The “I wish...” “I know...” exchange to me is the most emotional moment in the show for me. All throughout the show, the characters have frivolous wishes based on what they think will give them a better life. This is the first time we get a wish from sorrow with Little Red Riding Hood wanting her mother back. Cinderella has also lost her mother and knows that pain. Such a great character interaction.

So...is no one gonna talk about how this musical has a Found Family element?
The Baker lost his Wife, Jack lost his Mother, Little Red lost her Granny and Cinderella grew up in an abusive household. As all these tragedies unfold, they mend those broken bonds with each other after supporting one another through the Giantess' rampage, and decide to stay together to help care for the Baker's son.

My daughter, now 26, played the Baker's Wife when she was in ninth grade. I did not know the play especially the ending. When she came out to sing the finale I lost it and felt a gut punch. My wife had passed when our daughter was eight. It had (and has) been just her and I since the passing of her mother. I watched every one of her performances but I have not been able to ever watch this play again. The ending hits way to close to home.

100% agree. There are amazing moments in this performance that they took out of the movie. Examples? Bakers dance when getting the bag of money from his dad. Witches "snununununu" when saying snail- only scène I thought that was rather true to the original was Agony, and even that off a bit-

This comment is for the future: As of right now the Corona Virus is a big thing and my senior show was Into The Woods, I was Jack. Yesterday, the show was cancelled and school was closed for the rest of the year. This song is the first song I listened to when I got the news and I cried, this song means the world to me. It meant a lot to me before the show was cancelled because it's so meaningful to the characters and has such a good message but now it means even more to me. No one is..alone.

I think my favorite line of this song is “you move just a finger, say the slightest word. Something’s bound to linger, be heard” because of how true that is. We all impact those we meet in ways we may never understand but it brings back to the point of everyone matters which I guess during their lowest point without their mothers it’s important to remind them of that

    • @gipadonimus
      @gipadonimus Рік тому +1

This song has always moved me, even more so lately since my mother and fathers passing these last two years.
The lyrics you quoted baffle me, and in a really frustrating way. I relate in the sense that every time I speak my mind genuinely it's always an "I wish this was etc." From the biggest picture to the little things now. I wish my parents were still alive. I wish I had more time with them. I wish a lot, about a lot and it's all I can even think to do. The lyrics "something's bound to linger, be heard" are something that I really wish I could figure out now. I shouldn't force it but it drives me crazy :/
Hearing your take on it is nice, and makes me wonder if I'm overthinking it because of everything. My only conclusion is to stop wishing and start expressing what I do have now.

This is the most authentic believable pairing of Cinderella and Red Riding Hood... And it is down to these two wonderful performances of these actresses.... Their chemistry of someone who's had a little more life experience and hardships... Giving comfort to a young girl and allows her to cry her grief through the song... Sorry but outshines all versions....

While all are wonderful in this cast, it’s Danielle Ferland as Little Red that gets me the most. From hearing her choke out “I wish”-the phrase, as @OrangeXenon54 says, we’ve heard over and over again, only now with the implication that Red’s wish is truly impossible (to bring back the dead)-to watching her stare, broken with grief and silently sobbing, to slowly joining the song and letting Cinderella comfort her...Ferland is so good at the comic aspects of the character, even in darker moments (...“you can talk to birds?”), that seeing her totally break down here is all the more gut-wrenching. What a performance.

Into the Woods : the entire point of this song is that there are no objectively good or bad people, we are all members of society and can take responsibility for our actions while still recognizing that we are products of inter generational trauma. No one ACTS alone , we are cursed and blessed to reverberate out from the careless actions of our parents and in turn can also thoughtlessly impact the lives of the future generations, but it’s okay, just deal with it one day at a time.
People watching the show as children: Amen no one is alone because god is with us

The first version of Into the Woods that I saw was the Disney movie version. I hated it--I thought the songs sounded bad, the acting was cheesy, and the story dragged on longer than it should have.
My high school musical this year is Into the Woods. I was really apprehensive to audition because of the movie--I auditioned anyway and I'm performing as the Witch in three weeks. I watched and listened to the Broadway recording and the plot began to make sense, and I picked up on the metaphors and parallels.
Sondheim really is a musical genius--I'm glad I gave this show a chance.

    Mother cannot guide you
    Now you're on your own
    Only me beside you
    Still, you're not alone
    No one is alone, truly
    No one is alone
    Sometimes people leave you
    Halfway through the wood
    Others may decieve you
    You decide what's good
    You decide alone
    But no one is alone
    I wish...
    I know.
    Mother isn't here now
    Wrong things, right things
    Who knows what she'd say?
    Who can say what's true?
    Nothing's quite so clear now
    Do things, fight things
    Feel you've lost your way?
    But--
    You decide, but
    You are not alone
    Believe me,
    No one is alone
    No one is alone
    Believe me
    Truly
    You move just a finger
    Say the slightest word
    Something's bound to linger
    Be heard
    No acts alone
    Careful
    No one is alone
    People make mistakes
    Fathers
    Mothers
    People make mistakes
    Holding to their own
    Thinking they're alone
    Honor their mistakes
    Fight for their mistakes
    Everybody makes
    One another's terrible mistakes
    Witches can be right
    Giants can be good
    You decide what's right
    You decide what's good
    Just remember
    Just remember
    Someone is on your side
    Jack, LRRH:
    Our side
    Baker, Cinderella:
    Our side
    Someone else is not
    While we're seeing our side
    Jack, LRRH:
    Our side
    Baker, Cinderella:
    Our side
    Maybe we forgot
    They are not alone
    No one is alone
Hard to see the light now

It's a Sondheim, I chose my own words succinctly, perhaps poetically, trying to achieve the maximum with the minimum. The bakers wife is for the streets. It seemed so weird that they have her have an affair with one of the princes, shrug it off, and die. Then she sings over her husbands shoulder in the afterlife? Okay lol

for me the film version is better because of a tighter performance but red has the best emotional response here out of this cast and the film cast and its amazing

Have you actually seen the stage performance of this production??? Miles times better than the movie.
