  • (Recorded live in Atlanta, GA on December 8, 2016) - I put together this video as a tribute to a true American singer-songwriter, Guy Clark.
In this video Jack Ingram reflects upon one of his first experiences of writing with him in the basement of his house. The story is followed by one of Guy Clark's greatest songs, "Stuff that Works" and includes a few outtakes of a couple of interviews he gave later on in his life.
All of which sheds a little light into the mind of a brilliant singer-songwriter.

I had the honour of meeting Guy twice. both times were a happy accident. First one (I think)ws at the Cambridge folk Festival (UK) It must have been a Sunday, because by the third/fourth day of no showers you go native, and I was strolling along wearing nothing by a pair of flip-flops and a dirty ol' pair of shorts. Suddenly this very large man and i came face to face in the crowd. I looked, gaped, and , probably told him his name - (I guess he already knew) "Yes I am, he said offering his hand to me - and I told him my name and that i was also a singer-songwriter but that I played a number of his songs too. He asked me which ones, and I told him the ones I could remember. He said, hey, you want me to sign something - albums or whatever? I said I have all your albums but none here. We said our goodbyes, shook hands (he has big hands) and parted. A gentleman.
Second time, (I may have been the first - I'm old and memories get cloudy), We went to see him play in West London with Eric Taylor, and ge was still using that big ol' Heiden jumbo.
My friend was a sometime freelance music journalist and had the knack of schmoozing to get backstage at gigs. I followed him.
Backstage was actually outside the back of the pub by the old beer barrels and crates.
Guy and Eric were busy rolling thier own cigarettes (I guess they didn't like British ones (!?) and chatted amicably to my friend Mike (RIP). I looked over and saw Guy's Heden, in an open case, and asked if I could look at it , 2hell yeah, play it if you want". I picked it up and picked a few - man that guitar was so badly n need of a set up! Guy read my mind and said so, nothing seemed to worry Guy that much though.
The next/last time i was to see him -we had front centre seats to see Guy and Vernon in London in August 2005.
Sadly it was the day after a heart operation, and there was no way I could travel.
i have every album he made and some he didn't .... and Ill miss the single Singer-songwriter that most influenced me.

I knew Townes pretty well ,late in his life. Guy and him were simply the best . Thanks for the tribute. Kinda choked me up ,but that's good . Felt their presence again ,even if just for a minute.

    Wow, that was genius.
"Writing songs is like trying to explain a dream. You gotta get it from here where it's beautiful and you see all the edges and all the colors and it's just this moment of clarity. You try to get it all through that filter and out onto a page into a melody. But you just lose the thread somewhere and start making shit up and that's where your songs turn to shit, but Guy Clark somehow had the ability to recreate those dreams in full color" -Jack Ingram

It's been well over a year since Guy Clark passed. I've never seen him in person, but I've listened to his work for many yeaknow I feel like I know him, but I'm sure in reality if I were to come face to face with him he'd say, "what the fuck do you want?" I'd stutter and hum haw around and mumble nuttin' and meander off. I'd still listen to his work whenever I could. I may not know him, but I at least think I might know how he felt about some things. That's good enough for me.

... or perhaps he might have said "Are you a musician? Hey , we're having a BBQ at my house tomorrow afternoon. Come on by and bring your instrument."
I kinda like to think he would be salt of the Earth and appreciative of his fans.

hahaha...he thinks he tells captivating stories like the good songwriters. unfortunately, his songs suck, and his stories are mildly interesting.

and you needed to do this because? If you can't appreciate his tribute, why not just be graceful and silent.
