Dragonball Z Kai - Blu Ray or DVD? Which Should You Buy?
Unfortunately if you're trying to get the Blu-Rays this time around, you're gonna have a rough time finding a complete set because for some reason The Final Chapters Part 1 has been really hard to find on Blu-Ray, and when it has, it's been very expensive
Happy to see I’m not the only one struggling. I’m about to buy the dvd on target just in case I can never find a blu ray version.
@@BobbyNuggins lol I think i stumbled into a crap fest then. I just started with Season 1 and I'm struggling to find a blu ray of season 2. My only options are DVD or blu ray from another country.
@@LightxAngelxDark same. Good luck buddy
The final chapters are on sale at my local JB HiFi at $17 aud a pop, compared to Ebay which is at $75 aud.
I’m thinking of just getting Final Chapter part one on DVD and two and three on Blu-ray. For some reason it’s only part one that’s impossible to find, the other two are on Amazon
God bless you for this perfect comparison. Exactly what I was looking for.
I’m getting the DVD part sets rn since they have the television score as opposed to the replaced score because Yamamoto stole music. I’m also gonna watch the dvds on my crt to get an authentic experience
Same. Watching Dragon Ball Kai or Z in 1080p doesn't look as good vs seeing it downcovered to 480I on a CRT display IMO. Hell, i prefer VHS to even DVD, because it helps softens the lines and makes the animation/characters look more organic.
@@NintenPizza that’s because they don’t put in that effort to actually remaster the animation like what dc did with BTAS and Superman the animated series.
@@trashboat5388 the first 98 were good tho
You can actually get a blue ray player with component and and s-video outputs and still watch the cleanest footage while watching it on a crt tv 📺 👍🏽
@@robinson32993there are also HD CRTs in 4:3
This is an excellent comparison, I appreciate it. I've been debating on saving some money with buying the DVDs since sometimes they're way cheaper than the BDs (and right now Kai season 4 on Blu-Ray is very expensive). The BDs are unsurprisingly significantly better looking, so I think it'll be worth grabbing them, but I gotta say I'm surprised that the DVDs don't look too shabby judging from the footage you've provided. Unfortunately the resolution downgrade makes a huge difference
Relatable
I really wanted a bluray version....
I like the version with the Kai Soundtracks more than the Z soundtracks
True true true. Makes the series much more cinematic, although the Kikuchi score defiantly brings the king fu aspects more.
I have no feedback on something that is already almost perfect
You're going to make me blush, you gentleman.
Get a training room you guys!!
Awesome video sir . Straight to the point . Thanks 🫡
Blu-ray, there are no questions to ask. It costs €30 for a single blu-ray deck. They all read the quality of the CD, the difference is made on my settings, the sound part and the Hollywood mastering on certain Panasonic players. These are the greatest contributions when it comes to practicality and reading speed is surely one of them.
Awesome video. Just what i needed to maje sure i don't regret my desicion 🙏 thanks so much
I know it's super Petty but does the Blu Ray version have the Vic Mignogna version of Dragon Soul? I Really don't want wanna but the Blu-rey or DvD and find out it's the Sean Schemmel version of that amazing intro, personally I Hate Seans version of Dragon Soul
I dunno but someone might answer you
I have the dvds and I all I know is some episodes have Vic and some don’t. Not sure if this applies to blu rays but they might be the same thing.
thanks for this, i fucking hate why watching and buying anime is such an ordeal, dubs no dubs english dub, resolutions grain, aspect ratio, jesus christ, terrible business and marketing practices, they could really blow it up if they manage their releases properly, i cant even own a proper version of saint seiya
If only z had a continuous blu ray like this...
amazon has got u
@@NickRigali What I meant was a good blu ray release like the blue ray release kai got. Most of z's remasters and blu ray are shit.
@@evangaming5416 Yeah you right. I got the amazon exclusive blue ray set and its solid for what it is. The audio is whats really good but visually its definitely lacking. I'm more of a Kai fan anyway so I need a Blue Ray Kai set asap haha.
@@NickRigali Lol, yeah. Tho from what I know the quality of kai dropped in the buu saga with the final chapters. But from what I've seen the footage is still better than any z blu ray that gets to the buu saga. Also, what do you mean by "Amazon exclusive" blu ray?
@@evangaming5416it was a Blu ray Boxset, its just the 2014 Blu rays but complete with outer cardboard piece.
Dragon Ball kai has a great soundtrack, but if you follow the news, The soundtrack of this anime was allegedly plagiarized,They hastily changed the soundtrack in episode 97,and they urgently recalled the bd versions of episodes 1 through 54 and replaced them with the old soundtrack。There is no new soundtrack for episodes 55-98 in the bd version.I just happened to see these messages in the forum, and I don't know if they are true or not。。。。。。so how is the soundtrack of the kai compared to the z?(I am using translation software to translate so please forgive my grammatical errors。。。。。 😆😆
bro i jus got the blu ray version and it’s so clean bruh
So clean it did the dishes
which one you think was more like the nicktoons dbzkai, i was thinking of boxset but yk couldn’t hurt to know
For the Kai parts 1-8, is the anime in 16:9 ? I’m asking because when aired in Japan, they show it in 16:9 from Raditz to Buu, which kind of stinks since for the US release, the quality isn’t consistent, and especially with the Final Chapters. :p
All of Kai was broadcasted with the footage cropped to a 16:9 aspect ratio in Japan, but home releases for the first 98 episodes had the show formatted to its original 4:3 aspect ratio, making the home release of the remaining 69 episodes (61 for the Japanese version), aka The Final Chapters, stand out even more because they still have the footage cropped to 16:9.
@@theassortedhobbyist - Man, that really stinks. :p I guess the format is only consistent when you get the DVD releases for eps 1-98. Aren’t the DVDs in 16:9 ?
@@JuniorRDZ04 Nope, from the DVDs to the Blu-rays, Kai’s first 98 episodes were formatted back to 4:3.
@@theassortedhobbyist - Hmm. I thought the DVDs were 16:9
@@JuniorRDZ04 You’re possibly thinking of either the orange brick DVDs for Z or the first Blu-ray set for Z because those cropped the whole show to 16:9. With the exception of The Final Chapters episodes, every home media release of Kai had the show in 4:3.
Blue ray wins
Got the whole series on dvd for 35 dollars. Went looking for blu rays and one season cost almost as much. I’ll stick with the dvds.
You have the Yamamoto score version of DB Kai.
Im sorry for asking, i was about to buy db kai dvd for a present.. is there a different kind of release with different content like the score out there? What do you think is the best version of db kai dvd?
@@keypath4389 when DB Kai was first being released the music was made by Kenji Yamamoto but they found out that he had plagiarized most of the music he made for the show so they had to fire him. All later releases made after 2012 have a replacement score by Shunsuke Kikuchi, the composer for the original DBZ music. Now it is very difficult to find the releases with the original music.
@@natahndolar2142 ah I see! I've heard abouth the news. So is the kinkuchi score version is actually a NEW score made for KAI or they just use the old score kinkuchi made for DBZ?
Edit: sorry for mispronouncing Kikuchi with Kinkuchi..
@@keypath4389 they used the same soundtrack they used for DBZ, the only difference is that they use a very limited version of the score so the music can get very repetitive at times.
If only they whouldnt be that expensive. Sets you over 200€ back if you wanna have the full Series
It might seem a lot but you only have to get them all once. If you buy it over the span of a year that's less than 20 pounds a month
FynnFTW I ordered the complete series on DVD (I prefer dvd over blue ray) for $60 brand new
In germany you pay 60€ for 16 episodes
It's $25 for about 25 episodes. That's pretty fucking fair.
@@majinish Why do you prefer DVD?
If I were to get any of these home releases of Kai will I get Yamamoto or Kikuchi?
I think the uk has yamamaoto while the us has kikuchi
Parts 1-4 of Kai have the Yamamoto Score. Some versions of part 5 have the Yamamoto score, others have the kikuchi. Parts six, seven, and eight all have kikuchi though.
The seasons sets also only have the kikuchi score
That's strange. Because I own a UK press of season 1 of kai on dvd and it comes with the Yamamoto score.
I thought it was gonna be widescreen... makes it harder to decide
Later on around the android saga it is
AxoniusRex Well, that’s good
You do realise that the top and bottom of the image get cut off if you watch it in widescreen.
@@AxoniusRex wait, I thought only the final chapter part that is on widescreen, iirc the android saga and frieza saga is still true 4:3, or may be i forgot..
The Blu-ray version is actually 2.25x the resolution of the DVD.
Can you link where you bought the Blu-ray version of Kai?
Just search it on amazon
Is the aspect ratio for the dvd 16:9 and the blu-ray 4:3? Which music composer is used for the dvd and blu-ray's?
They're both 4:3. It's the kai score it's not the bruce falconer music
@@AxoniusRex I see. I believe the Japanese broadcast for Kai was 16:9, but 4:3 for the home releases. I knew that Faulconer doesn't do the music for Kai. I was curious if versions you have were either the Kenji Yamamoto or Shunsuke Kikuchi's background music score. But sounds to me that both of your sets carry the Yamamoto score. The season sets these days have the replaced Kikuchi scorce like mine.
AxoniusRex, is it true that the final chapters are cropped and not 4.3
@@Addicted2Battle It is true. The first 98 episodes of Kai are 4:3, where as the episodes of The Final Chapters are 16:9
V, thats so dumb why did they change it, i hate the orange bricks/blu ray season sets cause they are cropped if they were 4.3 it would have been perfect, i was thinking of buying the kai set but if the final chapters are cropped then there is no point
Does it have Japanese voices in it too?
Off course it does
@@dbzfanboi3022 And subittles in english??
Is the dvd uncut, in that it has both blood and swearing?
Everything I’ve read about them says they’re uncut. Apparently that stuff was only censored in the Nicktoons airing.
Dragon Ball Kai/Dragon Ball Z Kai is ALMOST accurate to the Dragon Ball manga. And here is why: because the character's names are wrong and Japanese words are not translated in English (For examples: "Kame House" should be translated as "Turtle House" and Son Goku should be called Goku Son), the colors (Including the characters' colors) are not manga-accurate, filler characters are not completely edited out and sagas from Dragon Ball (From the Emperor Pilaf saga all the way to the Piccolo Jr. saga) are not featured. The Dragon Ball anime needs another re-cut/remake so it can be called just simply Dragon Ball and not Dragon Ball Kai and the anime can be 100% accurate to the original Dragon Ball manga where the manga sagas from Dragon Ball and the manga sagas from Dragon Ball Z are all in one anime instead of being split into two separate animes. That way the new Dragon Ball anime can be 100% accurate to the Dragon Ball manga because Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z were one manga in Japan. Makes sense, right? Dragon Ball Kai/DBZ Kai was rushed.
I like manga accuracy but I don’t think they would ever do this. I mean what’s the point? It’s only a few little differences.
What you're asking for is meaningless changes.
But Kame House was always printed in English on the house itself even in the Japanese manga print. If they wanted it to be called Turtle House, the print on the house would have been Turtle House. Son Goku is the correct formality as Japanese use Surname first then First name. What you want are LITERAL translations. What we have are formalities that are kept accurate.
If a Japanese person introduced himself as Son Goku, which is traditionally correct, would you, correct him by saying, NO, it is Goku Son in English!!
is there blood in one of the versions??
Yeah I'm pretty sure these are the uncut versions of Kai, meaning there's blood and cussing.
Kai was only censored on Nick toons, every other version has all the blood and bruising from Z.
The only instance of censorship is in the scene where Piccolo shoots a hole through Goku's and Radditz's chests. The blood was removed and instead left a black hole. This is in all versions of Kai and unavoidable. Modern censorship in Japanese production is just a little bit higher than it was in the 80's.
It's a small and singular instance, so it's something I can live with.
@@ericstaples7220 thats isn't censorship, in the manga, there isn't blood in that scene
@@miru_vt9878 Well there was in the original Z
@@PrinceFloof I know, But Dragon Ball Z Kai was created to be more like the original manga
i need this dvd how to buy
Amazon
I got the entire DBZ Kai series on eBay for $60. You can also find all 9 of the Orange Bricks for $70-$80, too.
The franchise is actually called Dragon Ball
Bro wtf😂
I do hate kai but I’ll buy the Blu-ray because it has better audio and pure 1080pHD and I’ll buy the new blu ray if dragon ball z by toei animation and I’ll buy dragon ball and GT including the movies and DBS broly movie but I hope it contains the 2 hour uncut extended edition
Why you hate Kai?
