  • Welcome everyone! This is Planet Dirt - My Backyard Garden. I am growing in Zone 7b, in a small, suburban, backyard garden. I am able to produce a surprising amount of veggies for me and my family in a small space, and I love experimenting with new varieties. This is my food growing journey!
Today is an exciting day, it's the first of many seed starting days for this growing season! We are going to get some onion seeds started and I have a germination test for some Lemon Squash seeds I saved from last year.

If you are using shelves for planting racks, tow straps work well to hold florescence lights. Easy to adjust. I have used bricks to raise the lights before I got the bakers rack.

I don't have racks for indoors yet, so I am thinking of just using 2x4 and something like bricks to adjust on either side. Fingers crossed I can find something lying around the house!

@@planetdirtbackyardgarden That is how I started out. But when you up pot it does get a little tricky. I have also used books. Baker racks are easier when using straps to adjust lights.

@growyourownfood7814 yeah I have been making it work for the last few years but it gets harder and harder to monitor the more seeds I'm starting. 😅

I will be planting my tomato seeds either today or tomorrow. Then Wednesday morning we are supposed to be 12 or 13 degrees with 5 inches of snow. Be interesting to see how my carrots, onions, broccoli, and citrus survive. I covered my citrus but the rest are on their own. Seems weird to be planting my tomatoes but it is time for us.

So exciting! We have a shorter growing season here but with the greenhouse extension I am going to be starting peppers in about a month, which is super cool 😎
