I liked that you included “being stingy” as a mistake - I always thought this was the secret to saving up my money but I’ve realized that it’s just not realistic.

Caroline Hannon i think its more of being practical. I feel like if im being stingy it makes me feel like im depriving myself :(

Your advice is spot on! I’m 22 and I think another big thing after college is to not feel like you have to have your dream apartment, car, lifestyle just because you “”can”” now.. but wait until you save enough to get there slowly

    9:26- Acting out of fear
    9:54- Unnecessary monthly subscriptions
10:12- Pursuing higher education without a plan
10:46- Not being transparent about finances with your S/O
    11:22- Avoid pyramid schemes
    11:34- Excessive spending on alcohol
11:57- Avoid lifestyle creep (awesome podcast episode by Natalie Barbu linked on this!)
12:14- Treating your tax return as a shopping spree
12:39- Not having multiple streams of income if you can

You should negotiate with wedding vendors too! Often times you can get them to agree to a discount if you are paying in full rather than a payment plan.

I really appreciate that you talk about specific things ( eg. honey , empower ) when you aren't doing a sponsorship with them. When influencers only mention things when they are paid it makes me feel uneasy about trusting their words, but I love love love how open and authentic you are with the things you use!

    • @michellereedg

"Lifestyle creep" came out of nowhere after I graduated college a couple months ago. I transitioned from a part-time job to a full-time job and I justified all these lifestyle changes since my salary doubled. It kicked me in the butt when I had unexpected situations that I needed to pay for like water damage to my house and a flat tire. I wish I was more aware of this beforehand. I'm working on this now, but thank you for all the other tips Michelle!

One of my biggest money tips comes to eating out. I only eat out if it’s a social thing (and even then I don’t always say yes). I used to just pick food up on my way home but that adds up. Now I only eat out if it’s a way to socialize with friends or something like that :) great way to eat up groceries and save money!

I’d love to see more videos about how you decided where to invest your money! This is something I’m trying to get more into & don’t really know where to start! There aren’t many “college age” youtubers that make videos about investing and I know you’re really into it based on watching other videos!

    • @michellereedg

for sure! quite honestly, I just don't feel super well-equipped to give insight on investing. I linked a podcast episode Natalie Barbu did with her financial advisor, and it was really insightful for beginning investing tips. maybe as I learn more in the future, though!

This was such a good video - so refreshing not to hear the standard "make a budget", like duh! the "Please don't get into Pyramid schemes" made me giggle. Two tips I have as a trainee financial adviser:
    1. A common reason for non-essential spending (maybe on drugstore makeup for example) is that "new stuff buzz". We crave that feeling of something new, that "treat yo' self" feeling. The best way to counteract the problem whilst also treating yourself is to write a list of "wants" under £10/$10, under £30/$30 and big purchases. That way, at least when you do fancy spending money for the "treat yo' self" feeling/new thing buzz, you're putting that money towards something you won't later regret.
    2. Got to buy something with a payment plan? Shop around first. You would not believe how many people buy cars on Hire Purchase or on a payment plan when they could have bought the car outright with a bank loan (which has a far better APR). Always research your options first.

Getting my finances in better order, paying off current credit card and student loan debt was more important to me before jumping into debt for a master's degree. For commitment, i guess it depends on who is ur partner, in my country a lot of people married in you age ended up being in bad financial life because they didn't prepare for it before, ya i know u'll get married in young age but for me not a lot of people has wise partner or wise mind to decide whether they ready or nah to get married and it affects more when you have a kid or something bad happen in your marriage life.
So i think to talk about getting into commitment as a financial advice, i don't think is a good for everyone to apply
