  • What is democracy? What is freedom? What do these ideas mean to individuals, to communities?
Join Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones in conversation with Howard University constitutional law professor Lisa Crooms-Robinson to explore democracy through the lens of "The 1619 Project," the award-winning reframing of American history that placed slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative.
The event is organized by the Howard University School of Law, Howard's Cathy Hughes School of Communications, the Pulitzer Center, and Penguin Random House.
This event will focus on “Democracy,” chapter 1 of "The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story," as the first of six culminating events of "The 1619 Project Read Along: A Classroom Without Walls,” launched in October 2022.

Agreed: the sound quality is poor. Friendly suggestion: to the right of the "share" button are three dots. Click on those dots and among the available options is "show transcript." Click that and the transcript pops open to the right. You can copy and paste the transcript into a document and read this conversation rather than listen to it.

Is it possible to fix the sound on this recording? I can barely understand the speakers and the CC is also being hampered by the bad sound.

The sound quality makes it difficult to hear.

Yes, that is true, but it is still comprehensible if you concentrate and listen closely.

The sound is pretty poor quality on this one unfortunately. Deterrent from listening. I’ve watched at least 15 other appearances.

This is Howard darling, they should have an excellent sound system. #1619project. I think It's inaudible by design. Too echoey :(

I have written to several chief editors at the New York Times about this video. No way to contact the author, and the video could not be in this state if she would care if I could. It is not possible to make it out at all, it is completely disrespectful to the public trying to learn more about the topic, and from the comments one can plainly see that it isn't able to provoke any meaningful discussion; we have two racist statements and two complaints that we can't understand the video, and noone else even tried. I was excited to learn more about the topic, but may not even be back for part two. I think the New York Times will be very disappointed a the project was a great idea and got a massive amount of public interest.

I to am finding it impossible to understand people speaking on this video. The sound quality is terrible! Does it not matter or something? Why bother to do this if it doesn't even matter if anybody can understand it.

If Nikole Hannah-Jones finds it hard to be patriotic and love this great country of ours, she is free to go to other countries to live in, e.g. Africa or her mother's roots in Czech Republic and the UK. But she should not slander this country of ours and cause divisions in our society, or she will be scorned and ridiculed by patriots of this great country the USA.

Too bad Black people are the most patriotic that’s why we are fighting our country To live up to its ideals while staying here. We will not run like cowards, we have just as much claim to this country as you do. We literally came here the minute y’all did .

Her ancestors never asked to be here! Her family was brought here! Don't forget her ancestors literally BUILT this great country that you enjoy so much! Building awareness and revealing our collective unhealed trauma is NOT the same as sowing divisions! Let your defensive feelings go, listen up and do the right thing! So we all can enjoy this country that seems to be so great for just some!!!! 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳

Racism is so American that if you fight racism, people think you're fighting America. AmeriKKKans love a lie and hate the truth.

It would be a great country if there were far less of your kind in it. Being patriotic, in this country means appreciation of diversity and having respect for one another. This country definitely suffers due to white supremacists ideology. You do not have the right to tell another American to love it or leave it. This is OUR messed up country. You should leave it so the rest of us can have a chance at making it a truly great country

I can't think of a more patriotic group of Americans than Black Americans. Didn't get full rights till 1965 but spent centuries fighting wars for freedoms that they didn't receive
