- If you are new to sailing/cruising or plan to be soon, the most important lesson you can take from our experience is to buy the biggest and best anchor you can afford, and learn how to secure it WELL!
The squall in this video was over 60kts with a 180 degree wind reversal... not fun! When I chose my Mantus 105lb anchor from Mantus Marine it was because it had the best tested track record for resetting itself in extreme conditions due to the shape and distribution of weight at the tip of the anchor... todays situation affirmed in my mind that this was a good decision.
You will all have to make decisions that your boat and/or lives may depend on, so make sure and base them on the best and most recent information available.
You can find information on our anchor choice at:

Safe sailing everyone.
Cheers,
Captain Rick

I've been looking at a Mantis. I like how you can take them apart.
Yes, also a great feature for a secondary storm anchor that you can easily store and assemble when necessary! :)
True that Skip!!!
Just can cope that from shallow BalticSea here!
Second thing that can be learned . Close your hatches when you're not on the boat !! Lol
yes, thanks for the reminder, Lol
All I can say is WOW!!!
I would be going out of my mind being in a storm like that and being as vulnerable as you were. That could have gone so bad. By the way, based on my experience here in Minnesota, any time you see it get hazy like that on a hot day, you need to find someplace to take shelter. Those clues are always an indicator of a storm forming here. The heat and moisture are fuel for the storm. I'm surprised that you didn't know that, but then one of my interests has been weather and Earth science ever since we were hit by the largest tornado storm in 1965 that I've ever seen. I decided that I needed to learn as much as I can about the causes of these storms since that time. I saw things that you would never believe.
Glad SL and crew are OK. Great ad for Mantus and Pirate Lights. I'm sold. Never let your guard down.
You have not introduced the First Mate yet Rick. Get on it. Her demeanor and positive attitude during this situation make her, at least in my view, worthy of a permanent position aboard SL. Beauty, brains and an even keel with an eye for natural beauty. Great example for all the sailor girls out here. Looking forward to seeing more of her.
Hey Rick, good to see you and Tiki are safe. What a storm!
all came through unscathed luckily.. thanks! :)
Nice contradiction
Nice music
Nice people in your boat, Rick⛵
Ohh man. Poor Tiki riding out the storm on the cage. That was gnarly
Rick! You do such a great job on your videos. Your editing, your music, your drone work second to none I’m glad you survive the storm thank you this was a great one
Thanks Mate! :)
Nice Rick. One of the best vlogs I have seen...really shows how the natural world can be in such contrast in such a short period of time. Mantus should definitely send you something as a reward for providing the extreme testing of their anchor. Thanks for sharing.
Everyone always says how safe the Rio Dulce is from storms...I guess it pays to be prepared at all times. Glad you fared so well.
Wow!!! Glad everyone is safe and turned out ok...What a storm... Thanks for the video, Rick.... Amazing!
True reality video. Minute 10:18 comment is priceless! I've experienced a similar situation a local freshwater lake that included hail hitting the boat windshield. Glad you are safe Captian Rick! Rainwater will make the floors squeaky clean.
A day you'll never forget for sure! Love it when equipment does the job it was asked to do! Thumbed.
Well, what can I say ... beautiful nature, amazing blue heron. But, Rick! What relaxation does not close "the window"! it is one and two For any strange change in the weather you need to instantly return to the boat! What was the point of sitting in a bar and waiting for the storm! Stay safe!
well, I thought Amy had pulled the hatch closed on her way out to the dinghy, but that's my fault for assuming and not checking before we left.. and we could see there was some rain coming, that's no big deal, but nobody had any prediction or idea of the wind that would accompany it, so there was no way we could leave the bar until the wind subsided first, and then there was still the constant threat of lightning exposure on the dinghy ride back to the boat.. was a very impressive storm, but good news is it filled our water tanks! :)
I have a Rocna, but I am upgrading to a Mantis, Cant be too careful. I totally agree. Great Videos Capt. Rick
Glad everyone and everything are safe and sound.
Wow, crazy squall. The haze gave the videos a unique aura. Thanks.
Ahhhh I would of been so stressed wondering if I was dragging anchor.
Awesome nature shots at the beginning brother 🙌
my favourites.. and congrats on new Expeditions bro! :)
Dragging anchor its stress but if engine running. But if it does not work at that very moment then it is really scary!
I love how Tiki went off like a car alarm at the sight of a dinghy approaching after that microburst. Glad no one was hurt. Last time one of those hit us here 3 sailboats capsized and at least 2 people drowned. On land most injuries were due to tree limbs giving way or sunbrellas taking flight.
I noticed the storm brewing when You showed your Plotter when you entered that fresh water lake. I bet you knew this was coming and headed inland to the lake and anchored more out in the middle of the lake not too close to shore and the restaurant. This time of the year, it's always a good idea to keep a weather eye towards the wind.
And those lakes are what i have been told to be the very best hurricane holes anywhere!
but those microbursts are a bitch! Lol
Oh golly, my first thoughts was your yacht, your home my second thought was tiki, thank goodness both are well and you got through that powerful storm, reminded me of a storm in Mexico after just arriving after setting up our tents, a doozie of a storm like that came through, I was in the mess tent hanging onto the the timber pole for dear life! Know the feeling.!,
Yikes .....the first thing I thought of was Tiki. Thank goodness she toughed it out ...what a trooper. Thank God you're all safe. I have been out in the middle of Lake Ontario years ago under similar conditions in a 52' cruiser. I really was convinced I was about to meet my maker. Something you never forget. Other than losing a prop we all lived to tell about it ....scary 😵
It's not often that you see Capt Rick not in full control. Those storms not easy.
there is no force more difficult than a bolt of lightning to be rendered with on earth... except for a woman! :)
I gotta say, I saw more talent in the quality of the video presentation (visual, audio, and editing) than I recall recognizing in the last long time (since Brendens last visit). This was some really great footage, scary and worrisome, but also very cinematic, amazing closeups and aerials and music. For something you did real time - WOW!!!!!!
I belong in real time, it's where I am at my best, but it is impossible to keep up with editing an entire series with a team of one... especially when you factor in you have to keep traveling, sailing, fixing, and filming just to keep new content coming... I love it, but this is where a team would really help push SSL over the edge.
Captain Rick Moore - it was great stuff.
Captain Rick Moore you know my mantra, more real time clips are better than fewer non-current longer videos. Get me 8-10 minutes 2-3 times a week that are real time ( +/- 36 hours ) and you will keep them checking in and paying for their fix.
at the end of the day....all are safe and sound....good seamanship!!!
Hey Rick, So glad you have a super anchor! What a storm! Glad things turned out ok!
Forgot to mention how great the early nature shots are. Really wonderful stuff Capt. Rick!!
glad u three are all safe
R ick, I have been away for a week in Savannah , GA on vacation, I just got back and I am trying to re-adjust myself, that storm was something else, we get that kind of storm here in Florida once in awhile, Sudden, Bang its here with out warming, least you got thru it OK, Its nice to be back home once again, You take care Rick and stay safe, Thank you for that great Video.
Damn!!! I remember days like that traveling through Mexico!! Fast and furious. Yay Tiki!!! Glad you're safe. Thanks to the strong anchor!!! Easier to watch from sunny Florida!!!👍👍👍
Oh Rick Lord have mercy! So sudden and so strong! Not predicted anywhere on your data links? Whew! I was really worried about y’all in the dinghy with all the lightning, too!
Glad y’all- and of course, Tiki -are safe and have SL, will sail!
Love my 3 Mantus anchors! Amazing anchors!
Wicked squalls! Glad the hock held. Stay safe!
me too! :)
I still love your eye for the Camera Rick I really enjoy seeing nature and other ways of life. Thank you
We run the 105 on our boat as well. We bought it for situations just like that!! So glad to see everyone was ok. Way to keep that camera rolling!! That is so tough to do when life gets crazy!!
Siler lining...bad storm = Exciting video! Thanks Capt.
Silver, sorry, early here.
Hey Rick and Amy, glad to see you guys made it through the storm ok. We chatted for a bit the night before at Mini Mike's; left Cayo Quemado the following morning. SV Canel.
Wow! Glad Tiki and the Lady were alright. Quite the blow!
I was stressed out watching this! Glad you all are safe
So glad you guys and SLL made it through!
all good thanks! :)
So much for Happy Hour......
Glad you're all okay
Mantus. Don't leave port without it!
I think I might take 2 from now on! Lol
its amazing how in tune you are with the weather when your on a boat . and on the other end its weird to me when I go in land an see pep its like they could care less what the weather is doing
I'll say it again, "THAT WAS FUCKED UP!"
Life throws us a curve ball every so often. Great you, your crew mate, Tiki and The Lady came out unharmed!👍✌
Amazing how fast a day can change on you!
Hey Rick and Amy, glad to see you guys made it through the storm ok. We chatted for a bit the night before at Mini Mike's; left Cayo Quemado the following morning. SV Canel.
Holy shit! That was intense! The whole time you were recording in the bar, I was yelling what about The Lady! Lol. Been a long time since You Tube got me this fired up
Believe me, I was thinking same thing, but we were stuck until the brunt of the storm passed over.. would have been suicide to head off in the middle of it!
@@SailingSophisticatedLady Yes Sir. Much easier to fix a boat than a person.
Holy Crap!!!!!! How was the storm missed Rick??? Awesome that all ended well but Serously wtf. are you able to look back and give us more information on how this storm jumped you from behind....sort of speak😁😏.
Love watching and learning the do's and dont's . I dont know but I was thinking Rocna??? Now I thinking Mantus😍 ⚓
Thanks for the real time updates Love them!!!!!!
Fairwinds from the @captains.chair
Amazing video Rick! Glad all is well.
We were hit with one of those outside of Carters Cay Abaco Bahamas. We were about to drop anchor then got hit. It was a ride we will never forget!
Wow .. That anchor did its job.
Holy Crap Rick....that was crazy....almost looked like a downburst, but with the high heat and humidity you get violent mesocyclone activity. Glad everyone is ok...Again...Holy Crap!
Cheers,
Orlando Rick
O M G I'm glad Tiki and you guys are save. Yep living and learning, never ever play whit Mother's Nature. And next time don't forget close and checking everything. We love u Captain, and thank you for sharing to the Planet. Cheers.
yes, complacency kills when you haven't seen rain in weeks and forget to close the main hatch! Lol
Glad everything held up well in the circumstances & you're all safe & sound
Nice turnaround, less than 24 hours, you could set a dangerous precedent there 👍🤣🤣
Best ever video hope all is fine with the boat
Wow!!! 'Glad that turned out as well as it did...I was wondering about Tiki before you got back...'.sure points out the importance of a capable anchor
That was a wild weather event. Seemed like a microburst to me.
Whatever it was I'm glad all are safe and the damage seemed minimal considering.
Dang! Yep that's a real nice anchor...
Hopefully not too much damage from all the water and wind. Smart move on the Mantus! Thanks for breaking sequence for this.
WOW. you guys got.your.asses.KICKED!!!! Kudos to Mantis Anchors!
WOW! Glad to see all went well. You anchor like we do, use a big anchor and make sure it’s set. Glad to see Tiki made it thru the storm, even if down below got a fresh water wash down.
Oh , I was just about to go to bed and this came up so better watch it now.
It’s 1.30 am Melbourne Australia time.
oops, sorry to keep you up! Lol
Dude the new alarm worked great!!!
thanks for sharing!
Wow. That kind of excitement you don’t need. Did you lose any electronics with the open companionway? Glad you all are safe.
Hectic glad all is well.
I have a Mantus 45 lbs as a working anchor on an IP35 with Mantus 106 lbs as backup storm anchor. They are great anchors.
How frightening for you! How come Rick, you didn’t check the weather? You are always so great at that, particularly before you leave your boat/home. Thank God your gear was okay, apart from being soaking wet. Xx
wow that was some storm, good to see your guy's are OK …
Oh man- All I kept thinking about was did Tiki have any shelter?
RICK'S RIVER BOAT TOURS LOL Like that one
Looked like a kind of "supercell" pre-tornado to me!
I'm glad You're all well could have gone quite worse !
Glad You didn't try to get to SSL in that thunderstorm!👌
Are the other crews from Susiell-ralley also ok!?
Best thing, Tiki is okay!
YES! it was!....thank you!
That looked scary, TG Tiki was OK, probably pissed off, and The Lady Is ok, Don't worry Sophisticated Lady will get own back.
Wow Rick so glad Tiki (and the Lady) are ok. I spent two months at lake Atitlan (3rd largest lake) in 2006 with beloved late wife Janet. Strange coincidence, her birthday was May 10th. She was looking out for you!
Fucking wow. How about all the birds just chilling in the water that took off as you came back to SL? Like the winter trees in paradise, you seem to have a knack for filming things in a way that stands out to me, in a good way.
Great filming!
Happy ending=All safe.
Heat and haze and quick summer storm love them its a great wash and coolant lol.At last it looks like summer is coming lol.Eastern Europe its looks like winter is coming lol...
WOW...thats all that can be said
Good to see your new crew participating actively! Did I miss the episode where you intro'd her? Some awesome pictures, but no name or story! From Rio Dulce to ?? Hate it when a good squall gets in the way of a few beers with friends, but happens regularly! Go Leafs! (too late)
no, sorry... this was a realtime interruption of my regular series, which will resume with next video... still got some catching up to do, but getting there! :)
Good that SSL kept safe, how did the other boats fare in the storm?
wow! does that happen often? Good job documenting this.
John The Limo Driver from Kansas city
So Capt. Dont the weather data prediction info warn of such things? Windy?
That sure was FU! Good you are well set up with the right gear. And that no one hit you! But the hstches - oooops. Who would have known.
Has there been an intro of the new crew?
OMG nice place Rick but damm that storm hope your all safe Captain
One hell of a day!
WTF 😱 I'm assuming there wasn't anything on the radar showing the approaching weather? I gather from your comment that you too thought that too. And that's how do you go from hot, hazy and calm to 60 knots in 12 minutes. No thank you. Glad everyone and SSL are okay! 🥂
Very cool and .glad everyone is AOK>..and especially TIKI! Was that your boat alarm I heard go off as you were approaching? PEACE OUT! Ü
Wow Mother nature at her best !! Stay safe
never underestimate the power of the wind! :)
One to remember!
Surprised you'd leave your boat unlocked and open. Glad it was just wet.
Hurricane? More like click bait! Here in Florida we get heavy rain and wind like you filmed frequently. Really no big deal, although our house and car is not held in place by a chain and anchor. Glad it turned out well for ya'll.
Hey Rick nice video and glad yall made it through that squall ok. One person you haven't talked about in a while in the videos is your son Brenden. How has he been and is he still helping you out with your videos? Hope you have a great day
He's still in Canada doing his thing, but maybe we'll see him down here again yet! :)
Here in Florida we call these type of storms micro down burst I'm not a meteorologist nor do i play one on UA-cam but somehow the air is pushed up from the storm front and is accelerated back down glad you and tiki are safe
Thx for the souvenir Rick... i think i was at that bar( or not too far) back in 2000 waiting for a " lancha" to go to Livingston then to Utila island Honduras ( by sailboat) for diving lessons. Good that Sophisticated Lady was well anchored... take care.
Sundog cafe
Glad to see everyone come out ok, the floor may be easy to clean but i bet tiki's cage will need a pressure wash.
Glad you filmed that get to see how things can brew up, the time line was interesting, and all is well on the good ship Sophisticated Lady, kinda screwed up happy hour
Thank God all is ok,And it is a good thing Tiki is a tropical bird "Tough"
yes, she didn't seem frazzled at all! Lol
Maybe daily barometer reading could help going forward
wow unbelievably fast change thank goodness for your anchor. no harm done . Tiki fine. it must have been concerning all round. glad to see your all ok. "SHIT"
