Krav Maga, the martials arts that requires calling in air strikes to win a fight.

I took Krav Maga for a couple of years, believing most of the mystique I’d heard about it. And I found the majority of it was just boxing, Muay Thai, Judo, Karate, and BJJ blended up and mixed in with weapon disarms. So… pretty much just MMA.
I broke my wrist and haven’t been back for a while, but honestly? I’m just gonna go to a Muay Thai trainer instead. Seems a lot more applicable to real life situations.

I mean, that's basically what Krav is; a slurry of different striking, grappling and wrestling techniques blended together and then with the additional hypotheticals of "what if the guy has a knife or a gun and wants to kill you" thrown in. It's more about creating a mindset, as usual with martial arts.
I took it for a couple of years in highschool and then picked it up again after graduating college, and I'd say more than other techniques, Krav is very reliant on the previous experience of your teacher, since it pulls from so much. Mine was a dude who was brown belt in BJJ, so we also learned some ground fighting but how to get out from being on the ground.
Strip away the mythos and what you're left with in Krav is a reasonably effective self defense technique/combative. I'm glad I took it, personally.

    Cue my autistic breakdown:
I tried it at a prominent gym in Sydney in 2015. As a predominant grappler, I still had better striking than anybody else there.
I remember an Israeli expat I used to train with, persuading somebody against it, stating "Krav is designed to teach somebody who knows nothing about fighting/martial arts as much as possible in a very limited timeframe, before sending them into a war zone".
The reason Imi Lichtenfeld was a proficient fighter was because he grew up learning boxing and wrestling (the 2 most important disciplines for anybody to learn!).
Krav Maga is useful if you want to:
    1) push around little, old Palestinian women; or
    2) bully prepubescent Palestinian children
Source: my 20 years of martial arts (bjj, kickboxing, judo, boxing, wrestling, sambo, mma)

Someone I knew in high school ended up in an abusive relationship with someone who was always threatening to hurt them with their "martial arts expertise". That martial art? Krav maga, of course.

that's scummy as shit even if in some alternative world krav maga is an effect art , that's no different than schooling a first grader on college calculus.

I remember watching Frank Grillo's five-part documentary about martial arts in different countries and the last episode was about krav maga and Israel. I couldn't help but think of how, originally, this martial art had a noble goal in mind. I mean, Imi Lichtenfeld developed this fighting system in order to teach Jewish people how to protect themselves against the Nazis. And then, I see how the documentary sort of dresses up the fact that it's become a tool in the IDF arsenal against Palestinians as being the same thing.

idk, Krav Maga is pretty dumb BUT the stuff developed specifically for MMA doesn't take groin hits, eye gouging, soccer kicks, or biting into account so its probably not "perfect". Which like, idk how much that matters, but for all I know being willing to gouge someones eyes out would change how ground combat works.
Also obviously the existence of guns changes the whole calculus, though I doubt those krav maga "dodge the point blank headshot and twist the gun out of the guys hand" moves ever work.

Those things used to be legal in MMA and people used them a lot. Watch the first few UFC and Pride FC events and you will see dudes straight up punching each other in the balls. Those things aren't necessarily fight enders if you are fighting a tough and determined opponent.

@@ongobongo8333 I mean, I’m not an avid viewer but I’ve never heard of someone’s eyes getting pulped in the octagon. I gotta imagine you’d go to prison for that.

tbf, bjj has different names for moves that exist in jj, catch wrestling and judo, for instance mate leon(bjj) is just a rear naked choke(catch wrestling)... but i digress, all things being equal, the trained guy will have an advantage over the untrained, or 8 year olds in krav maga circles )

Mata-leão is just the popular word for a rear choke in Brazilian Portuguese, it's not really jargon.
