Switching To A Rheem Protera Performance Platinum Hybrid Electric Water Heater

- The cost of propane we used to heat water has doubled under Brandon and our old water heater was due for a replacement so I decided to change to a heat pump hybrid type. Hopefully it will save enough to help pay for itself over time. The first week looks like the savings will be amazing. Will keep everyone updated over time.

Earlier this year my hot water line broke under my slab. I ended up redoing all of my pluming with pex in the attic and absolutely love the stuff. So easy to work with and so far no issues. The only real learning curve was the manifold but it was not horrible.
I almost tried it after seeing the cost of the copper. Decided to keep everything the same in the end. Some day I will try it. Thanks for watching.
I have sold a lot of of Pex and sharkbite fittings and I can tell you 2 things I have learned: plumbing in general is a pain in the ass and it does not matter what prices and parts you are using are also a pain in the ass.
Ok 3 things: it does not matter what parts you use there is a price: the cheaper the price the more work installing and the less work installing the parts cost more.
I feel you about the loss of muscle mass. I have had COVID 3 times and it has absolutely destroyed my health in general. I'm 52 and going to draft a DNR. As a retired EMT when I am done I want to be done.
The second vaccine shot has destroyed my health. For some reason it resulted in an autoimmune problem that caused my muscles to deteriorate and bad brain fog. That SharkBite surprised me by how well it sealed and no problems with leaks. Hopefully they last 20 years like advertised. Thanks for watching .
Great video! I didnt know about these hybrid water heaters. Great job on the installation, thanks for covering this.
They seem to be the most efficient way to heat water these days. Not sure about lifespan or reliability so I extended the warranty to be safe. So far we love the savings and no problems. Rheem and several others have the full specs on their websites for comparing models. I will do an update with a little more info in the future. There also are utility company rebates and federal tax credits that help with the higher prices. Thanks for watching.
Great job on the installation!
Thanks. This has turned out being a great investment. Thanks for watching.
US has enough oil on our own land to support us for over 100 years. That allows US to set the price and be a major exporter. Also means that we can transition to greener energy gracefully.
We sure do and one corrupt idiot stopping it. Its all about who kicks back the most money. Yes we do need a thoughtful switch over and to invest in less toxic long term solutions. I was involved in bringing the first lithium jelly pack batteries to life for Motorola phones and know how toxic and dangerous that technology is. That was 30 years ago that companies started putting their eggs in the lithium basket and I don't see it as the answer. Thanks for watching. .
Why would we want to use dirty fuels when we can go to renewables, save money and create local jobs that can’t be outsourced?
Nice video. Thanks for posting it. I hope the new Rheem works out well for you and lasts a long time.
You and me both. So far looks like it will pay for itself in no time. Thanks for watching.
I never tried those shark bite fittings but it was great to see there were no leaks after hand jamming them together. Nice work.
Not one leak. I was a little worried about trying them but couldn't find a slip through sweat tee. Only issue was they don't carry the ground. Thanks for watching.
One added benefit of your water heater is that it should add some cooling to your basement in the summer as it draws heat ouf of your basement and puts it into your water. Of course it does the same in the winter too. You just can't seasonally change the laws of thermodynamics, dang it.
Ed, I sit here eating breakfast and watch your videos with great interest, yet I have done the same thing many times (one time I installed a gas water heater in a crawl space that water ran through while it was raining and wouldn't you know, it was pouring down rain and it was cold. The kicker is I had just had four wisdom teeth removed just four hours prior to that and drove the three hours from the army base where I was stationed to my in-law's house. And all that with no pain medication. ) But for some reason I don't think what I do would be of interest to anyone else. I've been wrong before. Stay well my friend.
Yes it does offer cooling and dehumidification of the basement. I can always add a duct to the input to have it pull air from the great room with the woodstove if it gets too cold in my shop. They sell an adapter for 8 inch duct so that will be easy. We run the furnace fan in the winter that helps keep the whole house even temps with the woodstove.
At our age we have been through many of the same experiences just to survive without going broke. Can't wait to watch your videos.
0:10 scared my cats half to death with my laughter
I was being good. I have zero respect left. Thanks for watching.
Great work and video young man
Thanks. It seems to be a worthwhile update sofar. Thanks for watching.
Great job, I had the same problem pushing those damn connectors on, thought I was going to have to get a come along strap at one point. I noticed that if the 3/4 copper pipes are not dead-on alignment they will not go. I imagine the plastic pex lines would be more forgiving. Thanks for sharing.
Tthose over center tees are not something I would use again. This water heater has been very efficient so far and definitely will pay for itself. Thanks for watching.
I got a smaller one (hybrid of electric and ground heat pump) but with a high output, then just buried a water tank in the ground, all isolated from end to end pipes included, about 2 meters deeper than my cellar, so about 8 meters deep in total. Super efficient, water on demand, and it's long term too. Next year i'm upgrading my solar (it's about 14 years old at this point) and that's gonna complete my ground heat pump + electric setup and cut me completely from the grid (cannot be bothered to deal with them anymore). I'm also planning on tapping for water and maybe, if i can find an affordable setup, some water treatment setup (beyond just my basic osmosis one). It's becoming more and apparent, both as climate's losing the grip on stability, but also as governments allow oil scumbags to do as they please, that we cannot rely on them. So, removing myself from the equation completely is the best option. Luckily, there's no bounds by which they can get me, being in EU, i hear some places you're not allowed to cut yourself off completely.
The thing that bothers me most is they are talking about banning wood stoves now and will send the fbi out to confiscate the existing ones. We should all be preparing to fight back if this corruption continues.
Lots of hacks that work better than the orange SB fitting tool!
They definitely don't make it easy for us old timers. Thanks for watching.
Just installed one in my garage. The noise is not bothersome at all...
Ours isn't bad and it never runs at night. We are seeing a giant savings. Thanks for watching.
I have had a GE Hybrid Water Heater for about 10 years now. It has made a large dent in my electric bill compared to the old school water heater but it has had its own issues.
Need a condensate pump to deal with the drain water and ours does not work well in the winter time. Unit is in an unconditioned garage.
So far it's doing great. My basement is a little cooler this year but the heatpump is still running efficiently. Costs less then 10% of the propane heater cost and no problem running out of hot water. They are a great way to save energy. Thanks for watching.
I think you'll be happy with that hot water tank, I know that I have been.
It seems to be a fairly reliable unit from the videos I have seen. I also bought the extended warranty just in case. So far so good but only a week in. Thanks for watching.
Homeowners really have lost it these days .
Bideninflation is killing us with energy costs skyrocketing. Thanks for watching.
I put one in a few years ago for my Dad….. he’s not a fan of it…. Also it’s not on his generator now either … never thought of that at the time….
I am surprised he doesn't like it. It's a big savings to our hot water costs. During power outages we have to run the generator for our pump anyway and the insulation on this tank should keep the water warm for many hours. Thanks for watching.
You probably should have used those flexible copper water heater connectors so you don't have to cut the copper pipe when the water heater inevitably needs to be replaced again.
It's not going to be the same by then. Those things always leak after a couple years. Thanks for watching.
Not sure if I missed a comment at the beginning - does it have to be transported upright? If so, that's a real PITA for this without a tractor to get off the bed of a pickup truck. Or, to carry down basement stairs.
Otherwise, nice looking installation. Hope you didn't hurt your hand trying to bang on the fittings.
Yes has to be transported upright according to Rheem. Probably like a fridge compressor with oil in it. So far the savings have been awesome. Thanks for watching.
Could you do an update saying if you save one and how much a yesr from now
I plan on doing that as long as it lasts. Thanks for watching.
I want one so bad but my current electric WH is in a closet inside my master closet. Scared the noise will be too loud outside the master closet.
You would have to cut big vents in the door. That is the worst location possible for one of these. Thanks for watching.
That shark bite de-burr tool is a joke.
Nice clean install.
I agree, so is that little orange thingy for releasing the grip. I was surprised that there were no leaks using it. Thanks for watching.
why didn't you install a heat loop as directed by the instructions manual?
My pipe goes straight up and is insulated so I didn't feel it was needed. The pipe is ice cold so no problem with the bottom feed. Thanks for watching.
i see some of them come with auto leak detector and shut off, is this necessary if you installing this in the garage? its like 300$ difference between units. Thanks
With the perrimiter drain in my basement I decided it couldn't damage much plus we shut off the water when we are away. It's a nice feature should there be a leak especially if no one is home all the time. It actually goes on sale every couple weeks to be about the same price. Your building codes may require it so that may be a good place to start. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 thank you, will check in the code in my area. To see what they require.
The codes change so much every year that its best to verify which one is required and if you need a licensed plumber to install it.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 I have a friend he is a plumber I guess I could ask him
It is Good to you see back Ed, I am in your camp and that is all I need to say about that. Perhaps November may bring change and not the change that I have in my pockets when it use to be Dollar bills in my pockets. I was not aware of the hybrid cold water heater. I replaced our natural gas water heater 7 years ago so perhaps it will last a little while longer. We have a recirculating pump on our hot water side and I like that and when we we do not need to recirculate the water I can turn it off via voice or an app on the phone. Our water consumption has decreased not having to waist water while purging the cold water waiting for the hot.
We turn on the recirculating plumb about 5 to10 prior to needing the hot water. 😁🛫
Propane is a by product of gasoline production so I see the price going even higher in the near future. As you know natural gas is set to see increases also due to exporting and shutting down fracking. If something doesn't change soon I see many not being able to afford to heat their houses up here. And now NY is talking of banning wood stoves. Never imagined one person could screw up the entire world so fast. Thanks for watching.
Do not use SharkBite fittings for anything other than potable water and radiant heating (e.g, air, gas, oil, etc.) applications.. SharkBite fittings are only certified for potable water & radiant heating installations.
Always follow manufacturers instructions when using anything. Thanks for watching.
What is the recovery on it?
Supposed to be 67 gallons/ hour the same as my old 40 gallon propane. That's running the elements and heat pump together. Most of the time it runs heat pump only but 2 showers and a load in the washer will cause the elements to turn on for faster recovery. how I have it set. In a hot climate you probably wouldn't use the elements. Thanks for watching.
In regards to the description, Brandon's got nothing to do with this (other than perhaps being utterly weak in front of oilcorpos, but who isn't, if there's a single country, real country, not dictatorships that can stand up to them, i want to see it).
It's OPEC and ruzzia combined with the fact that over decades upon decades of rampant capitalism, we've allowed (globally) that oil companies do as they damned please. Like it was back in the day when smoke corpos sued an entire country when they got called out on their bs. Combine that with the fact that EXXON pretty much screwed up, royally, on a level we won't even be able to comprehend until decades from now... i would've kicked their teeth in by now. They seem to live (their CEOs and owners) under the impression that they're kings of us, above us, and so on.
I've been all over the world on work over the years, and things are worse and worse. There's only so much blindness you can have until you see places and things that used to be true as a teenager just utterly vanished or change completely. It's time we stand up to these bullies and kick them in the nads. The last time i had an actual winter, with actual snow, that lasted more than 2 days of wet, miserable blizzard was in 2011.
Last year, i was in t-shirt and sandals where otherwise, in previous decades i would've been sewed up in seven layers. It's demoralizing, and not just because our kids don't even know the meaning of a white Christmas, but also because our cultures/crops can't cut it anymore.
My brother, who remained on the family farm, every couple of years he has to alter the crop seeds and methodology to keep up with the fact that it's getting warmer and warmer and drought hammers the land more and more. I helped him dig a new well two years ago, and where as before our original well was 11 meters deep, for a standing water of 4, now it's 15 deep, and this year when the drought was in full weight, he had less than 3 meters of standing water, so we're going to have to spend even more money, to make an even deeper one if things continue.
Shituation is FUBAR.
He sure does. His signature is the final word on all the executive orders. Thanks for watching.
It's pretty well established that every president benefits or suffers the effects of the policies enacted by the previous administration. But, hey! I didn't click on your video to argue politics. Nice work, bro.
@@GeeDeeBird It's definitely going to take the next president years to round up and deport all the illegals Brandon is allowing in. Pumping fossil fuel will be easy to restart.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 somebody has to do the jobs of the 1.1 million Americans who died of Covid the last year Trump was in office.
Why not go with PEX?
Because the house is 100% copper and using pex would look like a cheap patch job for resale. Thanks for watching.
I’ve never saw anybody put flux paste on a joint with their finger. The stuff is very toxic. It’s acid.
You also put way too much solder into the joint. Typical homeowner mistake. You just have to heat the bottom of a joint and touch the solder to the top of the joint. The idea is to not to have so much solder in the system to contaminate the water. if you overloaded every joint in the average house when you’re building it, you would be putting a couple of pounds of solder in the system.
Still no leaks. and that's all I really care about. Water heater is saving us about $60 a month so far so it was worth it. Thanks for watching.
You will save money on propane and give that savings to heating and air conditioning company for repairs…and they HATE heat pumps
I bought the 5 year extended warranty with replacement if it can't be fixed so no worries for 6 years. By then it will have paid for itself and saved enough for a replacement when needed. Thanks for watching
HVAC guy here, we won't touch those. Plumbers wont either. Equate it to a refrigerator- no one fixes them, just replace it.
“Brandon has caused…”. 😂
That's what we call him up here. Thanks for watching.
As a Brandon supporter, count me as a former subscriber.
I don't see how anyone that can think on their own can support him anymore. Thanks for watching.
