For someone who was exposed to the Westwood games before the Frank Herbert novels, I find it hard to believe that blue really wasn't the Atreides color, but black and green.

As a Scots gal, I immensely enjoyed hearing bagpipes in a big film. I've never felt a surge of energy like that before at the pictures. The pipes are such an undervalued instrument, especially for this type of effect.
The funny thing is, in the making off by Hans Zimmer it was revealed there were no beg pipes used. It was a guitar and an instrument invented by Zimmer.

Which is basically what the Setting was but it does lean on the Islamic part, the Empire in Dune is what happens when you combine the HRE, The British Empire, the Persian Empires and the Ottomans together and put them into Space in the Middle of the Rise of Islam.
Interesting that the Atreides color scheme seemed to relate to Islamic dynasties. Black is usually synonymous with the Abbasid Caliphate. Green was used extensively, particularly by the Ottomans, Safavid, and Mughal. The red eagle of House Atreides seemed reminiscent of the Eagle of Saladin which if I'm not mistaken is red on the background of yellow.
Exactly what I'm thinking. Not to mention the crescent symbol is also closely linked to islamic nation. In the new movie Lady Jessica's attire upon arriving on Arrakis also look similiar to Indian style dress.

Canonically, House Atriedes has always "claimed" to trace it's ancestry back to the ancient Greek warrior Agamemnon. The truth of this claim is unknowable, as the location of Ancient Earth has long been lost since the War of The Machines and the Butlerian Jihad. In real life, the Latin name for Scotland was "Caledonia", and in Dune, the Atreides homeworld is called "Caladan". Finally, the bagpipe in one form or another has existed across almost every European culture since the late Bronze Age. It is believed that the Imperial Romans brought it to Brittania when they conquered it.
Interestingly bagpipes actually appear in many cultures, including ancient Greece, to which the Atreides trace themselves. Sadly we never hear bagpipes in historically themed music for them, because it doesn't fit the hollywood image
