      Wow, I just finished reading the book today, and said the exact same thing to my friend 😂
      I can't see them as teenagers, it really does not seem believable. Thinking of them as a bit older helps to solidify their past much better, makes it seem much more meaningful and like it brings bigger stakes.

    i love "joking Kaz" cause i totally picture him being 100% serious when he says it, like you don't know if he's joking, and it's the only time he actually feels 17. But i imagine him to be at least 20. what bothers me most is in YA when the characters are 16-17 and they're constantly saying "for years i'd been doing..." and it makes it feel like the characters are only teenagers so you can call the book YA. That's maybe my only complaint about this duology.

      Carol E Yesss the times that Kaz actually says something funny is when I can kinda see him as a teen, cuz for the rest of the book he is killing people and being a criminal lord, so it’s nice to see him acting “silly”, even if it’s just a little

  • @apoorvajangale9667
    @apoorvajangale9667 5 років тому +76

    Yesss this book was diversity done rightt and everyone has accepted the characters to be a little older. I kinda forgot about the grey morality stuff being so awesomely done in these books (I read it 2 years ago) but yes that was good stuff.

    I went into Six of Crows with no expectation, so I was somewhat okay with the slower beginning and character work (in fact, a re-read made me realize that the ending was almost too fast in comparison). That said, this book does have pacing issues, and that's why I ended up liking Crooked Kingdom much better. It starts off with a bang right off the bat, and some of the underdeveloped characters (Jesper, Wylan) get fleshed out way more. It's a given among the fandom that the sequel is a definite step up from Six of Crows, so I think you'll enjoy it. :)

  • @roselightz_3027

    I age them up too! The characters are 1 or 2 years younger than me and I get that they all had to grow up quickly, but I just don't see anyone my age ever behaving like them...well maybe Wylan, but Kaz or Inej? No way!

  • @ruchikacalton2424

    The thing I love about these books is that while there is magic and magical conflicts in the world the character arcs are built around real world problems - trauma, gambling, addiction, racism, propaganda brainwashing, disabilities - not only do they make the world feel real but are things teens would encounter in the real world and the way its resolved really sends good message ALONG WITH being an extremely well written and fun story. Can't wait for you to read book 2!

    I actually really enjoyed the flashback because they let me understand the characters a lot more and I felt "closer" to them. It's one of the few books where ALL main heroes are brilliantly done. Usually I always have one character which I dislike or I feel like I don't care about them (because they weren't explored enough) but NOT with this one. I LOVE them all.

    I LOVED SoC and Crooked Kingdom so much, those characters felt more real to me than any other characters I've read so far, I love them all SO much. SoC did so much that normally puts me off a book, including flashbacks, yet I devoured it and those aspects were actually assets in the end, definitely a sign of how well written it is!
    Their ages could definitely have been older, but I personally put it down to them having aged a lot due to the horrific experiences they'd had and how independent they had to become so young. Look at the contrast in Wylan, for example..

  • @gillesm8963
    @gillesm8963 5 років тому +11

    The fact that they're young and have such backstory is not a problem, due to their environment, I think it's believable that they grow faster, further and stronger that any youth we can compare on (in our time and country and so the standard we pick whitout thinking). Of course they're exceptionally intelligent and capable (not too much though) but their background precisely explain why and How wich is well done. Therefore I've no problem to stick with their real age, especially when you know that they make mistake and that there is area where they can be immature, childish and act like late teenager (wich they're). they're just in advance because they live in a hard world, that beat them senseless and they still manage to survive on their own. And in the end, I also think than teenager can be the most surprising sometimes, their ability to believe that they can accomplish everything is amazing and tend to make them try things that adults will not even consider (or not anymore) :-D

    You described my thoughts about the writing so well! I was hesitant starting it out because I could tell the flashback narrative wasn't a one time thing, that most of the book is like that, and the pacing seemed slower- but I was surprised to come to really enjoy the characters and the writing style turned more from a con to a pro
    Oh my goodness, the age thing (as I see several other people think too)! Absolutely. Even beyond all that they have gone through in their lives and the crazy stakes and intensity they go about their lives in, the dialogue- especially Kaz- he sounded like we was speaking as a morally grey and wise 60 year old man sometimes lol
    So looking forward to what you think of Crooked Kingdom!

    The gray characterization of the book impresses me more than its plot. I mean, I give 5 stars to its plot even it reminds me of Ocean's Eleven but I seem to love the characters more. Kaz, Inej, Nina, Jesper, Matthias, Wylan roll the plot forward. Kudos to the Dregs!

      I made that mistake and I ended up not caring about Six of Crows at all. But I’m not sure if it was because I didn’t understand the lore, or because I didn’t connect with the characters. They felt like caricatures, like they look the way they do, say lines and act the way the author knows will make YA readers love them (which I hate because it feels very malevolent) - especially Kaz. Kaz is like the YA reader’s boyfriend: a dark, damaged, daring dandy with a mystery. Plus that will they won’t they thing...eh? The backstories are kind of...meh? The grey morality aspect is like a watered down style of what I love reading about, like in Name of the Wind or Ender’s Shadow, or Vin. And I didn’t care about the heist, it felt like the author was imagining the movie already while writing the whole thing. I will still be rereading this at some point since I’ve finished the Grisha trilogy, so I hope my opinions change!

    I am typically not a big fan of flashback chapters, but I had no qualms for this one. I thought they were done smoothly and at points in the story where it made sense to explain the things that were revealed in the flashbacks. The thing that typically bothers me with flashbacks is that they are often just thrown in there randomly, jarring you out of the present day story. Leigh Bardugo did a really good job of making the flashbacks matter. I dont typically read YA fantasy, I stick more to Adult. But I loved Six of Crows.

    Interesting point I didn’t realise it but yes I was ageing the characters up. That being said it is perhaps a privileged position to think that young adults wouldn’t be that hardened? Think kids in developing countries being recruited as children, all sorts of heavy burdens. I know my dad had major trauma and basically fended for himself from age 6. Also it’s a fantasy world, that’s the point, it’s not 21st century suburban living, personally that’s what I like about YA, the total escapism it provides, 17year olds living entirely different realities to mine when I was young.

    I read this first, loved it, and went back to read the Grisha trilogy hoping to get more information. I was completely disappointed. I learned next to nothing that I wanted to learn about, the politics and the Ravkan civil war which were barely touched on, and instead was force fed an unlikable love story between childhood best friends that reinforces the age old adage that a girl can get the boy if she contorts herself into s man’s idea of what she should be. Can’t be too special, can’t be too smart, can’t have interests or hopes or desires that don’t revolve around him being the center of her world. 🤬

    I read both Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom like two months ago. I enjoyed them for the most part, but didn't love them like I wanted to. The characters being so young bothered me more than it should have, especially Kaz. I really felt he should have been at least mid-twenties to early thirties. But it was definitely the characters that kept me interested as the plot didn't keep me invested all the time. Also, I did enjoy Leigh Bardugo's writing style, and I definitely want to read more of her books.
    I haven't read the original Grisha triolgy, and while I got that there was a few things I didn't get (mostly in the second book with the characters from Ravka), I wasn't lost or anything. I just shrugged and went with it. I'm planning on reading the original trilogy soon so I can move on to King of Scars.

    I disagree about reading the Grisha books first. Mostly bc i dislike them a lot and DF the series after the first book. But I´ve read SoC first (and liked it), otherwise i would have never picked it up after reading the grisha series. In my opinion the Magic system is not that complex, or the use so important that it is necessary to have an "explanation" at the start. I admit that i disliked the charaters from the grisha books, mostly bc it was written in a sense of "oh look here is xy, the blabla" and while reading it I was like "okay? should i care about them? why should i care?".

While her character work and relationship dynamics are excellent, LB makes a lot of 'errors' or plot choices that make it hard to take the story seriously. LB has a fair grasp of the basics of physics and reality but frequently forgets some glaringly obvious things. From the Grisha trilogy, for instance, she had people miles below ground and miles above it and never noted or considered the effects of air pressure. If you go from living in a deep cave to living high on a mountain top in a matter of a week, you will need medical attention or you will be needing an oxygen mask. She has characters go into freezing water and then get out and walk across the ice... But one of the most annoying things is the amount of things that a character can actually get done in such a short period of time. I adore the character of Inej but she accomplishes her tasks that involve spying and information gathering way too quickly, not to mention traversing a city by its rooftops is nowhere near as fast or simple as she makes it seem. I give a lot of leeway for drama and such but time and again when characters are basically slowing time down to get all the things they do accomplished in the stated time, it knocks me out of my immersion.

    Finally, I find the level of technology shifting very jarring. The Ice Court is a totally ridiculous place. It is obviously made by Fabricators and it is so old that it shouldn't be possible. During the time when this place was supposedly built, Druskella were new and Grisha were being hunted constantly by everyone else and mistrusted. They lived in scattered hidden groups and they weren't that powerful. They had no great organizations at all and the greatest amongst them were mostly in hiding. Read Demon in the Wood, the Darkling prequel. How did a nation of Witch hating zealots manage to find fabricators with that much power who were also educated and had the knowledge of higher math and engineering, to be able to build such a complex edifice? How does jerda have so much Grisha Steel? In our world, steel eventually came out of steel mills, but you can't make Grisha steel that way. LB makes this same kind of error all over the place in her world. Just because XYZ 'exists' in the world, doesn't mean it makes sense for everyone to have access to it. There are no steam engines or combustion engines mentioned or depicted in general use and electricity is right out. Yet, we get an automobile e.g. a horseless carriage... a freaking TANK that could only have been made by Grisha. Even so, what was propelling it? It is this kind of thing that nags at me, no matter how good the character stuff is.
