I’m an experienced homemade vanilla extract maker and I recommend using a seam ripper to split your beans. It is easier, safer, and you don’t cut your beans completely in half. Experiment with different types of alcohols. It’s a great hobby!
Absolutely not, you can use any type of alcohol you like. Vodka is just a neutral flavor where the vanilla comes through clean. Rum and Bourbon are excellent twists to vanilla extract. In fact, I will be doing a bourbon video soon. Stay tuned!
You can make extract without using alcohol. You can also extract using Glycerin. It may take longer but it's an alternate extract method without alcohol.

Excellent tip, thank you! Yes, thinking about bourbon as the next trial run.

Where are the vanilla beans purchased from? TIA
Purchased on Amazon. Vanilla Bean King is the company. These are grade A whole vanilla beans.
