Few words from the creator:
Growing up in Kathmandu during the 90s - there was a heavy Western musical influence in the scene. And 'Hotel California' by The Eagles had always been a big hit, and a jam song among friends.
A friend from Darjeeling, India (back in the year 2001-2003) played Hotel California and quoted 'Darjeeling' as he sang the chorus of the song- (he sang something as 'Welcome to Darjeeling' instead of 'Welcome to Hotel California' along the chorus). An idea came along, and I wanted to write about Nepal and Nepali people. It was in my mind that I wanted to use instruments like Saarangi, Baasuri, and Maadal for the Nepali version as they emblematize Nepali folk music.
I ended up penning the first verses of the Nepali version around 2003-2004, and, completed the second part around 2011.
My vacation to Nepal (Summer 2014)- I was lucky enough to meet right group of musicians and make this happen. The audio was recorded at Magnetic Orange Studio and we filmed the video with the help of guys at Jazz Productions. We traveled from to and fro, Kathmandu to Hetauda and stopped at Chitwan, Narayanghat, Malekhu and captured some scenes. We'd planned for two days of shooting; the first day was great but the weather was not kind to us the second shoot day. The rainy weather on the second day made it tough for us to capture the scenes with dark sky and low lights. Nonetheless, we managed to capture the frames. The rest of the scenes are from Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Kathmandu Durbar Square, and Patan Durbar Square.
Kudos to the cameramen/editor for the job they have done with the video editing. And also many thanks to musicians involved in the project. Special shout out to my cousin Sagar Dhakal who helped me through each step in the process.
