    The Palette comes out, its held in with magnetic tape ! I took mine out and use it at home. Its lovely to mix on with small brushes .

    Nice review! I'm confused by the palette itself being that I normally use ceramic to mix on, not hold my paint. I don't understand why schmincke would include ceramic that doesn't have a little bit more space for mixing.

      Mh, good point. And the pans are not even secured in the insert, so I don't know. The white paint is kind of useless, so maybe they could've worked the space differently and offer a bit more ceramic flat space for mixing... Now I really wonder how a metal tin could incorporate ceramic for its mixing spaces...

    I have this set. I didn't like the porcelain plate inside and using a pokey tool (something with a very pointed end) I was able to lift it out. It stays in place with three magnets attached to the bottom of the plate, so it does not hurt the tin to take it out. I love the colors in this set, except the white.
    I replaced the white with yellow ochre and may green for sap green.

    Great video and congrats on the 1k+ 💜💜💜
    At that price range, it should be taboo to place a white in the palette. Btw, I love seeing your mixing charts :D

      Thank you! :D
      LOL, I agree with that! It's always the least expensive pigment, too. Feels cheap from companies to fill the last spot with white, when it could've been a much more exciting color...

    Great video Eve! 😆 Definitely an interesting palette. I would think you could add tube paints to the 6 small wells. I have a small ceramic palette (12 wells) that I have my original packs of Daniel Smith in (the 2 -6packs 5ml tubes). Granted, I don't take this palette traveling, so I don't know if there would be an issue. Pretty colors. 😃

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 років тому +2

      Thanks Val! :D
      I don't think this palette is the best for traveling, it's heavy and I'd be worried about dropping it and breaking the porcelain insert (and the mixing flap is sort of useless unless you can set this palette on a flat surface). I might just put tube paints in the tray then, if I ever go through the pans XD

  • @UTleochi
    @UTleochi 7 років тому +2

    The porcelain palette has magnets on the bottom, so it doesn't fall out of the tin. But it can be prized out. I see the set as a sample collection for their new paints. I put them in a separate tin with other pans and am using the palette as a nice mixing palette. The white was a bummer, though, unless one likes to paint opaque mixes with pastelly tones.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 років тому

      Oh! Wow, thank you for the infos! I was wondering how the porcelain was moving around so much but not falling down when I turn the whole thing over, now I know! (I was also very hesitant to be rough with it, I'd hate myself if I broke it).
      I think I'll just remove the white from the set and use it on toned paper. Like I said, I think it can be useful for grayscale studies (but then again that might not interest everyone).

    That was a lovely review! I find your videos to be relaxing and enjoyable to watch. I really like how you do the mixing charts. I don't know how to do this yet, so I need to learn :) Thank you for comparing this set with the other one. I can see how the colours in the other set might be more versatile, but I LOVE the colours in this one. So pretty!

      I didn't know you were also interested in watercolors! That's so neat! (Feel free to ask if you have any question!)
      The tray from this set hangs really low, but then again the set is quite heavy (around 350 grams) so it's clearly not the most convenient to carry. It's a formidable mini studio palette though.

      I think it's a floral set, yes! It's not marketed or sold as such, but when I was looking at my color chart I really couldn't see any other rhyme to this set of colors. It's my first porcelain palette (of sort) and now I can see why they are so loved :)

      The porcelain looks classy, but is it really that much on an improvement over the metal tray in terms of efficiency? Hard to say.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 років тому

      That's what I think too, but there's also no room left in the set to carry tubes... so I'm not sure. And it's kind of a heavy set for travel, so yeah maybe it's just meant to have some extra paints in those compartments. It's a versatile space, for sure.

  • @CyaneInkArt
    @CyaneInkArt 7 років тому +4

    This was really useful info for me. I was going to buy this set to travel set, but it seems too heavy and colour selection is bit odd. I really like mixing on porcelain palette, but in this set it has quite little mixing space on porcelain. But this would still be nice :D Can't decide... Also, I think this is same tin than Schmincke 9 full pans set.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 років тому +3

      It's not the best for travel. I weighed the set, it weighs 355 grams. The historical palette (the 12 full pans) weighs 300 grams. A standard 12 half-pans tin with paints in it weighs about 165 grams. So yeah, it's kind of heavy for traveling around.
      Oh! I had never seen that 9 full pans set before!! Do you know if the tray is removable? :D

    • @CyaneInkArt
      @CyaneInkArt 7 років тому +2

      I think I look for standard 12 half-pans set :D 355 grams is really heavy to hold, I like to hold my palette on my left hand when painting outside. I have seen that 9 full pans set online (old amazon listing), but I have no idea is the tray removable. I think it's quite old set, haven't seen it never be in stock.

    • @UTleochi

      That set was a special edition, and yes, the insert is removable, as is the porcelain palette. You won't normally find the set, unless you're lucky (maybe on e-bay). I believe it wasn't even a Horadam, but an Akademie set.

  • @paulage1art

    Another great review! I just love Schmincke paints and for the life of me can't figure out why they would use the porcelain portion of the palette to hold half pans! The benefit of porcelain is the delightful way the paints mix on the surface and the ease of cleaning. Why they choose to cover it up with half pans is such a waste of space and weight for a travel palette. Someone needs to invent a variety of sizes porcelain inserts for travel palettes. I wonder if a thin layer of porcelain could be bonded to a metal lid and fold out panels that stay horizontal when opened. Why haven't watercolor manufacturers done this decades ago? Any Indigogo people with the drive and funds to create one? I would surely invest! Thanks!
    Paula in Florida

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 років тому +2

      Thank you!
      And you're absolutely right about the porcelain insert. I'd think a thin layer of porcelain would break too easily for a travel palette... but maybe some sort of easy-to-replace porcelain-with-magnets inserts would be great. Something that you can buy a new one for cheap when the first one breaks.... It would add a lot of weight though, so IDK. (I'd still love it though!!)

    Great review!
    One could easily throw away the greens, other than the perylene green. Perylene green is excellent for the really dark shsdes of vegetation. I would keep it. Sometimes ultramarine does the trick, but not always. The white is a real set off in such an expensive set, especially with all the new pigments that are out. To me it signals "keep batch costs down to save money". Artist quality sets should never include a white. White is an accessory. So does have a use, but I think it is very limited in sketching. I would replace it with an earth colour, like burnt sienna.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 років тому +2

      Thank you! :)
      I could never throw away Schmincke paints, GASP ;) Kidding aside, I know what you mean. I was a bit puzzled by this color selection but then I realized that it's probably really well suited to botanicals. I still would've done without the white and the neutral in favor of other new colors, but heh.

    • @trondbirkeland8094
      @trondbirkeland8094 7 років тому +1

      Had a similar thought regarding a travel set by Sennelier. It had far too many reds for me to make intelligent use of. Could have botanicals in mind.
      By the way, as the white is a quite opaque (and not the dreaded zinc white) I suppose one could paint in a way more like John Singer Sargent with white opaque strokes added when the other paint is bone dry. It's not a very common technique, though... ..I think...

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 років тому

      A lot of Sennelier's products are intended for botanicals because these paints glaze very well... There's even a special set by Billy Showell, a botanical painter :)

  • @KarijnsWatercolors

    Thanks for this review! :D
    I agree that the ceramic insert that doesn't come out makes no sense, also I believe in bigger mixing areas, so instead of six small wells I'd have put two larger wells, but I guess I can see the potential to use them maybe to add some other colors to the palette.
    From the mixes it almost looks like this palette is made for 'unicorn' drawings, a lot of possible red/purple/blue mixes, very bright but very unnatural. The previous palette is definitely more versatile, both colour-wise and in it's structure.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 років тому

      I completely agree with you (though maybe more flowers and plants than unicorns XD ). It's a lot less obvious what this color range is the best for so I think it could've benefitted from slightly more targeted marketing..? Anyway.
      I was thinking, but what if I want to wash the ceramic..? I'd have to use a rag and water but IDK, some things are much easier to wash just by putting them under running water. I would've also prefered two larger wells than 6 small ones, but it's still good. It's a lovely palette still and this is my first porcelain palette and the feeling of mixing paint on it is very enjoyable XD

  • @KateTheSleepyTeacher
    @KateTheSleepyTeacher 7 років тому

    Love your reviews, Eve :). Im not sure why Schmincke is leaving the edges unrolled.... I've heard they are very sharp. Even still, I want this so bad, but I hardly have time to paint, so it doesn't make sense for me. They sure do look lovely.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 років тому +1

      Thanks Kate! :)
      I don't understand either. For something that is meant to be handled, leaving the edges unrolled is a sure recipe for disaster at some point. They are a kind of dull-sharp, if that makes sense. Like genuinely sharp stuff (like knives or razors), I've cut myself on them without noticing because of how smooth they are. These tins though, they feel rough. I touch the unfinished edges and they feel like a hazard, like them saying "you know you're going to cut yourself at some point and it's gonna be VERY unpleasant".

    • @EveBolt

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 років тому

      In what way? It's a half-chart, like when one makes a standard mixing chart it is generally square and has 2 times the color mixes. I start from that but I don't do 2 swatches for each mix, just one... Does that help? :)

    Interesting... but I don't get the Idea of the Ceramic insert - A ceramic mixing area yes but the wells no. I suppose you could use the extra wells to add tube colour or drop the pans all together and just fill it with tube colour - Is that their idea? It does not seem practical to use them for mixing in, they are so small and hard to clean out unless you have tiny fingers - my monsters wouldn't stand a chance. Seems a bit odd to make a small portable size palette and weigh it down like a brick by filling it with porcelain? Looks great though!

    • @EveBolt

      Sadly, the sterling silver one is truly out of my budget XD (Or "was", it doesn't look like it's still available on Jackson's website). I wish I could've seen it in person though, I'm kinda curious about how silver might change the feel of it all. And I bet the patina would be gorgeous (though, I can't even imagine bringing it along and maybe losing it somewhere.... brrr).
      The porcelain insert is truly neat. I guess if I ever was to go through the pans, I could put my favorite paints right in the palette, to capitalize on the fact that ceramic is awesome as a palette.

    • @marissaswinghammer3149

      I think it was something like 800GBP! If I had that kind of cash marked for a palette it would be one of those sweet brass numbers. I have the regular version of that palette with a metal insert. I got it with their student grade paint on sale and gave the paint to my kids. It holds 21 half pans and has a large mixing area which is nice for a relatively small palette.

    I just love the schmincke burnt sienna sepia olive green and pinks. Their purple is fun for botanicals but on it's own it's strooong,rofl, I was doing my Iris and was like, what the héll :P I had that with the white nights purple as well. Very pretty but takes some getting used to,haha. I thought you were taking it easy on the to buy list *grinnnnnn I think, but that's just me, you're better of buying lose pans than a complete set and buy an empty whatever brand tin. But because I live in the eu the schmincke pans sell rather affordable for around 3 euro's. Making it no sence to buy a set where price is higher when you see individual pan price. That I think is a con to schmincke's sets, but very much fun when you want to make your own personal sets

      Where I live, I can't find Schmincke locally at all. Jackson's is really the only way I can get those paints at a good price. What I really don't get though, is the price of empty Schmincke metal tins. It's baffling XD
