A big thanks for this! My family used to have a static caravan when I was a child down in Porthcawls' Sandy Bay, back when it was a black and white TV powered by a car battery under the dining room chair and a single gas fireplace to warm the van, with no running water! I decided it was time to give my kids the fun experiencing of caravaning but decided a tourer was the way to go, your videos, especially this one have been super helpful to get me clued up with the knowledge I needed. Bought our Caravan yesterday and our first trip is Friday :D

Hello Dave and Helen, we are off in are new caravan, well new to us, very soon for the first time, been watching your videos and other UA-camrs videos to gain has much knowledge has possible, thanks for putting your videos out there, working has a steel fabricator we use propane cutting gear, and the reason why the propane bottle is fitted with a left hand thread is so that no other fittings can be put on by mistake ie oxygen gauge .

Hi Buster, hope you're well and bet you are looking forward to those trips in your new caravan. Thanks for this, good to know, I thought it would be some kind of health & safety reason behind the reverse thread. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Dave & Helen.

When we were touring I always put some plumbers tape around the pigtail thread for extra safety. ( Any little leaks) Great advice for any Newby though! 35 years at it and 15 tourers past it now😀 but enjoyed every minute of those days!

Hi Both! A few weeks ago while we were away in Norfolk, we bagged a safefill 7.5 KG bottle, which wasn't cheap, but worth it for the reduced nose weight, plus it was only £8 odd to fill at Morrisons. We also have a small gas light patio as a standby. We don't use the 6KG steel bottles anymore as they are over £30 at the moment to swap over, plus they are so heavy.
If we can get a few more years out of the safefill (as LPG pumps are disappearing), then I hope it'll pay for itself, as we want to do some winter caravanning in the future.
    Cheers!

That’s interesting John and I’ve heard very similar stories to this. The refill price is very good indeed but it seems it’s getting harder to find garages where you can refill. Given our very low dependant on gas, I think my decision is an easy one to stay put but will watch with interest to see how things go. As always, thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Cheers Dave & Helen 👍

Good info there Dave, especially regarding longevity of the hose working life. As you demonstrated, it can get confusing with gas bottle fittings. It is a UK industry standard for Propane bottles to be Left Hand Thread, I believe because it is a flammable gas. However, Butane, Patio Gas and others require a variety of fittings, different yet again if you need to get a cylinder on the Continent.
Also worth remembering that the boiling point of Butane means it will not work well at low temperatures, that is why we have always stuck with Propane as we, like yourselves, very much enjoy winter vanning.

It's very true, the gas always runs out when you are using it, it never runs out when you are not using it😂😂. Great video👍

I know it is true but in my case, always when I’m cooking a meal. Not when I’m boiling the kettle or using it to heat the van, always, always when I’m cooking 🧑‍🍳 😂

We're brand new to caravanning but as with my welding gas I'd probably purge a bit of gas out before fitting the pigtail, just in case there's any dust or dirt at the bottle valve.

Well put together Dave 👍. Very good advice for newbie’s and seasoned caravaners alike. I’m still using 6kg Calorlite whilst still available. By the way do you miss cruising along the Broads? Cheres, Rob & Gail

Hi Rob, thanks for watching. The Norfolk broads are wonderful, worth a holiday on a boat if you e never done it. I really enjoy boating/sailing but got a bit bored cruising the same stretch of water. It’s a lot easier and cheaper in a caravan and much more choice. ATB Dave & Helen 👍
