    Great presentation. You're a great speaker. What helped me for ease of removal is to have a bit of the mold overlap the ridge 1/3rd of the way from the top of my ear. It helps it have a good grip.

    I did almost the same thing. However I first inserted the ear buds into my ears (with the rubber ear canal adapters on) as if I was just using the ear buds. Remember to position the wiring to go around the top and back of your ear, not hanging beneath. I then packed the 2 part silicone around the ear buds and around my ear. With the ear canal adapters the silicon hardens around them giving a nice tight fit onto the ear buds so they won't fall off.

      Thanks for your recommendation, but how do you make the material reach the smallest ear hole? Wouldn't it be better to place the silicone and press the earphone up so that it penetrates the silicone, pushing it to the end?

    This only works if you have wide ear canals. If you have thin ear canals then you're going to struggle to align your drivers as you insert them into the mould, and it'll end up poking out the side or something stupid. I managed to bugger a pair of iems doing this. Be careful

    • @andreschamat
      @andreschamat Місяць тому

      Yes, the same happened to me, but I was able to fix applying a thin layer of putty to cover the mistake, the result wasnt perfect but I was able to save the molds and still be able to actually use them and enjoy them without issues. Also to protect the iems I put a tiny bit of tape where the sound comes out of.
      Definitely not as easy as it looks in the videos, but worth the hassle, at least for me. The sound improvement and comfort difference is amazing!

      So I'd also recommend if you're going to do this, cover the hole in your ear phone to avoid any of the mold getting in them as it did to my set of Shures. Managed to get it out of one, but the other is stuff deep and now it's fucked. Lesson learned. I'd also recommend making sure the mold is deep in your ear before putting the monitor in.

    Hi mate.
    I’m a motorcyclist and this custom mould is what I use when I ride.
    I’ve recently started using IEM’s and was thinking of merging these two together.
    I have a pair of KZ’s, but as a bassist I feel they lack in the lower end (unless I continually push them in during performance… which is annoying)
    Then it had me thinking, that maybe if it were sealed better, it may improve the lower register.
    How are your finding your IEM’s now with the custom mould ?

      So pro tip. Get a small piece or like foam thread some string through it Then put the mold on that and push that with your iem in your ear(mouth wide open) and wait like 15 mins to be sure. Also make sure to give in a good 30 second mixing Before putting the mound on the string. The string and foam will make take the mold out much easier and will also show you where to cut

    ....But is the sound quality the same as it would be with the plastic buds on them that they come with? The buds they come with are built to add sound quality. I can't see it doing that with your own custom ear molds .

    • @billdaggett7911
      @billdaggett7911 2 роки тому

      The bud tips that come with IEMs are designed to seal. They don't enhance the sound. If they seal, the IEMs sound good. No seal, not good. The tips do alter the sound and that can help if the IEMs don't have proper audio balance.

  • @zapz2101
    @zapz2101 6 років тому +3

    with the diy mold will the driver reach all the way in the ear canal where it should be? i noticed with my earbuds if i dont place them in properly all the way in the bass response it's not good. so thats what im concern about, not the seal but the driver fiting all the way in where its supposed to.

    • @billdaggett7911
      @billdaggett7911 2 роки тому

      It's the seal not the insertion depth. It just takes a certain depth to get the seal. It all depends on your ear canal, the headphone, and the tips used. With the custom mold, the IEM/earbud could be further away. As long as it seals and the diameter of the hole is tuned to match your IEMs, it'll sound fine.

      Dynamics are starting to have more presence in the high end. Honestly, dynamics and armatures are just preferences (and there's also electrostatics but there's only 1 electrostatic IEM in the world right now so let's ignore that for generality purposes).
      There are high end dynamics. Campfire Audio's high end IEM, Andromeda, is currently agreed by the audiophile community to be better than models such as the JH Roxanne and 13V2 Pro. And recently, the company introduced a new flagship which is surprisingly a dynamic driver, Vega.
      Though there are indeed more armatures at the high end, it doesn't mean dynamics can't be high end. Dynamics and hybrid drivers are gaining more and more popularity recently in the audio community as technological improvements has allowed Dynamics to shine (while armatures didn't improve much in the past 20 years).

      also, besides the earphone being offset, the thicknes of the mold was not regular as shown in the video, but was very thick on some parts and too thin on others.
      As I said, I believe the guy in the video made a lot of trials before getting the proper result.
      Unfortunately there's a reason if professional-custom fit IEM are so expensive: if you watch the Ultimate Sound IEM making of video you realize how much work and craftmanship are necessary to get a proper job done. If it was so easy to get a good job done with 18 bucks, professionals would die of hunger! ;)

    Great idea with the moulds, but you have said “you can pretty much use anything” as far as the driver is concerned?? I disagree!! There are two keys to a decent pair IEM’s # 1 is how they fit and #2 is how they sound. Gotta have decent drivers, at least 3 +. Bass, Mids and Hi. If you can afford more the better.

      You can use almost any in ear driver, but a better driver will sound better obviously.

      More drivers is better is not based on fact but is more of an audiophile myth designed to get people to spend more. Audiophiles are a weird bunch that believe they can hear the type of copper in a cable. They are dilusional. There are single driver IEMs that rival the best multi driver IEMs and there are Chinese multi driver IEMs that are pure junk. Most musicians want good bass, mid-bass, and mids that sit forward in the mix with rounded highs that are smooth, not strident. As you said, a good 3 driver IEM is good. I actually prefer the single driver Shure SE 215 for live monitoring as a guitarist/vocalist. They sound good, are inexpensive, and are bullet proof. My guitar amp and PA mains don't have 18 drivers and sound fine.

      that happens if the molds are not closing your ears enough or if the earphones are not pushed in at the right angle, or right place or deep enough, If you take care of that, bass will be excellent. I recently experemented with it a lot and it can be really good, or bad depending on that. For me it worked

      how did you ruin it exactly?

    • @JasonMorrisMusic
      @JasonMorrisMusic 4 роки тому +2

      @@matrixmodulator I either got a bad batch of ear-plug goop, or I didn't mix it properly. I stuck the goop in my ear, then stuck the driver into the goop. Waited the required time, but it never set up fully, so I ended up having a plug of the goop shoved into the in-ear monitor effectively blocking off all sound from that monitor. I think there is a little screen about half way down the shaft of the in-ear.. That screen was gooped up pretty good too.
      A couple days later I managed to stick a needle or toothpick in there and rip the screen out, and the goop with it, so it was not a total loss.
      If you are going to do this, be more careful than I was!

      @@JasonMorrisMusic you of course have to tape the grill and the vents ports to avoid the goop get into this holes (what did you do to restore the venting holes that will give you boomy sound if blocked

  • @ChironZore

    The problem with these, is they do not PENETRATE the ear canal; its just molding the outer ear. Real custom sleeves insert DEEP into the canal, injecting the music deep in the canal THAT'S why they sound better...

      feed it in slow and work it down.. I have custom moulds and these home mades..they look almost identical in size, shape and depth- seal is great on both (with the aid of a hair brush!) only difference is longevity my home made last about a year of hard gigging-but they only cost £10 my customs were £300 honestly loose nothing by having a go-a cheap way to try out custom moulds with existing drivers before taking the plunge.

    DO NOT DO THIS !!!!
    The molds will get stuck in your ears ! If you want a silicone ear mold to drill into. Go to an audiologist and get your molds done it’s only about $50 for an appointment and it won’t damage your ears and it’s done professionally
