Fan Psychology with Dr Stephen Reysen | Global Psychology

"The Global Psychology" is a series of meetings where researchers from all over the world share with us their experiences and scientific reports in the field of psychology. The meeting is organised by the Internationalisation Team of the Institute of Psychology at the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. The meeting is addressed to the entire academic community: students, PhD students and faculty.

Abstract:
Fans are enthusiastic and ardent supporters of a particular interest. Most people think of sport when they imagine a fan and miss that people can be fans of pretty much anything (e.g., politics, ramen noodles). The internet has provided fans of more niche interests that are geographically disparate a place to gather and share their passion. This has also provided psychologists a way to reach these communities to conduct research. In the present talk I discuss my academic exploration of fans in general, but also specific fan communities: anime fans (fans of Japanese animation and comics), furries (fans of media with anthropomorphic characters), and bronies (fans of the television show My Little Pony). I highlight common psychological processes across fan groups, as well as some potential idiosyncrasies.
