I'm from D.C. and I vividly remember watching the first airing of this back in 1986. It was aired on the same day that Lefty publicly announced that he was stepping form U-MD and Channel 4 news played this as a tribute. RIP. I do hope that he and Bias have reunited somewhere.

I grew up in the 70's on "TOBACCO ROAD" Lefty gave the ACC personality

Lefty was a graduate from Duke. That "aw shucks act" was that. An act. The Len Bias tragedy will always follow him, but he was great coach.

But I thought that it was so unfair the way he was scapegoated him for the Len Bias tragedy

Being from Virginia, I was in Maryland working when Coach Lefty came to the University of Maryland in 1969.😊
He did everything that he could do to make the Terps a feared team to play against.
    RIP COACH LEFTY 🙏.
May the Peace of Christ be with his family during their time of grief 😔.

Thank You for the upload of this interview of 'Lefty' Driesell with a very special sportscaster, George Michael
    [Both am very familiar with]
Remember well the occurrence of Len Bias' death, after the NBA draft.
Also attended U of M 1977-1981, graduated, and saw the many players mentioned [and others] in this video. Attended the game as a student, and saw Len Bias play in 1981 Md vs Notre Dame, sink the last second shot to win [as a freshman].
Also saw Greg Manning sink the game winning shot in 1980 vs Notre Dame too, along with the ACC victory that year with that fantastic team which included Larry Gibson, Buck Williams. Who did not know of 'Lefty' having recruited and gotten the agreement of Moses Malone to play for U of M, then accepted to be drafted into NBA instead.
Coach Driesell was fantastic, and lifted U of M to of the highest levels in the ACC and nation, along with coaches who followed in each of the ACC Universities to become one of the best, competitive basketball conferences in NCAA Division I.
Sadly, for Univ. of Maryland, the athletic department, and sports teams, it seems they needed a 'scapegoat' and Coach Driesell did not continue.Certainly by now Coach Driesell would probably have retired as Dean Smith and others coaches from that time.
However, who would know what more he could have achieved within the time period and possibly brought even a National Championship?!
Sad, Very Sad :(( how administrators do not do enough to have through investigations, problem solving and solutions. They probably still have not instituted proper and necessary framework, structure, guidance and counselling to protect the students. Ultimately, the responsibility is within each individual. Lern Bias along with his associates made a serious mistake, that resulted in loosing his life at such a young age. Maybe with more guidance, counsel, information and a better group association he would have made better choices.
For this, the athletic and sports department should take responsibility to find improvements, solutions for athletes to make better choices, as actually all of the student population.
    Sincerely,
    :-)
