Here are my thoughts, considering its features like 4k video, shooting 45.7 megapixels, auto focus stacking, etc. I also compare these specs to Canon's current lineup, having been using their 5DS R, 5D Mark IV, and 6D Mark II as of late.

Hey man, I really miss your college vlogs! I found your channel from an NYU vlog and have been subscribed for a couple years. Keep up the good work
You don't need a lot of pixels to shoot billboards. Because of the viewing distance you can shoot billboards with just 4 megapixels.
Thanks for not click-baiting your videos
IMHO the only advantage the Canon has is the dual pixel AF system. If you are not invested in Canon or any other maker/system. The Nikon beats it in every way other than the AF system.
thegeneral123 and only live view focusing.
@thegeneral123. while the Canon is great, the Dual pixel AF system is not the one you will use during normal shooting. The AF system in the Nikon is much better then the Canons through the viewfinder.
I'm fully expecting Canon to release some major products in 2018. They've been holding back on features and technology. They need a mirrorless mid sized camera. They need some APS-C and Full frame cameras with more modern card slots, 4K30-60. More modern file types. Perhaps 10bit colour on an update to the 5DMk4. It's about time Canon stopped holding back features for fear of t affecting the sales of higher priced cameras. Cine in particular.
What is the cheapest camera they do that has 4K? Oh, that's the 5DMk4! My Panasonic GX80 does 4k30 and it cost £400 with cashback.
Since Canon split their photo and cine lines, you can expect less video options in their cameras not more... sorry.
@Abbas Ali
Personally I've always hated Canon colors.
Ok that D850 resolution is undeniable. So unreal. I'm on a 5D mk II and it's more of an emotional attachment at this stage. Either way, our cameras are just tools :)
I don't have these problems. I shoot Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fuji... Each has its strengths and weaknesses, and it's a false dilemma to argue for which one is "best." The word "best" is contextual and depends on what you want to do....
I am panasonic user, i shoot video mostly. but to be honest D850 is the best camera for stills photography on the market at the moment... it's like D5 and D810 combined into a hybrid....no other brand has such specs, surely they will release some competative models soon, but at the moment D850 is clearly the winner, not that the Nikon brand is better than others, but the D850 is better than other models at same price range. You are obviously emotinally atached to cannon, judging from your FIVE post on this video xD
Ever compared your Dynamic range to Nikon?
Screw that, I don't switch brands, I collect them. I find that EVERY single brand is awesome and there's no reason to "switch," because one what one does "well," the other one won't. I own tons of brands and straight up will never "switch." I think that people who do this are limiting themselves.
Michael Grubb I agree but I can understand why some people switch. They may not be able to afford the new system without selling the current. I personally love my Nikon and Sony offerings
The limitation here is the money.
The shot @ 5:25 is beautiful, dude. Reminds me of something by Fred Herzog or a little bit like William Eggleston. Your photos get better every video, it seems like, man.
much appreciated, man!
I'm from the Canon too. I miss Canon color sometimes, but Nikon file is crisps and brighter in low light situation.
Canon glass is better...
canon need's to ditch the AA filter
What???? hahahahahahhaha Canon started as a body camera company, while nikon started as a glass company. Canon glass is waaaay behind nikkor lenses, even 1960's and 70's nikkor lenses, destroy canon glass by far. Who cares if its manual!
lol...thats a joke, right? canon glass is better?
As a canon and sony shooter I agreed , canon glass isn’t the best , but as for price to quality, its quite the better choice
I too was a canon user that recently switched to the d850!
Josh, thank you for a very succinct review. I own the D850 and it was my first Nikon Camera (last camera was Canon). I am an amateur photographer and had the camera for approximately 3 months. I agree with all of your comments. Another small plus is the ability to rate the photos in camera (stars) which can help you later pull out the images you intend of reviewing first (improved work flow). You touched on the option to shot smaller files which for time lapse might be helpful. I'm not sure how you feel about one QxD slot and one SD instead of two QxD. Good job. Well done.
Does the colors in portraits are as bright as for nikon and Canon?
great job josh!!! im lovin my d850...
Hey guys! Here's a directory if you're curious about certain aspects of the D850. Enjoy!
Also, I'm hyped to announce that I've dropped a comprehensive beginner photography course! It's over 9 hours of brand new content and it covers shooting, editing in Lightroom, buying the best gear, and marketing your work online. Check it out here! bit.ly/katzcourse
Thanks for all your support
Josh Katz Please skate at catoctin skatepark in Virginia again! It’s so cool to see someone skateboard the same places as me.
I recently purchased the D850 and I am totally stoked for how good this camera really is. I changed my colour profile to Neutral and then post edit in Lightroom. Also, I have been using my camera mostly for landscapes and the tilting screen is a real time and neck saver. There are so many things you could have talked about, but I think you kinda covered all the new features.
The one thing you did miss was the 8k time lapse and 120FPS. I am not in to doing movies with this camera, but I know some people are and may want to use these features.
I have always been a Nikon user. When I saw all the announcements about the D850, I was just so eager to get my hands on one. I am a D850 fan great camera and this was a great review.
Forgot to mention better dynamic range. Take care!
I've Used both Canon and Nikon and honestly If you are a good photographer you still have my respect regardless what Camera you are using. I use canon now just becuase it suits me more than Nikons did. But thats just an opinion.
yes
Agree with this! I have shot with Sony, Nikon, Canon and Olympus. About a year ago I was given a 5DSR for an assignment and I remembered very quickly why I shot Nikon. I got some great pictures for sure, but I felt like I was constantly fighting against Canon's inferior (to my way of thinking) ergonomics. Others feel the same about Nikon, but the important thing is whatever you like, you can get great shots.
Hope to see more Nikon photos from you in the future... The photos from Israel came out great!
I get why people would jump ship to Sony, but I don't get why you change between Canon and Nikon. I mean if I we're going to get a DSLR I'd get the D850 too. Why did you go with this instead of the A7RIII?
I’ve never had my camera system not make me money. I switch out bodies every 3-4 years. It seems like the noob thing to do switching camera systems. Seriously though, anyone that I’ve met, chatted with at a camera store or hobbyist that changes gear on the reg makes little to no money from photography. They have websites and pricing that proves they know little about how to run a business or how to make an income from being a professional. I shoot to make an income, not to worry what system might slightly do something better than what I currently have and will do in the next iteration. One guy at my local camera store was going on about how tough it is to find work all while in the same conversation talking about wanting to switch to the Sony system. I worked my ass off after college assisting photographers for six years grinding out whatever assistant job or random shoot I could get. I used shit film cameras that made you work for the shot. Todays "photographer" is some kid/noob/momtogs that thinks they can jump into the game without any experience and the latest gear. And for those jokers, I say good luck or go get em champ. lol
f0t0b0y this is the absolute truth!!!!
And what did you acomplish with this comment lmao? Sounds hot
LOL
This reads like the inane ramblings of a boomer. All hail the guy that used a “film” camera.
@@Wolfhammered Why are you so angry?
Any cropped camera can pull off the images you were showing. Didn’t see anything only the Nikon could do. Just personal preference.
Have you ever seen a billboard close up? All you can see is red, green and blue blobs.. Even an 8mp aps-c can shoot billboard sized images.. I believe that the benchmark should be gallery prints..
Hola! You can skip forward/backward 10 pictures when in viewing mode using the front dial (the back dial does one by one). That's how it is on my D7200 in any case.
Don't under estimate the back illuminated buttons. I upgraded from the D750 to the D850 for 2 reasons: Bigger viewfinder and the backlit buttons.
You can set it up to scroll through your shots with the command wheel
You should be able to also use the rear thumb wheel to advance through photos. The D300 through 810 operate this way.
I recently sold my d810 to switch to fuji but everything just felt wrong. Ended up returning the fuji and got the d850. Home sweet home.
Nice review and great photos! I've owned Nikon cameras since my purchase of a brand new Nikon F directly from a seller in Japan while I was still in high school in the early '60s.
I moved from Canon to Nikon and decided to switch back because its not about the latest is the greatest. It is more of a matter of personal choice and level of comfort with the workflow.. Moreover with canon if you take the right exposure the color reproduction is brilliant where as with Nikon you always need to work ....
Congrats
Great photos.
coming from a canon 5d m3 and 5ds owner i have to admit the d850 is tempting i dont know if the price stay the same or decreases im buying by next year i buy it if not i just the canon 5d mark 4 i love the nikon d850 features high mp great dynamic range im not fan the command dial and the buttons placed everywhere but i can adjust v quickly we will see by 2019
I'm hoping to add a D850 to my D750 - I'm a hybrid shooter and actually like the 1080 files that come out of the D750 (see mattias burling D750 review) The focus peaking and touch focus are two things I'm looking forward to.
I am Nikon D810 user. Nice review of D850, thanks for sharing
If silent shooting is a game changer to you, why don't you get the Sony A7Rm3? It can shoot 10fps silent also using the viewfinder. Better AF and less rolling shutter than the D850. Better video codec and you can use all your Canon glass on it :)
I can think of 2 reasons: Form factor. The mirrorless is tiny, and to me without a grip a little uncomfortable. This is obviously personal, and can be fixed with the grip if one so chooses.
2) Weather sealing. If this is important to you, the Sony is out.
Nice review Josh. Love my D850 ;) (miss the Canon dial indeed!) and miss being able to change the iso without having to press a button. But keep on reviewing, you do well!!
i shoot with sony, canon and nikon bodies and they are all great cameras that give excellent results, however my sony SLT A mount camera bodies have two major features that lead the pack, first the Electronic viewfinder that allows you to see the finished product before you actually shoot the image which opens the door for many many other features and second is the body stabilization...........i shoot for pleasure....
Cool video. Not set this way from the factory but you can set the rear commander dial to change photos in preview. Not quite what you get from canon but better than selector switch on back of camera.
Lovely shots in Josh.
Congratulations! Nikon makes great gear, you won't be disappointed. Great video. I subbed.
what were you doing in israel? i live there:) really enjoy your pics and tips! keep up the good work man!
aliyah!
I liked your review. There are other reviewers that say the auto focus for video isn't as good as canon. As a Canon user what is your opinion on this?
good video, you seem like a well educated photographer.
i miss the skating tbh
Fast forward to June 2019. Is the 850 still ahead of the pack?
D850 is a future proof camera, and still is even 2020 the best DSLR ever made.
I am a beginner and really enjoyed you talking about the different aspects, even though I am not even remotely considering spending that much money on a camera ever :D
Feedback:
I would add a visual summary of your pros and cons to wrap up the video.
Looking forward to the stacking tutorial. Keep it up!
Visual summary's a great idea! Thanks man!
Good review, you have strong knowledge of both brands. I wish I could justify upgrading from D810 to D850, but I just can't at the moment. Is there a magic lantern for the D810? Time to research!
What I noticed... your Nikon images look more normal/ natural.. while Canon ones look more processed and pulled the clarity slider to 11...why is that?
1:41 Cartier-Bresson esque 👌
You can swipe left and right to view the images, using buttons just old school lol...
Thanks for your great review. Considering this is your first review you did a great job! May be time to buy an 850 to add to my D4 and D5 collection. The only thing I'm worried about is color matching between the cameras. Does the color match up between the different cameras? PS: What camera did you use to shoot this video? Thanks...
Wow those pictures are dope...
Great video man
Excellent review!
You should skate with Andy and the revive guys soon!
I switched from 5D3 and 7D2, to the D500 and D810, and now the D850. A whole new world. Sony has some fine features, but it is NOT a better camera. Had an a7r3 in my hands yesterday. My hands are large and my middle finger gets crushed between the grip and lens body. It's too darned small, with terrible ergonomics. I'm sure hoping that Nikon doesn't blow their new mirrorless.
Hi Josh Katz. New subscriber here. You can easily scroll through photos at the bottom of your screen when you are in 'photo playback' mode. Just slide your finger to the right or left.
The D850 isn't necessarily a better camera or the best in a single regard. But it's the new unique do-it-all and do-it-all-extremely-well camera.
great video quality
U won't regret smart choice !
good video - nice photos - lots of features to review and you did a good job in my opinion - but a 17 min vid is a bit too long - I watched it by breaking it down ie watching a bit and then tuning in on something on tv etc. thanks for the review
it would be cool if had the screen tilting like the fuji x-t2
idk, i'm thinking of jumping ship, and it doesn't look like Canon will put out a 5dsr mkii that can compare. And the next canon high megapixel camera is rumored to be an RF mount... So if I have to buy a new system based on a new mount, why would I stick with Canon?
love your videos josh
Awesome video!! Can you recommend a great Nikon portrait/wedding lens? I'm a Canon guy typically but I'm making the switch!
Great job. Its like you read all my questions and then shot the video. Now I have to confirm I can't afford one.
Suggestion: Smoke a joint or lay off the caffein Josh.
The autofocus sucks ass on the Nikon D850!! The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV dual pixel AF on video is super buttery smooth!! Totally shits on the D850 all day long! It's all hype with these new bodies from Nikon.
By the way, the Canon 5DSR has more capabilities and megapixels than the D850. The 5DSR has 50 megapixels. SO...
The 5DSR is a studio camera and not versatile, with slow speed, limited ISO, lower DR. The D850 is an overall much more of a do-everything-well camera with excellent IQ.
do a comparison of beginner nikon cameras (eg d3300) and cannon beginner cameras
Bryn Kitchenham Canon 800D smokes any D3400 or D5600 nowadays. Even the Cheaper 200D.
you're exaggerating...Canon cameras only smokes Nikons in live view/ video focusing...Try comparing a lowlight shot with the Nikon d3400/d5600 and the Canon SL2 or even the 80D.. Canon Rebel cameras output very grainy / noisy images in higher ISOs while the Nikons give you cleaner and sharper photos. See this image comparison on dpreview between Canon SL2 and 80D vs Nikon d3400 and D7500 at ISO 6400: bit.ly/2BSjxcB.... See the noise difference!
Please get a 500px profile. Your images are way beyond Instagram league. That said, I am more than fully satisfied with my d810.
Hey Josh 🤪 Would you please tell me what camera and light(s) you used to filmed this VDO? Everything including you looked super awesome. I suppose there might be natural light coming from a window or a door on the left side! Thank you!
Shot this with a Canon 6D Mark II and 16-35mm Mark III lens. Lighting was a bit sloppy b/c I shot with natural light AND one video light, which is this guy: amzn.to/1Rbd3Zs
hope this helps!
D850 can’t do exposure more than 30 seconds?
A mobile phone camera can take those snapshots you are showing.
King Nothing lol stfu
Canon just wants people to buy they’re video cameras. I went to Nikon and they’re great. Canon does portraits very well. Like the skin tones. Just wish they would add 4K to they’re newer DSLRs.
4k will be added to all the mirrorless versions and new releases. I believe they have an announcement this year at photokina
so nikon is not good for portraits compared to canon?
Start posting more. Great vids
I like my 5d mark 4 to much
Maybe one day you might acknowledge someone's comment dude.
So you reviewed this camera which seems really nice. But did you actually switch?
Super
Good video. Bro any idea when is the d760 releasing?
I prefer to do switch tricks...
nikon bodies - canon lenses. please make them interchangeable lol
Sk8 video !!!
Have you tested and reviewed the newer sony camera like A7riii or A9. And what do you think of those camera? Thx✌
I have a Sony a6000
I'd say that Canon's equivalent is the 1DX M2 and not the 5D
Definitely would be an interesting comparison. I mostly wanted to explore the high megapixel DSLR market here, since there is no perfect Canon equivalent to the D850. The 1DX Mark II certainly has some more competitive specs, but at 20.2 mp and $5500, it's another beast.
Josh Katz yes you're right :)
Keep up the good content!
GaspardMY the equivalent of the 1DX M2 is the D5, then is 5D M4 vs D850, 7D M2 vs D500, 80D vs D7500 and so on
Amateurs switch back and fourth between systems.
"Forth", but so do professionals (See Dustin Abbott switching from Canon to Sony, along with many others).
I went from 30+ years of contented Canon shooting to a D810 because Canon just couldn't compete in low iso, high res, no-anti-aliasing DSLR with a ,modern sensor, but I much prefer Canon colours, especially in skin tones and more importantly for me as a landscaper, in their rendering of blue sky. Nikon are way too cyan/green in balance, lacking proper red content, and also blow sky highlights much earlier than Canon and Sony with identical exposures.
I really hope Canon brings out a 5DsR mk2 with about 40-50MP, 4k 30- and 60 fps full frame video, IBIS, and an electronic viewfinder with focus peaking, better dynamic range, and a base iso of about 50. I will be happy to come back, but these last couple of years they don't really have a horse in t he race for landscapers wanting to print big and have good shadow recovery/low noise.
Congratulations, the best move you'll make for stills, I made the change in 2012, switching over to the D600& D800. I've never looked back, and will never go back to SHITTY CANON ever again. Just sold my D600 to buy a D750, and my D800 to order the D850.
Jas Mann show me your photos fanboy
forisnakiu how did I know it would be a Canon fanboy that gets so butt hurt 😃😅😂
the gear doesnt make shitty photos the photographer does... EVERY photographer youtuber says that ... dont blame the gear
JohnPaul Sein show me where in my statement, I blamed the gear for shitty photos. I've shot canon my whole life, but just got fed up with the expensive bodies and L lens, and the lack of innovation, therefore, having tried the Nikon D800 in 2012, I was hooked. Because ì said 'shitty Canon", that was my way of expressing that I'm fed up and bored with Canon. So for the "numnuts" who referred to me as a "Nikon fanboy", I've shot Canon for 30 years, man & boy, film and digital.
Jas Mann "Shitty Canon" btw I chose Nikon I'm not saying you are a shitty photographer not by any means just fyi
1080 at 120 FPS**
Will there be a vlog for Israël
Not sure why but you are moving all over
Wow....someone who's not switching to Sony!
Hey man, stop shaking and moving ur head too much...very distracting!! Lol
🔥🔥🔥
Nothing is sick about these shoots in my opinion.
average shots that dont scream D850 at all.
Good video, thank you. I have to say that I consider your move from Canon to Nikon a wise one. Over the years I have owned 7 x Canon SLR/DSLR cameras, 4 x Olympus SLR/DSLR cameras plus a couple of other makes. A couple of years ago I sold my Canon 7D mark II and 70D and bought my very first Nikon - a D500 as well as a couple of Olympus EM1's. I still have my brilliant D500 but sold my EM1's and bought an EM1 mark II. I doubt I will ever return to the Canon brand: I believe Canon has fallen too far behind to catch up with Nikon, Olympus or Sony, let alone exceed them.
You lost me at 3:57 seconds when you said "every mega pixel matters for billboard size" commercial work because this is entirely wrong.
That's an issue of printing, and the distance an image is viewed at and still remain "sharp" at that particular predetermined distance. A properly composed, and post-processed, 20 mega pixel image is absolutely fine for a billboard. Further study seems to be required in your case.
No idea what you said after this... but hope you didn't continue with misinformation.
I know, its hip and shall prove some coolness these day to contineously move the body and keeping the hands fly around. But personally I find those vids hart to watch cause it hurts in the eyes and then in the brain. Thats why I drop out at half time of your vid
Torsten Lange what in the hell did u just say? U don’t make sense dude
Gaming Chan: You're on drugs? Go gaming in hell.
Torsten Lange I agree, although I like the overall content especially since I'm a Nikon shooter...I'm also trained entertainment professional for 30 years. What on camera spokesman (and women) must learn is to sit still!
You use the word "huge" WAY too much.
Nikon is just better
I just watched your 6D Mk 2 review from December. What happened? Why the change?
hahaha he just GAS victim, he will switch again soon
שלום ג'וש, תודה לך על הווידאו ושיהיה לך בהמון הצלחה, נרשמתי לערוץ שלך :-) ואני בטוח אלמד המון.
שבת שלום.
