- Just a few examples of techniques from the historical manuals that might look pretty fancy in movie or video game fighting.
Also, quirky outtakes with my friend Emily. :)

I liked Emily's technique: Vocal Confusion.
"It's Super Effective!" XD
The giggling over the gauntlets is the best part !
"On the first day of Skallmas.." :) She's a hoot.
They look like crab hands
@@Timbo5000 aww was about to say that lol
I just thought it was adorable.
Yeah, it came so out of nowhere, i automaticly joined in giggling. lol.
This is exactly what movies need. Less "this guy is a great swordfighter because he hits super hard and does less stupid shit". More "this guy is a great swordfighter because he has complete control over his weapon and knows the fastest/most efficient way to kill you (which just so happens to look cool)"
Skal looking like an urban fantasy monster hunter
Awh man, Emily seems like a super fun person to hang out with.
On the first day of Skallmas my instructor gave to me:
A longsword in a backscabbard.
You mean shabbard?
@@equilibrium138 you bear me to it xD
@@shalkonon013 "Skallmas"! You're geniouse!
On the third day of Skallmass
my instructor gave to me,
Three wallhangers
Two murder-strokes
And a dane axe in a pear tree
5:42 nyamuttaba... I mean, words
What was that? did she actually try to say something?
@@manueltoloza6007 maybe? I think so because she said "I mean, words". Although people do make sounds to communicate sometimes. Still, was funny xD
Sounded like "haha, not too bad-" ...maybe?
Ancient Language
Nya is something anime catgirls attach to all sorts of words (it translates to meow)
It would be fun if a movie would have some pepole doing the normal spinning, Jumping and sword acrobatic. then they get totaly cut down by one or two who use real things from historical manuals.
Kinda like the Indiana Jones scene where dude starts swing his scimitar around and Jones just pulls out a gun and fucks him up. But this time he pulls a sword and then still fucks him up.
And here i thought that everyday you had to square off with a number of ninjas trying to assasinate you on the grounds of disrespecting glorious nippon steel :)
Skall looks like a witcher in this i think
Joey Harvey I thought he kinda resembled Duncan McCleod from Highlander.
definitely got some sort of wandering lone warrior look at least
Definitely looks more like Geralt than the 'bad-cosplay Legolas' Henry Cavil appears to be.
He needs a haircut badly
he looks like he has a medieval mullet
Love this video, Skal! Wish you would be the choreographer for movies and video games!
I just wish the movie choreographers would contact him every once in a while to ask for advice. Also Lindybeige, Scholagladiatoria, Metatron, SnapJelly, or Shadiversity.
@@ninjahombrepalito1721 At least they need to give the hero a shabbard for the back sword :D
It depends on the weapons in play in said fight scene. Snap jelly is an actual fight choreographer. Lindybeige would just talk about how spears are superior to swords. Matt would do a pretty good fight scene.
Shad would.... I don’t even know but it wouldn’t be great.
@@levifontaine8186 The sad thing is that the films usually have historians and most of them are probably even more knowledgeable than Skall Shad Metatron Lindy etc. BUT they just don't listen to them because they want to make it "Interesting"
AMEN! @@ninjahombrepalito1721
About duplieren - you want to lock your opponent's sword with a crossguard, so you strike him with one edge and push his sword away with the other. You made them unbind completly, so she could just cut you on a double. Other than that it was fine clip :) .
Duplieren is descibed in many different ways over the centuries. Lichtenauer, Ringeck, Meyer all describe it differently. In addition you find techniques that are duplieren in other manuals as well, but not under that name. To lock your opponents sword with your guard may be good in a slower fight, but when going faster it might take momentum away from your strike and you make it easier for your opponent to feel. Working in the bind might not be in your best interest against someone who knows how the Krieg works. There is always more than one approach, and something that fits one situation very well, might be deadly in the next. I would encourage you to use both kinds of duplieren in your fencing school, and watch how the opponent reacts when he doesn't know what comes.
I perform my duplerien type attack with similar handwork, but a strong step to my left instead of right following the wind.
This leaves my weapon strongly bound to my opponent's sword pressing back towards their right shoulder... and my short edge on the right side of their head. Any pressure either of us has in the bind sends the weak firmly into the opponents head, and the natural tendency to drive it away only forces it in harder, as does 'walking through' once the bind is set.
OMG - "Can we do it again without squeaking"? "NO!" I love it. :D And then straight into the giggles over gauntlets, my life is complete now. Thank you Emily and Skallagrim.
no idea how this didn't come up already, but emily is adorable X3
with all due respect sir, i'd make the lady head of the channel, mainly for the squirrel noises
SQUIRREL!!
"*insert giberish* I mean words" discribes my life perfectly
The gautlets part was funny. The whole end of the video is.
Ikr? Lol
*random squeaking and giggles* Emily is sooo precious in this video !! Love it!
You almost look like a Jedi master in the thumbnail with what you're wearing and your long hair xD
.
Btw, I liked the whooshing sounds.
Ninja Hombrepalito Quai Gon Skall
Looks like?!? Skal strikes and moves like a Jedi
@@dreammfyre Anakin proceedes with fancy choreographed moves and skall slices him up with one strike
30 days of SKALLMAS!!! i need this!
Amazing Videos Skall, keep up with the amazing content.
Greetings from Brazil
From Brazil too, and i realy love skall's content.
Então falem português caraleo
She squeaks like a pokemon.
Thank's for reminding us about this video. Emily was such a breath of fresh air. Such a happy woman. And the longsword moves are interesting. But they do seem pretty high risk. I wonder how hard or easy they are to counter.
Anyway, thanks Skall.
I honestly wish that Star Wars fights would look more like this.
Thats what I live about Episode 1. Ray Park was a real martial artist and was great at staff fighting which made the fight look amazingly natural!
The bloopers at the end were the most wholesome and loving things I've seen from your videos. I hope I can find someone like that someday.
I saw that little grab the guard and dip thing before and I often wondered...would that really work? Not sure we will ever really find out.
Haha, Emily is hilariously cute. Squeak! Then laughing at her gauntlet hands, haha.
I won’t lie, I’ve tried putting some of the actual longsword techniques in fight scenes I’ve wrote, they’re so much fun.
I did see this three years ago but I am glad to be reminded of the Emily out takes.
Please do more of these. I write fantasy books and your sparing videos, and this especially, is soo helpful when designing fights.
Great demonstration of the techniques! Also, Emily seems like a cool person.
In that light or lack thereof , the practice swords look a lot like light sabers. Please do consider more of this in the future. (Makes light Saber noises).
Ikr!?!?!?!
Wasnt expecting such a heartwarming ending lol
6:03 there’s a cutscene in Kingdom Come Deliverance in which the main character does, if not the same move, one REALLY similar to that.
For those of you wondering is when Henry (the main character) kills Runt
I now want an Emily doll that when you pull the string it squeaks and giggles!!! ;)
Man, it's really refreshing to see historicaly acurate moves that are epic but also, make sense....you guys should definitely get in the film fight coreography thing...it just looks more organic..
Now I want to get a pair of gauntlets so I can confuse my enemies with my aggressive giggling.
Dønt wørry abøut quality, because the dark time makes atmosphere amazing:3 enjoy u even more like this
This makes me want to see a Skallagrim Isekai series
I honestly want to see that.
Now we shall all join together to celebrate Skallman. The tree topper is a giant pommel.
Skallgrim joined the witchers
Hilarious Steel Mittens!
Seen this in community post, and decided to watch it again!
"I will murder stroke you..."
- Skallagrim, 2018
The lesser known battle form, the giggling gauntlet. Only the Masters were able to unlock it's deathly potential.
Doubling looks like something that would kill you if they endure the pain. Armor would save your life though
Ok, this was a great video. Ty
i dunno if ive caught one of your vids so early. love your content. not a collector or hema participant, but i find it very interesting. and maybe in the future ide look into participating
The technique with the grip switch I doubt I'd ever try. Mostly because I'd probably drop my sword. I especially liked the giggling over the gauntlets.
This looks like Jedi lightsaber fighting. Pretty badass.
Was your opponent a chipmunk? Squeak!!!!!
Thanks Skall
Lolol oh man thats her best defense. Her laugh will throw you off xD
you have to stay in the binding when you try to use "Duplieren". If not you will be hit too and if he is pushing with force and you loose the binding you will get hit realy bad.
ua-cam.com/video/mstry2UzGXc/v-deo.html
Here is a quite good Video of it
I love your sparring videos Skall
Well, plate gauntlets do look a bit like crab claws, so they're pretty funny...
Interesting. The way that you do a lot of these techniques, such as the doubling, is very different from the way we do them at Ottawa Historical Fencing Society (Armoured Company of the Sword).
This video is so iconic!
Inspiration and innovation!!!
On the first day of Skallmas, Skallagrim gave to me!!! A bunch of advanced techniques!!!!!
Gauntlets...the OG hand-cymbals!
4:30 Dwarf Skall is back!
skall playing a witcher in the new series would be cool
Man I used to be really good at duplieren. Haven't tried it in a while. Thanks for reminding me skall
Happy 1st day of skallmass everyone
In the first day of Skallmas, Skally gave to me, a fun video, indeed xD
Giggle gauntlets! I have to admit, I got a little giggly when I saw lobster-claw gauntlets, but not that giggly.
Damn, Skall, your hair's gotten long. Love that
'I will murder-stroke you.' :D :D :D I've never heard that said out loud.
I work with a guy who fights in those HEMA tournaments. I always tell him he’s one spell away from LARPING
Hmm, Whenever you embark on a journey where there is a possibility of an awkward silence, bring along a pair of gauntlets to melt away all the ice.. i.e. keep them in your backpack/purse all the time!
On the actual subject, that duplieren sidestep move looks very risky, would you not receive a pretty nasty cut to your face also, if the opponent instinctively followed your movement and just pushed their blade down toward you?
Most of these looked horribly risky and would probably end in double hits for unarmored combatants.
I’m watching this after I got out of school and my ass hurts from sitting on those hard seats.
Why am I talking about this?Because I remembered that people are dying from Brazilian but lift surgery.
I've just noticed that Skall's intro sounds like a mobile game
Very very nice video!!!
Can you do a video with a choreography historically accurate for a film???
Greetings from Spain
Ok.. Note sure how this will be received but f it. I'd love to see more videos like this one for authentic fights, and if you can throw grapples in that would excellent. Love your vids bro, they help way more than you know.
On the first day of Skallmas my true love gave to me
A Kriegsmesser in a fancy scabbard.
good times
Ending rightly > ending the duel non violently
Just started learning HEMA and my school dose the doubling completely differently. We winde over and into a thrust.
I want to see murder strokes more often in TV shows and moives
I think it would be a more interesting video (albeit a longer one and I realise lighting was an issue) if you also covered what the opponent could do to try and counter your moves. Rather than freezing after the initial block and letting you finish them. This also makes sense from a movie choreography perspective, since the objective is usually to make the fights flow nicely. Though I guess you have showing how the hero could easily dispatch the enemy henchmen covered.
If the first day of skalmas is getting murder stroked I'm scared of the rest.
I heard ska not Skall the first time. "30 days off ska huh? Let's do it."
this lighting fucks me up
Skall looking badass like a modern Viking
There can only be 1!
Io Saturnalia! Have a merry solstice!
Stabbing the opponent while you walk straight into his blade. Seems legit.
The sturzhau thrust you perform is pretty much Mutieren.
Dude dont kill the idea of skallmas i need more swords. You guys should develop that song. I can have my wife listen and maybe, just maybe i can get another sword
Alright cmon we need to see some glowsticks taped on and a spar match
You know Skall likes Emily because he ONLY threatened to murder stroke her and not end her rightly.
Nice setting. :-)
I usually practice sturtzhauw from nebenhut, doing a cut immediately up and over the opponent's weapon, usually to misdirect my opponent, seeing as one usually expects a underhauw from nebenhut, but that's just me
also, I love ubergreiffen, but you usually want to put your hand around the blade, not grabbing the lower part of the crossguard, like you showed later in the video
just my 2 cents on the matter
10 days of Skall-mas please
I can't help but notice how open all of these make you.... although if you catch the opponent offguard I suppose it'd work
Moves are super cool, when you said: ,,I can do this easily, even if I am shorter" (loose quotes) you forgot to account for the shorter arm length! (I am nitpicking, I know)
Oh and one more thing, almost no one will incorporate these moves into their movie, no twirling and shit and no tense looking eye to eye moments where fighters push with their swords trying to win the fight by pushing an edge into their opponents edge......... I fucking hate that!
Anyway, continue your great work sir!
Realizing I know very little about this, it feels like your opponent could just follow through in most of these cases for an easy draw, in which you both die.
Some good fucking shenanigans
Shenanigans!!!!
Great statue fighting moves how the sword doesn't move
