That womans are Just op dude, im stating learning abaut HEMA by my self watching Stances, movés. And NOW watching it i feel like a noob xD ha ha i hope get a decente lvl i ha bue some good swords for practice, also got some Wood, practice whit my GF that she like it too. Well but is Hard whit out a máster watching videos following fior book xD, thanks for reading this bullshit coment, i only hope to be that good. PD also i wanted to participe on battle of nations. Hello from argentina
It depends on the scoring system, is judged only the hit, not all the dinamic, in kendo the refrees are the only who ghive or not points, what fighters (or "seconds") have to say are irrelevant, that's because the scoring system are much more complex so just feeling of hit or not are not enough Over that are a demonstration of good spirit, instead of the poor show we see in olympic fencing
They mostly have lighter words. Even that they are weaker than man i think that really fast movement and accurate movement comes from that. maaaaybe. Random shittalker signs out. ^^
Phylotoffer maybe slightly lighter, but still within what you'd see historically. Weight isn't really a huge constraint for a longsword since you have so much leverage. It would be a bigger issue for broadsword or especially rapier, where weight can really start to cause issues due to being one handed. A lot of tournaments don't even segregate men and women. The women are at a bit of a disadvantage, due to being weaker, but strength rarely is the most important factor in a swordfight, so some women often get fairly far.
Yeah, I was particularily impressed at that perfect duck-and-counter to the leg at 7:07. Lightning fucking reflexes, or maybe he just read the move well.
Congrats on making finals in longsword and getting the bronze in broadsword to Erik. How many judges do they have to spot hits? Most of the time Skal's slow-mo replay is required for me to see what the hit was. So a big hand to them for doing their job.
Usually at least two. There are 3 judges plus a director watching, and they're all highly skilled fighters, which makes it a lot easier for them to see what's going on.
Don't forget that the judges are actually there, witnessing the fluid motion of real life. They aren't restrained by UA-cam's 30/60 fps and camera angle, which does make a little bit of a difference.
I believe they are only good sports because there are no real stakes on the line, had this been for millions of dollars they'd probably take whatever points they could get
The women are not only ferocious, but very honourable and have great sportsmanship As well! They’re also very supportive of each other, till the instant that one of them said ‘nice’ to the other Much respect for wahmen
Is it me or women's exchanges were more spectacular (compared to previous videos)? I've no idea if it was better from the technique standpoint, but it looked awesome.
The women's gold match was, to be honest, my favourite one out of the entire tournament when I was there. Lianna and Jane absolutely killed it, and the energy was amazing.
Unfortunately the scoring is too subjective to make it as an Olympic sport (for now). Strict, objective scoring (likely electronic) would be required... gather top practitioners around the world with fame, money, and their country's pride on the line and I doubt you'd see such honorable actions.
We have only to look at modern Olympic fencing to see how the sport would invariably turn out if it were added to the olympics unfortunately. With such high stakes on the line, no one would ever call out hits against themselves, or their own bad hits, in the name of honor when a lot of money, and as Shiroto said, their nations pride is on the line. No matter how you look at it, the sport would just devolve into current olympic fencing, and then what would the purpose be of it even being in the olympics? its technically already there
Im not saying its not highly accurate, im saying HEMA would just devolve into exactly what modern olympic fencing is if it were added to the olympics. And then you'd just have two of the exact same sport.
I tried sabre for the first time this week which is technically very similar to what they were doing with the broadswords. Its no joke, my arm felt like it was falling off within two minutes. Incredible display of strength and skill all over these videos, thanks Skall!
A very good video, its surprising how fast an attack can be to get past a defenders guard. Well done to all participants and especially the team for setting it all up.
Lee Smith - i think such name in itself gives +10 to melee fighting. Not to mention his amazing speed, which can be underestimated cause of his ,,fluffier" posture
Now at 4:21 does that REALLY count as an afterblow? It just seemed to happen too long after the initial hit to count as such. I've always thought of an afterblow as needing to have already started before the first hit landed.
There was a stab to the face mask just before that, and he had already decided to go for the swing when the halt was called. In the middle of the moment it can be hard to check those shots like that.
I know Erik (for certain) and Julian (I think so, my memory is terrible) have been in other videos on Skall's channel, but I can't recall if anyone else has off the top of my head.
Legend 171 There's no way to know for certain how often they were actually used, but you can find many techniques involving grappling, throws, or even grabbing the enemy's weapon in a lot of HEMA manuals. I don't know that they would punch or kick that often if they had their weapon, but there are definitely opportunities where using your body and not your sword is a valid move.
Djentleman thanks because i thought that a person with a lot of physical strength and in armor could use this to their advantage espically when facing an armored opponent
If I had to guess, in the middle of a large battle, you'd be fighting for your life so hard you'd use whatever you can to not die. Seems to be reasonable.
Rivers256 i agree, they would have done whatever kept them alive at the time, if a punch or anything for that matter would work at any time im sure they would have done it. kill or be killed, who cares how in something like that
Why do I feel like the ref was tryna diss Lee Smith...everyone fought well that day, but Lee’s precision was phenomenal...he had to say “ to everyone’s surprise” and he just handed him the medal instead of draping on him like the rest. Homie was hatin bad
Man this really makes me want to try it out! Everyone seems so nice, and it looks crazy fun. I feel like I'd be terrible at it, though. Looks like footwork is HUGE, and I've been doing combat sports on and off and competitively since I was 15. Never crossing my feet, lateral footwork, and even where I keep my head relative to my feet is cool for hand to hand, but I have a feeling it means I get my ass whooped and continuously make stupid errors in this.
I just love the sounds of the swords connecting in midair.
The clashing of blades! Love it!
it is such a sharp sound that pleases my ear holes...
It does sound rather nice lol
I definitely agree. Now imagine the sound of two pommels colliding in midair!
The Earth would implode
Such good sports, constantly calling hits on themselves and voiding their own hits!
imagine if 2 million dollars is on the line. trust me, the honor would be but a whisper of the past.
That womans are Just op dude, im stating learning abaut HEMA by my self watching Stances, movés. Hello from argentina
makes me think it would be better to judge a video tape after the match, it's really hard to see live.
Yep that's why I dislike Mainstream sports, most of the time it's more about winning than anything else.
It depends on the scoring system, is judged only the hit, not all the dinamic, in kendo the refrees are the only who ghive or not points, what fighters (or "seconds") have to say are irrelevant, that's because the scoring system are much more complex so just feeling of hit or not are not enough
Over that are a demonstration of good spirit, instead of the poor show we see in olympic fencing
Where are the bagpipes?
Skallagrim got annoyed by them and did a driveby pommel throwing from the back of his destrier.
Fat Tiger lmao
More like glad there are no bagpipes.
Ending them rightly
Where they belong
The women of HEMA are quite ferocious aren't they, great video.
They mostly have lighter words. Even that they are weaker than man i think that really fast movement and accurate movement comes from that. maaaaybe. Random shittalker signs out. ^^
Are you British? Genuine question
Phylotoffer maybe slightly lighter, but still within what you'd see historically. Weight isn't really a huge constraint for a longsword since you have so much leverage. It would be a bigger issue for broadsword or especially rapier, where weight can really start to cause issues due to being one handed.

Same swords as everyone else uses.
"They mostly have lighter words." Nope, male and female fighters use the same kind of swords.
Damn the way they change stances and adjust to the opponent's movement is incredible. I probably missed 90% of those strikes without the slowmo.
The Amount of speed Lee moves at is incredible. During the broadsword segment I was blown away with his agility. Bravo!
Yeah, I was particularily impressed at that perfect duck-and-counter to the leg at 7:07. Lightning fucking reflexes, or maybe he just read the move well.
Lee is an absolute UNIT. Gratz.
in awe at the size of this lad
Lee Smith OP plz nerf
😂 Seriously though
That is essentially what I took away from this video, hah. The women were very skilled and aggressive though, I liked that. All around good fights.
It's interesting how distinctive Shawn's longsword style was compared to what I've seen from the other fighters in the tournament
Never in my life I've seen such disrespect to women,
they're fighting in final, showing good sportsmanship...
AND NO BAGPIPES FOR THEM!!!!!!!
the bagpipe players are annihilated by Skall's pommel throw
I am ever grateful they are gone, to be honest. They only belong in Scotland. Please keep them there, scotts! They're okay in moderation, though...
If anything, that's respectful >_>
if i were there i would have done something about it.
Personally it helps me focus one what's actually happening a lot more. I prefer it without the bagpipes lol
You edit all these scenes together minus the strikes that counted points, and you get a pretty good movie fight action scene: 1:02, 1:09, 1:30, 1:50, 2:25, 4:18, 4:37, 5:09, 5:56, 10:36, 11:02, 11:16, 11:30, 11:45, 12:12, 13:29.
I'm about to try this
Dwarves going for the legs. Nothing new haha
Cadeyrn Dragheim MY KNEE!
That was a great match, and a little more aggressive than the long sword sparring videos that's for sure!
Congrats on making finals in longsword and getting the bronze in broadsword to Erik.
How many judges do they have to spot hits? Most of the time Skal's slow-mo replay is required for me to see what the hit was. So a big hand to them for doing their job.

I like Lee Smith technique duck and cover :D The leg hit after duck deflect at 7:09 was awesome. He's like Gimli with a grace of Aragorn.
The level of sportsmanship in this gives me the warm fuzzies.
I believe they are only good sports because there are no real stakes on the line, had this been for millions of dollars they'd probably take whatever points they could get
The women are not only ferocious, but very honourable and have great sportsmanship As well! They’re also very supportive of each other, till the instant that one of them said ‘nice’ to the other
Much respect for wahmen
Why do I keep seeing people spelling women as "wahman"? I don't get the joke and whatever it is, I don't find it funny.
Damn those exchanges are so fast
The two women's longsword finalists are insanely good. Wow.
Thanks guys! It was a fun match. :)
More defensive fighting styles which leads to a longer exchange.
They're fast as hell and the technique felt very refined yes
I know I'm late to the party, but how can hollywood not see the visual appeal of actual historical swordsmanship. This is magnificent.
Very honorable contenders, worth applauding
well said, great sportsmanship
I've never seen this level of sportsmanship it's pretty amazing
I'm late but seeing his joy when the results were announced made me want to try this even more.
With that level of rules and organisation it should be at the olympics.
Unfortunately the scoring is too subjective to make it as an Olympic sport (for now). Strict, objective scoring (likely electronic) would be required... gather top practitioners around the world with fame, money, and their country's pride on the line and I doubt you'd see such honorable actions.
Artistic skating ? Think that's way more subjective, yet it is still in olympics.
No matter how you look at it, the sport would just devolve into current olympic fencing, and then what would the purpose be of it even being in the olympics? its technically already there
Darkrender Actually thanks to electronic scoring, Olympic fencing is a highly accurate game of tag, down to the millisecond ;-)
Im not saying its not highly accurate, im saying HEMA would just devolve into exactly what modern olympic fencing is if it were added to the olympics. And then you'd just have two of the exact same sport.
Well done Erik.
Thanks!
Wow what amazing fairplay! I congratulate all of them for that. This very much strengthened my decision to get into HEMA as soon as possible.
I tried sabre for the first time this week which is technically very similar to what they were doing with the broadswords. Its no joke, my arm felt like it was falling off within two minutes.
Incredible display of strength and skill all over these videos, thanks Skall!
Gotta love the honor of all participants! I wish other tournaments would adept that...
Never thought I'd be the one for what I think is fencing of some sort, but this was really fun and entertaining to watch.
Man longsword fencing is so fucking satisfying to watch
Lee really loves those leg snipes
Yes he does!
It's a joy to see him land them over and over throughout the years of videos!
Amazing skill shown by everyone! One of the most exciting videos I've watched in a long time!
I think it's so bizarre and amazing how I can recognize so many people in an event I've never heard of. I love the tight nit HEMA community.
Much more entertaining than the game of electronic tag that Olympic fencing is.
The first match was so awesome! I'd love to see a rapier match between them!
No bagpipes for the finals? Someone messed up the scheduling.
A very good video, its surprising how fast an attack can be to get past a defenders guard. Well done to all participants and especially the team for setting it all up.
That hug at the start XD
Adorable.
Thx for no bagpipes man missed your commentary on it like hearing your thoughts ect on it
Skalligrim! You were in a deus vult meme!
Gabriel Carl link?
Lee Smith - i think such name in itself gives +10 to melee fighting.
Not to mention his amazing speed, which can be underestimated cause of his ,,fluffier" posture
As a blacksmith who dabbles in bladesmithing. That dagger was gorgeous.
Looks like a lot of fun. I want to try this now
Dang--those exchanges were FAST!
Awesome athletes
broadsword exchanges just like sabers always look so charming even when they are bad.
Excellent form.
5:05 That was my favourite exchange, just so clean and pleasing to watch
Wow this looked beautyful
Lee and his tradmark leg shots. The bane of tall fighters everywhere!
You rock Skall literally what I asked for yesterday! 😃
I know I keep saying this....but I love these videos.
KCD tournaments flashbacks rushing in my head
I love theese videos with a fiery passion
Honesty is allways great, the Judge can't allways see everything... even with two extras helping.
That first match was super dopee
Lee is an amazing swordsman. I wish I lived in Canada so I could train under him.
God damn that first fight was tense!
Those are great matches and pretty good sportmanship too
These ladies are badass ass good sportsmanship and awesome technique
Are we not going to talk about the awesome codpieces?
I LOVE the sportsmanship!
Congratulations to everyone!
Girls had the most skill. Beautiful to watch.
That's how it goes down on the street yo.....500 years ago yo
This is awesome. Wish I could like more than once
that duck and cut is so good at 7:06
I love watching these
I really love these videos. More!
OMG.... this is awesome
I love this stuff
12:56, by far, my favorite exchange
Impressive, as always
Now at 4:21 does that REALLY count as an afterblow? It just seemed to happen too long after the initial hit to count as such. I've always thought of an afterblow as needing to have already started before the first hit landed.
There was a stab to the face mask just before that, and he had already decided to go for the swing when the halt was called. In the middle of the moment it can be hard to check those shots like that.
They all just look like they’re having so much fun, I wish I was there haha
These Ladies know how to make the Swords sing.
Great stuff as always Skall!
Hey Skall!
I assume most of the people there know your channel and I was just wondering if that's true.
Great video btw :)
I know Erik (for certain) and Julian (I think so, my memory is terrible) have been in other videos on Skall's channel, but I can't recall if anyone else has off the top of my head.
I believe it was Julian who kept breaking Skall's weapons (Unless I'm totally wrong), but I know for certain he's been in other videos.
Erik is the one that breaks Skall's weapons. And yeah, Julian, Erik, and Lee have all been in his videos.
Since Julian commented on the scoring and his performance for the cutting competition, that confirms him as a viewer.
How often were melee attacks such as kicks, punches, and headbutts used in warfare along with dueling.
Legend 171
There's no way to know for certain how often they were actually used, but you can find many techniques involving grappling, throws, or even grabbing the enemy's weapon in a lot of HEMA manuals. Legend 171 I'd imagine if you had to, maybe a kick or to trip your opponent, otherwise I'd prefer to use a weapon over my fists lol
Rivers256 i agree, they would have done whatever kept them alive at the time, if a punch or anything for that matter would work at any time im sure they would have done it. kill or be killed, who cares how in something like that
Women's finals were so damn good. I'd love to see a match between Lianna and Lee.
More broadsword!! So entertaining
Looks like good fun wish I could join in.
I absolutely love those codpieces.
These are so much fun to watch! :D
Got to admire the fella with the golden codpiece at 6.16
Nice vid skall.
This stuff is really cool.
Great matches!
Love these.
These videos make me wish I had the time and money to put into HEMA
This was great, and no bagpipes!
Why do I feel like the ref was tryna diss Lee Smith...everyone fought well that day, but Lee’s precision was phenomenal...he had to say “ to everyone’s surprise” and he just handed him the medal instead of draping on him like the rest.
Homie was hatin bad
The women moves are beautiful :3 their precision, smotheenes of their steps
could you maybe offer some commentary on these videos? as an untrained eye, I would like to learn a bit about stances, strategies, styles, etc
I'm really impressed by that Lee Smith. Short, overweight, but fast as hell!
That was fun.
And no bagpipes!
Swords: cling and clang
Me: *satifaction*
Man this really makes me want to try it out! Everyone seems so nice, and it looks crazy fun. I feel like I'd be terrible at it, though. Looks like footwork is HUGE, and I've been doing combat sports on and off and competitively since I was 15. Can't edit on my tablet, but it also looks like the stance is waaay more bladed in this. Can anyone explain to me some good form for footwork?
This is Really Cool!!!!
