I really enjoyed this interview. I'm glad you found someone who's into vocal science like you are. It was very informative listening to you girls talk about vocalization and vocal care. As well as other things like "shatter me", I love that song but had no idea that was her vocals. Thank you for all that you do here. I really appreciate you.

I worked a Halestorm show as security a few years back. I’ve got to say that Lzzy doesn’t put herself on a pedestal. She’s very level-headed and respectful and treats everyone as if they’re on the same “tier” as she is. It was very refreshing compared to a lot of other artists that I’ve worked with / for.

@@TheCharismaticVoice Of course I'm far from being an expert but I always thought the straw thing was a normal tool of speech therapy. After my girlfriend had to have her cervical spine removed, her vocal chords were paralysed during the operation. So she had to take speech and language therapy to regain her voice. And one of the things she had to do twice a day was to speak and make noises through a straw. The straw had to be put into a cup with water, probably to increase counter pressure.
It worked very well, after half a year or so she could even sing again.

I love hearing Rockers discussing their trials and how they overcame. The industry creates an image where our heroes and Icons are indestructable, especially in the sex and drugs of Rock-n-Roll. In being transparent on her platform people lift their horns with a hero. That's very empowering. You may never wail like these vocalists but there may be more important ways to identify with them in life, health and positivity.

I really appreciate hearing Lzzy's description of "singing therapy." I had no idea this was a concept! The tragedy I'm going through right now, specifically involving spousal MENTAL HEALTH issues, has left me hopeless and hollowed out. Strangely enough, I currently just have anxiety attacks when my emotional limits are reached rather than release through crying. For whatever reason I can't shed the emotional distress that way. It never used to be like this, and most times I can only sleep after absolute exhaustion takes over and the dang anxiety attack is still in full swing when I awaken. It is excruciating. However, it is ironically through my recent discovery and fascination with these videos that I have started singing along with some of my favorite songs again, and I realized the shower/car singing karaoke nerd that I have always been was lost along the way as well. The connection I've made here, getting to the point, is that once I'm singing, a flood of tears and sobbing begin!! The result is this transcendent relief from all of the pain, confusion and heartache that comes from violence and deep betrayal. Needless to say, I needed this, at this very moment in time, more than anyone could know. I don't mean to unpack some random crap here amongst the positive uplifting energy you both brought to the world through your amazing interview, but I heard this and it just spoke directly to my soul. And that's only 15 minutes in lol! I cannot wait to finish listening to the rest.
Elizabeth, you are a special gift to the world, as are all of the talented people you review and interview. I take great pride in my fellow Washingtonians who make a difference as well. Seattle 90's music scene represent! (Yeah, I was in a garage band at 14 that went nowhere and stayed home from school crying when Kurt died) Anyway...

Even though there is increasing awareness of depression and anxiety and their devastation effects, there is still a general stigma among many people that it's not a "real" thing and that as long as you are "consciously" aware of your actions/reactions to the world that you MUST have some kind of control over it, which is not necessarily true. I've suffered with mental illness most of my life and even when I reach out and try to connect to someone about this personal suffering (especially during a down cycle) a majority of people just dismiss me and don't want to be bothered with working through the hard issues. Depression get's "romanticized" in a way, I think, and people tend to think that they're just going to comfort you a little and that you'll magically be okay. But it's anything but that. Bad times are usually brutally ugly, nasty, and quite harsh. VERY few people are really willing to stand by you through that mess. So my heart goes out to anyone suffering.

This is my new favourite tea time, she went above and beyond to give thoughtful, intelligent, thoughtful, complete, pertinent and honest answers. I already live their music, her vocals and their skill but this just notched it up a little further.
You both picked eachother's brains and the mutual respect & admiration was a beautiful thing to watch and hear.

When they were talking about how the voice evolves and changes. I kept thinking I wish fans would remember this as singers age, they aren't going to always sound as they did on their earlier albums So many people bash singers for their voices, yes some of them absolutely deserve it for the smoking/drugs/drinking, but not all (a high percentage IMO) of them deserve this.
I'm glad they touched on this point. (I'm a fisherman not a singer lol, it just irritates me when people do this)

I love Lzzy's range. "Love Bites (So Do I)" Was the first Halestorm song I heard. Next was "Familiar Taste Of Poison." "Freak Like Me," "I Get Off" "You Call Me a Bitch Like It's a Bad Thing" The covers "Slave To The Grind, Bad Romance, All I Want To Do Is Make Love To You, Shoot To Thrill, Gold Dust Woman, Ride The Lightning" and more. When A Dear High school friend passed away from his own hand, The guys and I played "Here's To Us" at the funeral. Amazing vocal talent!! Rock On LZZY!!!!

    Great interview Lzzy.

I love Lzzy Hale. She's really talks with such candour, everytime. I have always admired her, since 10 years ago, great singer, and a real people's person, it's always a pleasure to listen to her talk. Elizabeth, you wouldn't know, but Halestorm was the last band to open for Heaven and Hell with Dio. She really looked up to him, you could also have asked her about that experience. But, anyway, an amazing interview. You are awesome. Thank you.

This is a really fun and insightful chat! Admittedly, I have only a casual interest in Halestorm, but Lzzy is definitely an impressive singer. It's great to learn more about her and especially her approach and technique. The part about breathing is really helpful; speaking of mental health, I've learned from my therapist about the benefit of diaphragmatic breathing.
