't really have much opinion on episodes 17,and 18, but 19, and 20 are the ones that just dumbfound me. The way Steven gets corrupted is the most rushed and stupid thing. Instead of something could've really been impactful and shocking and just all around awesome. Instead the episode just plays Stevens mental breakdown as a joke, and like you said with the scene where the gems are blaming themselves for what happened, yeah, I was rolling my eyes for so long that they probably did a 3960° (and the 3960° isn't a typo) and corrupted Steven getting uncorrupted by a goddamn hug just better shows one of my problems with the series as a whole. How the villain plotlines are completely forgotten about like with Cactus Steven, Bluebird, ECT. The intro made it seem like they would have some kind of key element to Future but they get one episode and are completely forgotten about for the rest of the series, and as for episode 20? Yeah, the reason the gems were pretending to not cry about Steven leaving was really stupid, made even stupiderer with the extremely corny diologue, and Steven leaving beach city just confused me. WHERE IS HE GONNA LIVE!? HOW IS HE GONNA GET A JOB THAT CAN PAY THE BARE MINIMUM FOR HIS RENT!? ITS ALREADY HARD ENOUGH TO GET A MINIMUM WAGE JOB WITHOUT GOING TO COLLEGE, STEVEN HAS NEVER EVEN BEEN TO SCHOOL IN HIS LIFE PERIOD!! Yeah, I also don't have really strong opinions on these episodes either (at least I don't think so) but I just felt like saying MY cooypaste shit that everyone is saying about this finale.
*Edit* :I realised I didn't elaborate on how I thought the show was rushed so basically my opinion is that the show didn't have enough episodes to show it's full colors. I'm pretty sure even if you took out the filler episodes then I still don't think 20 episodes is enough. They horseshoed in all the important plotlines in only one episode and it was just infuriating. It's ashame because I did still have some faith in the show before... "The Finale"
