Wolfgang was in the band for about a week at this point, and he built the drum pads 3 days before this performance. I read about this on his biography. He goes in depth about the concerts
This version is actually a hybrid of Heimatklänge and Tanzmusik. The backing chords and flute notes are from Heimatklänge (which is a much mellower song) while the keyboard melody and electronic drums are from Tanzmusik. Very cool how they could combine these two songs into one.
they are the fathers of 'Techno' 'Electronic' styles, i m sure there could be others too, but these guys have strange melody, no matter what decade you are, even 1970 doesn't matter, it yields to every generation and my favorite is the vocoder part. Their experiments can be used as lessons in today's world for making melodious stuff. thx for this upload and thx Kraftwerk, love your music always :)
This is the best video EVER. Everything about it is so gloriously pleasing. Everyone looks wonderful. The typography at the end of the show is amazing. So classic! And Wolfgang is the most beautiful man...
Ralf with long hair and Florian with *any* hair! Plus Wolfgang "the Ringo Starr of Kraftwerk" Flür (quote: Wolfgang Flür) looking like a Thunderbirds puppet playing a biscuit tin lid. And it's a classically beautiful variation on the album version with shades of "Tongebirge"... The speaker sounds *very* like the voices of "News" from "Radio-Activity" - maybe the style of voice of news radio at the time. Except the Bavarian one. ;)
It's wonderful to listen how their music developed from the very experimental, but fascinating 'Tone Float' to this song, which is quite reminiscent of the master piece that was to follow. But what makes this video great is that it shows their already elaborate use of electronics. Just look at the number of cables and sockets they had to use for this! And Wolfgang Flür had \joined the group by this time!
What an amazing piece of history. This is the exact television appearance that wolfgang flur talked about in his book. It's a truly great experience to see what they really preformed like before they became famous.
I didn't even realize that there were already electronic drum pads in 1973! These guys were cutting edge pioneers of electronic music! This song reminds me of stuff that my friends and I used to create when jamming in the 80s and 90s. It trips me out to hear this early stuff that sounds so much like music that I use to create years ago. I had heard of Kraftwerk in the early 80s, but I had maybe only heard one of their songs until now. :-o
Just realising : at 3:50 how Ralf mutes the beautiful drone the Minimoog produces almost the entire song, giving the bass for this amazing song. Kraftwerk, heros since my four years old, thank you.
During that time period, to me Ralf looked like Walter "Radar" O'Reilly with long hair, and Florian looked like Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce from MASH. But back then I smoked a lot of weed during those days when I was a teen listening to Kraftwerk in the early mid 70's. And of course their albums after Autobahn.
The further back in time i go listening to Kraftwerk songs, the more ahead of their time they become!!! Just awe inspiring! Music without melody is nothing. Kraftwerk ARE melody!!
Yes remember that this was -73 they had the music in their heads. but no electronic equipment was available. so they built thier own machines! outstanding :) sweden fan
Ich bin so dankbar für diesen Ausschnitt. ich hatte die Platte damals "Ralf & Florian" in der Hand und dummerweise wieder ins Regal gestellt. Heute kann ich mich dafür ohrfeigen.
Really incredible! So along ago, a great part of future was written by them, almost anonimously... Nowadays we can see a bit of the primary effects of the progression, evolution, the development of th recorded idea, the initial concept, fist steps of the these big dream called 'Future'... Exequiel from Buenos Aires, Argentina
It's young Wolfgang Flür, their long-time electronic drummer until 1990, who had just joined the duo after the recording of their "Ralf & Florian" album in 1973.
Thanks! I became a fan in the early 80s when I was in high school, but just found a video from 1971. It was fantastic!! I'm going to explore the earlier work more.
Das ist ein Beispiel für absolute richtungsweisende musikalische Kunst..... Wunderbar, gehört zu meiner Jugend wie zum momentanen Dasein..... geil, einfach geil.....
I'm glad I came across this video...This gives me a whole new perspective on Kraftwerk...I just rediscovered them all over again!!...Beautiful!... Just beautiful!! Thanks for uploading this!!...
an incredible creative moment in time, refining and defining their future sound, whats so magical is its kind of wagnerian and childlike at the same time..sublime genius, understated and yet epic..and what the future would bring in terms of influencing future generations x
This was the beginning of electronic and technosound which was made in Germany. In time of Abba and other folksmusic in the 70s, Kraftwerk shows new ways of music and this was the base for todays electronic clubmusic. Thanks to Kraftwerk for this beautiful revolutionary music style!
@electro257 Thanx for enlightening me, I never heard this before. I grew up in the 80's listening to rap and in the 90's electronica. This music explains a lot. Im a new fan of the talented KW.
@Detroit8V92tta I think the metal foil is there as an electronic contact hence why the sticks have wires. I think it works a lot like how a stylophone works but with the synthesizer generating a noise wave at different pitches instead of a square or triangular tone.
Wolfgang was in the band for about a week at this point, and he built the drum pads 3 days before this performance. I read about this on his biography. He goes in depth about the concerts
Wolfgang was a carpet maker and a drummer. I don't think he made this electronic drum. But he obviously contributed to its development with his ideas.

Florian really is an excellent flautist. I wish he still played it.
kinda dead now though
Vila i frid
Now he's playing harp

Schneider's flute-work is beautiful
This is the best video EVER. Everything about it is so gloriously pleasing. Everyone looks wonderful. The typography at the end of the show is amazing. So classic! And Wolfgang is the most beautiful man...
+Zeta 21 Gaming ;) He is handsome too, but I adore Wolfgang playing the homemade drum pad.
What a gem - you can always come back to these guys and enjoy their stuff as if you were hearing it for the first time!
Yeah Florian! You kick ass with that flute!

They are beautiful.
When they were young very handsome dudes
What an amazing piece of history. This is the exact television appearance that wolfgang flur talked about in his book. It's a truly great experience to see what they really preformed like before they became famous.
I can't even imagine hearing this if I was alive in 1973. My brain would have imploded.
I heard Autobahn when it came out and I’m still here!❤
I get Goosebumps when I hear this Song! Man, it's so wonderful!
wolfgang...... you rock that moustache
so young and confused

Wow, this music made all my thoughts go blank, just by listening to it and watching the clip. Absolutely amazing music.

wonderful traditional german music!
RIP, Florian Schneider.

I love all their stuff, but this is from my favorite period of theirs. Thanks for posting. Too bad it wasn't longer!
Love this. Been into kraftwerk since i was fourteen (now 47) and never seen such an early performance. Pure quality.
That suit that Florian is wearing is brilliant. The musical note on the lapel, awesome musicians with a sense of humor.
They are like beautiful extra-terrestrial playing a cosmic music.
5 stars !
such a cool drum machine.
The further back in time i go listening to Kraftwerk songs, the more ahead of their time they become!!!

FLORIAN!!! GENIO!
Ich bin so dankbar für diesen Ausschnitt. ich hatte die Platte damals "Ralf & Florian" in der Hand und dummerweise wieder ins Regal gestellt. Heute kann ich mich dafür ohrfeigen.
I fell in love recently. And you know what, this is what it felt like.Love made sound.
I had their 'Rolf & Florian' album with this track on cassette in 1979. Great stuff.
The first works needed to jump into the future, I loved them so much when I was very young
It’s amazing...
YEAH WE GET IT FLORIAN YOU CAN PLAY FLUTE
lol
Yes Xavier Levesque, Florian CAN play flute. And you, what can you do besides trolling on the internet?
@Halliwellsson sorry florian... rip :(
Flute was the first instrument play by ralf
Really incredible! So along ago, a great part of future was written by them, almost anonimously... Nowadays we can see a bit of the primary effects of the progression, evolution, the development of th recorded idea, the initial concept, fist steps of the these big dream called 'Future'...

That's quite the lil drumset there. He loves it! ^_^
The beauty in the science of music. These guys are legendary.
True Pioneers, worlds first pure techno band.
Oh, cool. This is by far the earliest work of theirs I've seen. Love the early electronic drums! I didn't know they existed that early.
Das ist ein Beispiel für absolute richtungsweisende musikalische Kunst..... Wunderbar, gehört zu meiner Jugend wie zum momentanen Dasein..... geil, einfach geil.....
Excellent. A piece of history for the generations to come.

This was the beginning of electronic and technosound which was made in Germany. In time of Abba and other folksmusic in the 70s, Kraftwerk shows new ways of music and this was the base for todays electronic clubmusic.
Thanks to Kraftwerk for this beautiful revolutionary music style!
The juxtoposition of Florian's flute with the beat and the electronic piano is beautiful-as it is at the end of the "First movement" of Autobahn.
the original pioneers of electronic music. these guys defined a genre. pure genius.
I dont believe 40 years has already passed by....
and I still love this vinil a lot.
Simply BRILLANT. Kraftwerk was (i will be) GREAT forever. Thanks for share it. +10!
You're definitely right on with that description. Interesting to see such old footage.

I kraftwerk sono semplicemente sublimi
Magnifique!!! Merci.
Incredible clip. Thanks for posting.
favolosi! kraftwerk are the godfather of elektropop. Un appassionato saluto da Ravenna, Italien. God save Germany
@Detroit8V92tta I think the metal foil is there as an electronic contact hence why the sticks have wires. I think it works a lot like how a stylophone works but with the synthesizer generating a noise wave at different pitches instead of a square or triangular tone.
Well,we don't dissagree,I was just amazed of finding the source to the beat that was bouncin' trough all the early 80's post-punk! :-)
This really sounds nice actually! They played lots of flute and steel guitar in those days - amazing the sounds they still got!
Beautiful video. So awesome.
this is lovely to my ears x
tender music
The piano sound is produced by the Farfisa Electric Piano, and the other keyboard I think it's Minimoog synthesizer! ;)
Thanks. I was wondering what that keyboard is. Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark use it on Loud and Clear.
The four of them had those blue neon name signs on the stage when they played my high school in 1975.
約40年前でこれは素晴らしい。
I'll still be listening in 2073...
